NAR - Holy War

Post by Psych » September 6th, 2016, 3:25 pm

I apologize for posting this as it's not Aggie football but the Holy War is too fun a rivalry to not have a thread about it.

I'm curious what you all think of the Utah/BYU game this Saturday? What are your predictions or keys to the game for either side?

Mods- can you please move this to the "general sports" section?

I see no need to move this to the general sports section. Utah State football is definitely affected by the doings of the other in state schools.

As for the game, I expect it to be a close one. I have no faith in Utah's offense, but their Defense is about as solid as they get. BYU is pretty balanced on both sides of the ball, but they don't shine on either side.

Should be fun to watch. I work with more BYU fans than Utah fans, so Go Utes!

I think it will be a pretty close game. I agree with what Ace said. I expect it to be a low scoring game, and really a toss up on who comes out with the W. If I had to choose one, I would say BYU wins this one 22-18.

When it comes to college sports I follow these general rules every time:
1--Cheer for the Aggies
2--Cheer for the conference
3--Cheer for whoever is playing BYU
4--Cheer for whoever is playing Utah (rule 3>4)
5--Cheer for any G5 team playing a P5 (rule 3>5)

Yes Utah fans are irritating but I hate BYU.

As for the game, I think Utah wins 27-21. BYU barely beat a poor Arizona team with an awful defense. I think Utah's D will force some key turnovers to help their offense. Being in SLC gives them the edge.

Hipster...you and I are on the exact same page as that is my exact logic in who I want to see win any given game. I'd add P5 bottom feeder vs P5 blue bloods I will cheer for the bottom feeder every time. I also dislike Tennessee a lot so I would cheer for Utah over Tennessee but not BYU over the Vols.

The (UN)holy war... aka the Duel in the Deseret... or the Desert... or the Deserted? Or what ever KSL/DNews want to call it for marking and sales purposes... here is what I think of it: zzzzzzZZZZZZZZzzzzzZZZZZzzz

Two over-hyped teams that will likely slug it out with a low scoring snooze fest of a game. As usual the utes will likely pull off the W like they always seem to... My prediction anyway and for what it's worth... :noidea:

My dream scenario:
BYU will start a bench clearing brawl and Dr. Hill out of arrogance makes Utah leave the field because they are better just because of their association with the pac 12. Both teams loose via forfeit.

I think it's a low scoring defensive battle. Neither team seems to have a great offense so far this year. Taysom Hill didn't look as multi -dimensional as he used to. I think link Chuckie he is trying to stick to mostly passing where his running ability is really what made him what he was.

NAR - Holy War

Post by WAaggieFan » September 6th, 2016, 5:02 pm

1. USU
2. Conference not Boise or Azztouches
3. Anyone over P5
4. Anyone over SEC
5. Anyone over Utah
6. Anyone but Utah over BYU

But in all honesty it's hard to say I 'cheer' for anyone in a game I won't watch.

Games I won't watch:
1. Utah vs anyone not USU
2. BYU vs anyone not USU
3. SDSU vs anyone not USU
4. Boise vs anyone not USU unless it's against a snobby P5.
5. Any P5 only game unless it's a bottom feeder upsetting a snob.

In summation, I won't be watching the OP game and don't really care about. However, if forced to watch and, therefore, pick a side then I'd choose BYU even though I feel disgusting saying as much. I think SDSU is the only other team I'd like to see lose to BYU.

It's like the old death is not an option game where you have to pick one and in this case the only options are which rapist to set free.

+1. My thoughts exactly. In my experience with Ute and BYU fans, their blind arrogance fluctuates. I can't stand the arrogance. Yes there are good, reasonable fans. I'm speaking of the arrogant ones. Right now it's the Utes of course.

At least BYU will come to Logan, whereas Utah refuses. Hopefully the blind hatred Aggie fans can have for BYU can look past this simple fact. I hope doing a H and H with Wazzu sends a nice, candid message to that school on the hill. I hate them equally. To be totally honest, I'm completely apathetic towards both teams. I just like watching to see some drama  and I'm also just a sports fan in general.... So yeah.

Anyone who thinks BYU wouldn't stop coming to Logan if they get into the B12 is at risk of sending money online to save a foreign prince.

BYU has refused to come to Logan in the past, in fact we are currently in a 2-1 that got bumped to home and homes purely because BYU is so desperate for home games they gave us a "free" one to move games off of conference weekend. BYU sucks and should never be trusted. Call it hatred or whatever but I can't stand them.

When vastly outnumbered (i.e. in Logan), Ute fans and BYU fans are tolerable. I think I would have to repeatedly bash my head against the wall if I lived in the Provo area though.

I think Utah will win 17-14.

We can hope for a repeat of the game that Utah won 3-0 a few years ago. Worst football game I have ever seen.

I never really care about the result of this game, but I am usually at least somewhat interested in the banter and excitement across the state. This year feels different though. I may watch it if I don't find another game to watch at that time, but beyond not caring I'm not even really interested. I work/live in Utah County, and aside from a couple of cars with yBu and U flags that I've seen in town, it seems like there isn't all that much chatter down here. Then again, surprisingly I don't work with THAT many yBu fans.

That's part of why I started this thread. I live and work in UT county and it seems very different this year. I was also laughing the other day as I chimed in saying the U will probably win and a yBu co-worker kept saying "you don't get to comment, you went to USU!" Gotta love some of their attempts at slighting us.

Funny what losing to Utah 5 straight games has done to the cocky cougars. The humble pie has been served up 5 times and they have their cougar tales snipped a little.

One win and they will Rise and Shout how they are P5.

Sans the same conference arrangement, this game takes on a dimension of an established yet diminishing rivalry, just not for all the berries on the bush as it used to be. Going back enough decades, the AGGIE, Utes game was the marquee game in this state. Times change and so do rivalries. Reality folks, nothing to see here.....move along now.

I can still enter a stadium, sit by or near and leave with a Utah fan and be quite friendly. Not so with most Cougar fans who are a blight to their institution and an embarrassment to their religion. Missionary "TOOL"..

I came looking for a stimulating intellectual conversation on the crusades. All I found was this boring and inane drivel about what I believe might be a board game competition between two community college clubs. I'm not sure still. Well, time for me to move on.

I didn't even realize that was this week until I saw this thread about it.

It's amazing how little anyone cares about this game outside of Utah, especially now that is has zero implications on conference outcome.

I haven't watched a BYU/Utah game since the early 90's and see no reason to start tomorrow. I'd rather find a MW team to watch and cheer for. Wyoming/Nebraska or Nevada/Notre Dame. I'd even choose to watch Cal Pamona State Polytechnic Institute vs. Colorado School of the Mimes over BYU/Utah
