I picked up an OLD, pre 1957 Utah State Agricultural College pennant on EBay. It has the old college seal, with the sheaf of wheat in the center and the motto "Labor is Life" (I kinda like that). It is BADLY faded. I'm going to have it framed, and put under museum quality UV protective glass to minimize any further damage. My question is, should I try to dye it back to navy blue? I don't think the fabric paint would pick up the dye. My default is to keep it as is.

I'm no expert, but I would assume that dying it would be pretty bad.

I probably wouldn't dye it. It might work but you also have a pretty good chance of causing further damage which probably wouldn't be worth it.

You should only give consideration to this if you can find a professional restorer to do this. Otherwise, let it show its true age in all its glory.

The fade is the patina in old fabrics like the [likely] felt. Dying it would be like stripping an 1820 Shaker rocking chair and staining it pink. You'd lose a great deal of value of your investment.

I have one just like that, I bought it at a antique shop in Nashville, Indiana in 2011. They had old pennets from Big Ten schools and Utah State.
