yes. The catch was before they hit out of bounds.

Re: Heckuva catch in Bear River making national news
Really? I mean does it even matter? I see pros jumping and reaching back over the fence to catch a ball all the time, I think as long as you catch it in bounds you are ok, but it looks to me like she's out of bounds when she catches it, but then again I don't know much about Bases Ball sooo...

Re: Heckuva catch in Bear River making national news
So the catch was before she hit out of bounds. So the catch is an out. Had she jumped the fence, landed on the ground then caught it, it would not be an out. but her last touch was in the field of play.
Now, if the out would have been out 1 or 2 in the inning, with her going out of bounds, the runners on base (if any) would have been able to advance. Similar to a ball being thrown into the stands during a play.
So have argued it should not be a catch because her hand may have hit before the catch, but it is close and I have not gone that far.

Re: Heckuva catch in Bear River making national news
Nice explanation. In watching the replay it looks like she did catch it before any part of her body (including her hand) touched out of bounds. That being said she did benefit from a flimsy fence! Had that been a rigid fence there’s no way she makes that catch. Hats of to her though for the immense concentration. That is not an easy play. Sign her up Coach!Aggiefan33 wrote:So the catch was before she hit out of bounds. So the catch is an out. It was an incredible catch. Tremendous concentration and athleticism to run it down and hold on to the ball the while tripping over the fence and falling backward.
I agree, I don't think she holds onto the ball if it is a more permanent fence. The typical high school girls softball fence distance is about 220 feet from home plate to any fence. It looks like Bear River's fence is about that (215 feet, per Google Earth). If the fence was five feet further back - closer to an average regulation field, she would have caught it no problem (wink).
For comparison - the average little league field (for 10 - 12 year olds) has a homerun fence of about 200 - 225 feet down the lines and 225 - 275 feet in center field.

Quick correction- this wasn't at Bear River. It was in the state championship game against Tooele in Spanish Fork.
Having said that, it was very strange to see my alma mater on the espn.com frontpage and making the SC Top 10. They really love their softball at BRHS, so it's been fun to see.

I’m guessing that girl is getting some calls right about now for free school, if she doesn’t already have one lined up.

Softball players typically commit before the end of their sophomore year, so it is likely if she's going anywhere, she's already made that decision a while ago.Imakeitrain wrote: ↑May 24th, 2021, 7:33 pmI’m guessing that girl is getting some calls right about now for free school, if she doesn’t already have one lined up.
