New Aggie beat writer for the Trib
Hi all,
The word on the street is that with Brian T. Smith leaving the Trib (thank goodness, didn't care for his coverage) and Bill Oram moving to the Jazz beat, that Lya Wodraska has also asked for more time to spend on Utah Gymnastics, so Tony Jones is going to move over to cover the Utes and Lya is going to cover USU football the rest of the season.
Tough loss for USU coverage, if accurate, as Tony was A+

Re: New Aggie beat writer for the Trib
I really hope that this isn't true. Tony has been the best that we've had in a really long time.
Re: New Aggie beat writer for the Trib
This is a bad deal if true. Tony has done a great job for us. We'll be an after thought to Utah gymnastics for Lya. I think she's terrible anyway. If I had a bird I'd line its cage with her articles.

Re: New Aggie beat writer for the Trib
I've heard that the Ute fans were very unimpressed with Lya. I'll reserve judgement, but I'm not a fan of this change in any way. I hope it is a positive for Tony, but it appears that it will kind of bite for the rest of us.

Re: New Aggie beat writer for the Trib
Agreed. I sent an angry e-mail off to the DNews when they let Eborn go. The best Aggie coverage we ever had was when Tony and Jared were competing to break stories first. Tony has continued to do a fantastic job since then. Losing him would be a pretty big blow to our coverage in the SL Media.GameFAQSAggie wrote:Along with Jared Eborn.ProvoAggie wrote:I really hope that this isn't true. Did I read that properly? Wouldn't that make Lya's second priority USU football behind Utah gymnastics?

This is freaking crazy! Tony has been awesome, but the move makes sense. What scares me is that he's been awfully quiet on facebook today.
IMO

It seems that way, or perhaps they would be equally important. Either way, it would be a tremendous step down in coverage.AndroidAggie wrote:Did I read that properly? Wouldn't that make Lya's second priority USU football behind Utah gymnastics?

Re: New Aggie beat writer for the Trib
Is it just me or does it appear Lya hasn't tweeted anything for 3 days? Not that Twitter is what makes a good reporter, but these days it helps with any breaking news and to at least keep us believing that the media is paying attention to us.

If you want to keep Tony then let the twin know. He's still tweeting USU stuff so he's still doing USU.

I asked Tony via Twitter, here is what he said:
"We are currently in a massive restructure at the Trib...I will make any details known as they become available to me"

I'd vote for ProfessorChaos. Already networked and experienced with lots of followers already. Much better than anyone else out there for a gig like this.

Re: New Aggie beat writer for the Trib
I'm guessing the Fib isn't interested in hiring, just consolidating. That's why we're being combined with Utah gymnastics for coverage. It's sad, last year my Ute friend told me he was jealous that Tony Jones was our beat writer and he hated Lya....

Re: New Aggie beat writer for the Trib
I think newspapers need to start re-thinking their concepts for content. Instead of having a full-time beat writer they should pay Fafner to write their blog and a certain number of articles. They could give him a budget for travel expenses and give him credentials. They'd save a lot of money over trying to carry a full-time writer. Really, they could do this for almost all their content. They'd just need editors to manage the contributors and the content. It would also be more interesting to read IMO. You'd get a lot more variety in style and stuff. And a few photogs to get the some art lined up with the content when needed.hipsterdoofus21 wrote:I'm guessing the Fib isn't interested in hiring, just consolidating. Faf would be great! Albeit just a 'little' biased in his reporting.
But as long as twitter exists all is well in the news world.

Can we chalk this up as a win on MidnightTrain's record?

Oh sure, go ahead and take credit for MidnightTrain's success.rAggie wrote:Can we chalk this up as a win on MidnightTrain's record?
The real MidnightTrain would have broken this news 2 weeks ago and would have done so in much more cryptic methods.

Is he a zoob? He's re-tweeting stuff by Jay Drew about BYU, not a good sign IMO.tkmad wrote:might be hard for me to get behind a guy named Goon. Hoping I can get past it.
