Re: The Coaching Carousel Thread
Good list. You should have a separate section for rumored candidates that could fill the open slots. Specifically the USU slot.

Re: The Coaching Carousel Thread
He just finished his 2nd year at Wright State....only way we are getting him is if he thinks he is about to be fired at Wright State which isn't likely since he took 2nd in the Horizon conference. He probably gets a raise, an extension and sits tight

We can pay quite a bit more than Wright State.

Is that a data driven response or a knee jerk response? I believe he is making over 500k + incentives. 5 year deal.

Re: The Coaching Carousel Thread
If what Usuhoops is saying is true regarding Fox's contract, it sounds like he won't be coaching at CSU or USU or anywhere else next season. Basically he's saying that Fox is owed $1.7 million each year from Georgia as long as as he's actively seeking other positions. If he were to be hired though that buyout is then gone and he only makes whatever his new contract is paying him.
If that's true this whole 'Fox to CSU' rumor could only be done merely to satisfy the terms of the contract that he's actively seeking other positions.

I would think Fox to pitt is more likely than csu. I have thought fox is a stretch since the beginning but if we could get him than its an easy decision. Problem is once they get a taste of big money he isnt gonna come back unless he left somewhere disgraced

I mentioned we should look at Stephen F. Austin's coach without referencing his name -- now that I'm less lazy; it's Kyle Keller. He's had 2 very good years following Brad Underwood

Re: The Coaching Carousel Thread
Thanks Swish for listing the open jobs so we understand who we are competing against. If I had to rank the list in terms of general attractiveness, I'd list them something like:
Uconn (AAC) - It's hard to put an AAC team ahead of ACC teams but after-all this is UConn
Pittsburgh (ACC) - This is a rebuild job in a tough conference but you'll likely get at least 4 years
Louisville (ACC) - Possible sanctions coming could impact their coaching search. Who wants to clean up Pitino's mess?
Colorado State (MWC) - I think USU is a better gig, but CSU has a higher profile nationally
Utah State (MWC) - Good fan and community support at a "basketball school". You can have success at USU with the right formula
Fresno State (MWC) - Probably easier to recruit California athletes than at USU but I lived in Fresno for a couple years...
East Carolina (AAC) - Basement of AAC
Missouri State (MVC) - Lower profile conference than AAC but probably a better job
Charlotte (CUSA) - A once proud program is at the basement level now and needs a rebuild
San Diego (WCC) - Nice weather but the WCC is about to take a dive.
Others: Loyola (MD), Eastern Kentucky, Marist, Bryant, Western Carolina, High Point, Little Rock, USC Upstate, Longwood, Incarnate Word, Delaware State. - Most of these are lacrosse schools.
So, by my logic we are likely 5th in the pecking order as of today (unless I missed someone) and 2nd among schools west of the Mississippi River. There are a lot of capable coaches that have roots in the west and prefer life on this side of the country. I'd think we have a pretty good candidate pool.

Re: The Coaching Carousel Thread
Question, what are the chances Muss is out at Nevada? I could see him as a good candidate for Pitt this season... Our Nevada buddy has stated previously that he doesn't think Muss leaves this season, but next. If so, Nevada would probably be directly competing with USU for a coach. Maybe somewhere between CSU and USU, which isn't a huge gap, imo.

I would bet the Muss is gone from Nevada. There are and will be several big jobs opening. When the crap hits the fan at Arizona watch out. I could see him at PITT, long shot at UCONN and Louisville...... He will take a HM job somewhere.

I’m betting Muss stays at Nevada for one more year. They could be scary good next year and I think he’ll want to see where he can take them. Bigger jobs will be there next year too.

Having spent time in all three cities, I personally would put UNR far below USU and CSU, at least if we’re talking about the region they’re in. Reno is possibly one of the least happening cities I’ve ever been to. You know it’s bad when the downtown McDonald’s closes before midnight.flying_scotsman2.0 wrote: ↑March 16th, 2018, 2:43 pmQuestion, what are the chances Muss is out at Nevada? It’s not that bad, and it’s close to Lake Tahoe/California, but still, compared to Logan and Fort Collins, Reno stinks

Re: The Coaching Carousel Thread
I have been told by a friend in the college coaching industry that Keller is not likely to leave Stephen F. Austin. Has a deal kind of like Randy Rahe's-- decent money and no pressure to do anything but what he is. A place he can stay for a long time.
I think we rank the attractiveness of our coaching position a little high. True, a lot of things have been done to make it better (facilities improvements among them). But we're in a conference that is going to have Gonzaga in it next year. If you're a guy facing pressure to come in and turn a program around and "win," is that something you want to face-- from a coach's perspective. I think it may limit the field somewhat to the fairly young and enthusiastic and want to move up and willing to take a risk. We may not be able to make the "name" splash we once thought we could.

This maybe why Hartwell wants the hire complete before the final 4. If something, ie Gonzaga, is announced after that.AggiesForever wrote:I have been told by a friend in the college coaching industry that Keller is not likely to leave Stephen F. Austin. We're a better destination than CSU. Stew proved that 20 years ago. Better facilities, better team, better fans.AGGIEinIOWA wrote: ↑March 16th, 2018, 2:31 pmThanks Swish for listing the open jobs so we understand who we are competing against. Re: The Coaching Carousel Thread
I don’t think we want a coach who is afraid of playing a good team. A coach who is afraid of taking a job because he won’t have easy wins is not the caliber of coach or mentality that we want to turn a program around and wouldn’t be successful in turning a program around.AggiesForever wrote:I have been told by a friend in the college coaching industry that Keller is not likely to leave Stephen F. I want a coach who sees us playing Gonzaga, UNLV, SDSU, NM, BYU and Utah and says bring it on. I want a coach who looks forward to the challenge.
So if we are missing out on coaches who think like you describe I don’t think we are missing anything.
