I thought that Fresno State was a Tier II school...

I have no clue how they calculate these rankings. Working in academia I have my own view of how the schools are really ranked but admittedly my view is skewed by the business schools (but not entirely).
1a. Colorado state
1b. UNLV
3a. Hawaii
3b. New Mexico
3c. Utah State (I may be biased here but I don't think so)
6a. Nevada
6b.wyoming
6c. Sdsu
9. Fresno
10. Sjsu
11 Boise

Airforce is hard to rank, but would be towards the top.

These rankings typically weight acceptance rate and rate of students that graduate in 5 (or maybe 6) years fairly heavily. Utah State usually gets dinged on both these for being a land-grant and because of kids going on LDS missions. Other MWC schools are land-grant but the others don't have people taking longer due to missions.

Very interesting. I don't keep close tabs on this, but I'm surprised USU is so low. I've always seen CSU and Wyo, especially, as very close peers. But they rank WAY higher than USU. USN&WR is pretty transparent about the methodology behind their madness (https://www.usnews.com/education/best-c ... nd-weights). It looks like these are the primary indicators and the relative weight they carry when calculating rankings:

RANKING FACTOR............................INDICATOR WEIGHT
GRADUATION AND RETENTION RATES................22%
SOCIAL MOBILITY.........................................5%
GRADUATION RATE PERFORMANCE....................8%
UNDERGRADUATE ACADEMIC REPUTATION...........20%
FACULTY RESOURCES....................................20%
STUDENT SELECTIVITY ..................................7%
FINANCIAL RESOURCES PER STUDENT................10%
AVERAGE ALUMNI GIVING RATE.........................3%
GRADUATE INDEBTEDNESS...............................5%
TOTAL....................................................100%

I see USU scoring poorly (relatively speaking) on graduation/retention rates (missionaries and marriages/families), graduation rate performance (same reasons), academic reputation (rated by peer institutions), student selectivity, and alumni giving rate. Not sure we're going to do much to change many of these, either. I wonder if we got a full-blown veterinary program if that would move the needle or not? Anything else we can do to improve our lot?

I'm also in higher ed. my view is skewed towards the science/engineering world (but not entirely). this would be my stab at it:
1. CSU
2. Wyoming
3a. USU
3b. Air Force??
4a. Hawaii
4b. SDSU
5. Nevada
6. New Mexico
7. Fresno
8. UNLV
9. SJSU
.....
.....
.....
.....
.....
100. Boise

I also had a hard time slotting Air Force because they are so different.

($ millions)
Wyoming - $585.9
New Mexico - $442.4
Utah St - $427.4
Colorado St - $393.1
Nevada - $367.4
SDSU - $330.2
UNLV - $305.7
Fresno St - $170.7
SJSU - $148.7
Boise St - $113.8
Air Force - $98.9

Air Force’s job placement rating is impressive.
