Regarding this possibly being a November game, the announcement does say September 3rd, 2022.

BREAKING: Fanbase That Can't Fill 25,000 Seat Stadium Consistently Is Upset that Football Team Has to Schedule Body Bag Game to Balance Budget
My concern is the reason the fan base can't fill a 25,000 seat stadium is in part due to early losses and injuries because of body bag games scheduled to balance the budget. I think 4+ touchdown losses to Wisconsin, USC, and Tennessee did more to kill any momentum than was built by close losses and going to bowl games. Like I said earlier, I understand it, but I would prefer USU move away from the scheduling an early season loss against the blue bloods.

TCU, Utah, and Boise State didn't schedule body bag games before they were BCS busters. The formula for USU football to get to a bowl game was created by GA when USU started scheduling FCS teams to get to six home games. The next step is to stop scheduling these games.
I agree with you, I don't love it, but I understand it.

I don't know this for sure, but I don't think these games result in more injuries than our normal games do. You can point to a bad injury in these games here and there, but not more than you could in our other games. I'd defer to a guy like Freakboy to do some analysis to better inform that opinion, but I think the injury point is moot.

I also think these games are absolutely vital to the financial health of the football program. If you sat down with an accountant with our financials, I'm 90% certain they'd tell you to take the payday.

I pulled Boise's schedule pre BCS Bust (2007 Fiesta Bowl) and found the following games that look like body bag games (P5 teams on the road with no return trip to Boise ):

1997: @Wisconsin
1998: None
1999: @#17 UCLA
2000: @ Arkansas
2001: @ #21 South Carolina
2002: @ Arkansas
2003: @ Oregon State (might not be a Body bag game, but OSU was way better in 03)
2004: None
2005: @Georgia
2006: none

It wasn't until Boise really got rolling that they stopped doing body bag games, but regularly did them until their program was built.

Utah played multiple P5 teams before they were in a P5/busted the BCS. Teams were much more willing to fly into SLC. I suspect that was a reason. If USU could get home and homes with P5 teams I'd be all for it. Would we be complaining about injuries then? We just aren't considered the opponent that Utah was. Utah had an impressive schedule leading up to their BCS bowl team, even if they did lose the majority of these games prior to 2004.
Utes
2000: AZ, @Cal, Washington State
2001: @ Oregon, @ Indiana
2002: @Arizona, @ Michigan, Indiana
2003: @ Texas AM, Cal, Oregon
2004: Texas AM, Arizona

I'm too lazy to get into TCU. Body bag games are important for building a programs financial viability. We will probably always need them based on our historic fan support.

As an NMSU fan, i share your concerns. We play at Alabama in 2019. The nice thing about Alabama is Saban doesn't try and run up the score for style points. He is all about winning and then moving on. I am sure their backups will get lots of playing time in the second half against us.

I actually might be coming around on this arrangement if it means no body bag game in 2021. That would be a step in the right direction and set up better future OOC schedules. My hopeful OOC schedule:

2021: G5, FCS, @ Washington State and @NMSU
2022: BYU, FCS, @G5 from prior year and @ Alabama

If the 2021 hypothetical G5 is rather @ Blue Blood I'm not happy. That means 2021 is the year USU makes up for the Wake Forest a 2-1.

I still don't think the AD press release touting the game as the third-largest dollar amount ever paid to a visiting football team is how you want to "sell" your team.

I don't know what USU's total gate for football will be in 2022 - but I can't imagine that it's anywhere near $1,910,000.

If that's the case does filling a 25,000 seat stadium for each game really matter?

I am sure the players like it as they get to play in a historic venue, I like it, even though it could be huge loss.

Really hope I can make this game. The pregame and tailgate scene is amazing there.

I would guess Sabah will have retired by then but his current number 1 recruiting class will Ben juniors and seniors. And if he is retired could the coach be Alabama alum Dabo?

This may be the big road trip I go to. the wifey will actually want to go, being a bama fan and all. I like the idea of playing the best every once in awhile. Its good to see exactly where you stand against the best.

