He would most likely have taken the world record under 2 hours. It will still happen some day, but probably farther away now.

It feels like the equivalent of if Roger Bannister had died when he'd been close to but not quite under the 4 minute mile mark

Maybe, although there were a lot more guys close to 4 than there are close to 2.

Then that just makes this an even bigger deal in terms of running milestones left unreached longer

utah had a high school kid go under 4 for the first time, i think last week.

Yeah, HS kids go under 4 these days and Utah is very good at distance running so I'm not surprised, but sub 4 was a big deal the 1st time it happened, and a sub 2 hour marathon will be as well. I think it will still happen, we'll just have to wait longer it.

JoJo Jourdan of Olympus ran 3:59.87 in Boston at the New Balance meet. He was the first Utahn ever and 6th high schooler to do it indoors.

Depending on what races they get in at sea level, Danny Simmons of American Fork and a handful of other Utah kids may have a chance this spring.

Jane Hedengren of Timpview will have a chance to be the first Utah girl under 4:30 for the mile this spring.
