Sad news from the Islands
Their play by play announcer Robert Kekaula died. He was only 56 years old.

I remember watching some streamed basketball games to KJZZ in the WAC when USU had some dominant teams in conference late at night. Listening to his sayings such as, "The Aggies are putting on a clinic here in Honolulu."
I don't think I will ever forget the 2012 comeback when the team was down 28-7, and won 35-31. His calls throughout the game made it that much more enjoyable.
RIP Robert, gone too soon.

Horrible news. I loved listening to him call games. He had such a calm demeanor and pleasant voice. Way too young. Definitely my favorite announcer to listen to. RIP, Robert.

He was a very talented individual, besides covering UH Football, he was covered political races, local stories of interest, and even recorded Polynesian music.
Here is his Facebook page showing some of the stories he covered.

I had a chance to visit 4 of the 7 Hawaiian Islands about 4 years ago. It truly is a place unlike any other on earth, and I thought about the voice streamed to my home as I went through the place.

Very sad to hear. Definitely listened to my share of games with him announcing. Wish his family well. 56 is too young to go.

Very sad news. I loved listening to that guy - he was a delightful mash-up of Keith Jackson and Grover from Sesame Street. Knew his football, called games joyfully, and was Hawaii through and through. Heaven help whoever steps Into those shoes. RIP Robert.

I think the originator of Ben Dole was the cajun guy at La Tech. He was a close second to my favorite visiting team broadcaster.

I still watch that Hawaii game often. His voice was the narrator of Aggie Football rising from the ashes.

He was also the man who said from the armpit of America when referring to Fresno I believe. Whether or not that is true what a loss.
He will be missed.

Re: Sad news from the Islands
So sad. Truly my favorite sports announcer of all time (and I never knew that I even had one of those).
There's not another soul in the world who has ever said it quite like this (to paraphrase): "Aaaand the Aggies have opened the trap door on Hawaii!"
So much for my dream of hearing a game called by Robert Kekaula and Gus Johnson. RIP, my MW and WAC brother.
