Donovan Mitchell Contract

Post by Brushowl » April 10th, 2018, 5:15 pm

Assuming the Jazz have CAP space, could they revise Mitchell's contract and reward him for his exceptional performance?
Seems to me this would show Donovan, that he is wanted here for a long time. Does the collective bargaining agreement prohibit changes to an existing contract?

I don't believe so. Rookie contacts are basically determined by the CBA.

The nice thing is that we have Mitchell locked up for three years (2 + a team option) and then a minimum of three more as a restricted free agent. This team has an incredibly bright future.

You don't have much to worry about with Mitchell for a long time. He has been so good you forget he is only a rookie.

The way that it will be handled is once he is a RFA, they will offer him the max and not even have him test the waters as they did with Hayward. Apparently Gordon was upset that it took a max offer from Indiana to get the jazz to offer him a max. The jazz will be trying to lock Mitchell up long term at the max as soon as they possibly can. Not saying he will never leave, but will be handled much differently.

It was actually Charlotte that offered him the max, not Indiana.

After Mitchell's 3rd year, he'll be eligible for a maximum contract extension, which I bet will likely happen with the Jazz.

If not, they can pick up his team option for the 4th. Which would then give Mitchell two options following his 4th season:

A) opt out of his player option for his 5th year that's part of his rookie deal and allow him to become a restricted free agent. The Jazz could then match any deal he is offered.

B) Take his player option for the 5th year and make $7.1 million with the Jazz, which would then allow him to become an unrestricted free agent after the 5th year. This would be crazy to take though because he'd be leaving about $20 million on the table for that 5th year and then risking injury and giving up that guaranteed maximum contract money for the next 4 years.

Assuming the so-called "super max" stays in place, then I imagine Mitchell will qualify for that by the time he is eligible to receive it, which would make the chances of him leaving quite remote IMO.
