The last open assistant spot
I would imagine it's gotta be a minority with some coaching experience right? I don't think you can stay competitive in the recruiting world in college basketball with an all caucasian staff? Everyones thoughts?

I agree. I have a neighbor who is an assistant coach, whose ethnic background is Icelandic. I believe he has already applied. Should have a lock on the job. His wife is from Peru so that should also help.
I support our troops, especially the snipers.

By minority, you mean a black man. Right? If so, I agree. I think it would help.

Re: The last open assistant spot
Well. I’m lovin the cow picture.
Usu dairy now has automatic milking drones
They also provide a back massage. And a whole grain treat
Statistics show that cows like to get drained, walk in on their own when udderly full. They are getting on average 1/2 more milking a day
May work to put drone back massagers in therapy room. Now behave

Someone mentioned he was pretty self serving when they sat in on a coaching clinic with him and if that's true, no thanks. Besides, I wasn't a big fan of his offense.

I’m hoping for an Asian assistant. Maybe Hispanic to keep the south valley cartel at bay.

If we didn't need a Mormon coach or someone who knows Utah, why do we need a black coach? Go find the best guy out there, right?usuhoops wrote:Yes, we need a black assistant coach.

Re: The last open assistant spot
The need for a black coach is greater then the need for an lds coach. How many lds assistants worked for stew?
We need to widen our recruiting net and you can do that with a black asssistant coach moreso then an lds one. There are a limited number of lds kids with mid
Major plus talent. Where as 56 % of all college basketball players identify as being black

It didn't have to be either /or. Maybe Smith shouldn't have brought his Summit League staff with him.

Re: The last open assistant spot
I have the perfect solution. Alex Boye. He's black AND he is LDS. Sounds like a win to me based on this thread.
Personally, I think we need to go after the best coach possible. The coach needs to be able to develop players, recruit, and connect with the players. If they can connect, it won't matter all that much if they're black or white.

If we don’t hire an LDS/black/gay/transgender assistant for our last spot, I am DONE with this team.

I'll go further. I will organize boycotts for businesses that sponsor USU basketball. I will picket the University president and demand that people think the way I think.

I'll see your Alex Boye and I'll raise you to the tune of Thurl "Big-T" Bailey. Black, LDS, and he knows basketball. NBA (Jazz!) cred. Could coach our bigs (if we ever get any?). Maybe he could bring his son (Brendan?) with. MU is Koby's team now, anyway! Totally tongue-in-cheek, as I'm sure BigT is comfortable with his TV gig and won't be joining the NCAA coaching ranks any time soon...flying_scotsman2.0 wrote: ↑April 24th, 2018, 8:47 amI have the perfect solution. Nothing has blown me away yet. I'm afraid that next year is going to be worse than any of the previous 3 years. I sure hope I'm wrong though.
I like the energy that Smith brings and we needed a change from Duryea but I'm definitely not "Blown Away" by Smith, his previous accomplishments, the assistants he's brought with him, his new recruit, or his lack of counseling out previous year's poor performers. I'm not saying that he was a bad hire or that he's done a bad job thus far, just saying that other than his Energy and likability I haven't been "blown away" by anything. Hopefully, he can blow us away within the next year or two. Given his Salary and the resources he's been given I expect way more from him than I did from Timmy D.

Re: The last open assistant spot
Precisely.
The issue is whether a coach can/will accommodate missions. It's a fallacy that: no black players are ever LDS; that black players will only play if there's a black coach; and that an LDS player will only play for a n LDS coach.
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Re: The last open assistant spot
I think lds kids are willing to play at an in-state school irregardless of who is on the coaching staff. They are either homebodies or they already served a mission elsewhere and want to stay close to home.
However, black parents are going to have more anxiety about sending there kids to Utah in a predominantly white area. Throw in the blacks/revelation on the priesthood and it yes even stickier for black parents to feel comfortable sending there kids to Utah.
Having a black coach on staff gives reassurance from a person who knows what it isn't like to live here and a mentor to watch over their kid while he is in utah.
Essential!

I completely agree 100%!!! We need a black coach, no doubt. It will be a mistake to not have a black coach. We will be okay with not having a Mormon coach on staff.usuhoops wrote: ↑April 24th, 2018, 10:11 amI think lds kids are willing to play at an in-state school irregardless of who Simon the coaching staff. Black parents are concerned and have a reason to be.... Mormon parents are just glad there kid isn't far from home and going to an in-state school where the population is overwhelmingly LDS...

I don’t think we need to continue this thread. The decision has been made, and it shouldn’t matter.
