USU officially Tier RI Carnegie School

Joins with nine others to become one of the 137 nationwide.

The school has made a lot of progress with both athletic achievement and academics over the past 15 years. The two are certainly related to one another and invitations to the WAC and MW certainly have helped in both regards.

This is a pretty big deal for the University.

Now we need to get our own vet school and drop the partnership with WSU.

You have to think that is high on Cocketts agenda being an animal scientist. It would leave a nice legacy for her.

Interestingly/importantly, this move was based on 2019 and 2020 data, and NOT (as some might think) because of SDL's (very) recent massive $1B contract award. SDL's more "standard" contracts no doubt are a huge part of this, but steady progress has been made across the board and this is about more than one award.

Good work, USU! I hope it pays dividends for the athletics programs, but in all honesty this transcends athletics and I hope it ends up being a good and stabilizing factor for USU, Cache Valley, and the state of Utah in general. GO AGGIES!!!

That is for sure. As much fun as sports are, they rank really low on the things that are really important to me in life. I have a son at USU now, and I am glad that this will improve the stature of the school he attends.

KSL put an addendum on this today. Impressive growth in research money.

During the 2021 fiscal year, USU researchers enjoyed awards totaling $368.5 million. This growth represents a 26% increase from the 2020 fiscal year.

"That's related to the growth of research on our main campus at Logan, also through our statewide campus systems and through the Space Dynamics Lab, which is affiliated with Utah State University," Berreau said.

USU's total funding includes $124.5 million generated by researchers on campus, as well as $244 million in contracts and grants from USU's Space Dynamics Laboratory.

"That combination of growth, plus growth in our graduate programs are what resulted in us moving to the R1 classification," Berreau said, adding that the classification gives USU "momentum on which to build and continue to try to leverage our research strengths to address current problems."
For reference, here are the other 136 schools. Outside of the Ivy League, it is most schools from large conferences.

Finally with the big boys like FIU, UC Riverside, and UW-Milwaukee!

Very surprised by many on that map.

The UC System is very prestigious, and that one does not surprise me. UC Riverside has a medical school as well in a very urban population.

This is not solely correlated to sports keep mind but larger athletic exposure usually means larger donations to the school. However, research grants, contracts, endowments pale in comparison.

The largest athletic budget is the University of Texas. It is listed at $187 million, a fair chunk of change. However, the largest endowment is Harvard's which is $40 billion. That means their athletic budget is 0.4% of Harvard's Endowment. Even the UT of State System's endowment is $30 billion.

The vast majority of gifts, grants, and spending at a University are not related to sports.