With such a high pay day, I am concerned that this game is going to be played later in the season. Playing these games is one thing, but I hate the idea of playing Alabama in November.

Then again, I don't have $2 million so I better stop complaining and be glad the bills are being paid. :disappointed:
And when the September 3rd announcement came out I was proved wrong yet again... :disappointed: :bananafire:

I was in favor of getting our payday closer to home. We played USC, Washington. Stay away form the huge travel expenses. Play teams that are more finesse than someone like Alabama who wants to beat you down with a RB bigger than anyone on our defense.

It wasn't until Boise really got rolling that they stopped doing body bag games, but regularly did them until their program was built.
But you need to look at the other side of the coin as well. For every one of those seven "body bag" games, they played almost three OOC games against 1-AA/FCS, MAC and Sun Belt teams:

1997: Cal State Northridge (1-AA/FCS), Central Michigan, Weber State (1-AA/FCS)
1998: Cal State Northridge (1-AA/FCS), Portland State (1-AA/FCS), Weber State (1-AA/FCS), Louisiana Tech
1999: Southern Utah (1-AA/FCS), Eastern Washington (1-AA/FCS), Hawaii, New Mexico, Utah
2000: Northern Iowa (1-AA/FCS), Eastern Washington (1-AA/FCS), Central Michigan, New Mexico
2001: Idaho, Central Michigan
2002: Idaho, Wyoming, Utah State
2003: Idaho, Idaho State (1-AA/FCS), Wyoming
2004: Idaho, BYU
2005: Bowling Green, Portland State (1-AA/FCS)
2006: Sacramento State (1-AA/FCS), Wyoming, Utah

I wonder how USUs record over the last 30 years would look if for every body bag game, we played 3 games against 1-AA/FCS, MAC or Sun Belt type of schools instead of almost always playing BYU and Utah every year as well. Don't forget that for many years we played two body bag games, plus BYU and Utah. From 1985 to 1991 that is all we did outside of the Big West/PCAA games: 2 body bag games, BYU and Utah.

I'm sure that the extra million bucks from Bama will more than compensate for the additional gas the truck has to use and the extra two hours of flight on a chartered plane.

According to several news sites this is the fourth highest payout in CFB history. If we have to do money games to balance the budget this one was done well.

The downside is potential injuries.

I see no realistic alternative to taking that gamble. Our program doesn't generate enough revenue and if we want it to continue the bills have to be paid.

Those that think we lose revenue because of a loss to Alabama, need to understand that the $1.91 million we get is more than what our fan base gives for tickets for a entire six game home schedule.

If USU fans would support the school on a level near the top of what other MWC school do then the money game would not be needed.

I really, really like our conference and feel like it provides appropriate peers to use as measuring sticks for where we are as a program. I, too, would like to see us be near or at the top of the conference in fan support (as well as everything else). Of course, if we were to support the school at the same level as Alabama fans I would begin to question our collective priorities.

The fan support at USU is not good, forget Alabama the ewe of ewe get $25 million per year in ticket sales, and donations while USU is at $5 million.

Those that think we lose revenue because of a loss to Alabama, need to understand that the $1.91 million we get is more than what our fan base gives for tickets for a entire six game home schedule.

If USU fans would support the school on a level near the top of what other MWC school do then the money game would not be needed.
I don't think USU loses money because of one loss to Alabama from playing a money game. My though is that USU playing 4-5 home games a year for decades with at least one money game and Utah and BYU and without a FCS team to balance the game in the past put coaches in the position of trying to never have a mediocre year (like last season). This lead to a declining fan base, USU had better relative attendance in the 70's and 80's then they currently do. Certainly attendance was better than in the 2000's.

Alabama knows that it's smart to scheduling wins at home rather than a home and home with another team. With an away game they are much more likely to lose. Fans like winning more than they like losses to good teams (Stew's teams). The improvement in football attendance from the early 2000 through last year is partly due to fans watching teams that can still have a good season at 6-7 and watching the team win a lot of home games rather than 5 or less wins a schedule built like it was prior to 2009 would allowed.
