Ashworth Update

Post by 2004AG » June 23rd, 2018, 11:34 am

FWIW, Smith has been in contact with Ashworth and has recruited him however Ashworth has heard from a lot of other schools and sounds like the final decision will be made when he gets back from his mission.

I thought he had signed a letter of intent before he left on his mission. I guess that means nothing these day's. I just might cut him loose now. and look else where.

Unfortunately it seems now a days kids play for coaches and not for teams and schools. (Some exceptions like Merrill).

If a kid sign's his LOI, and before attending any class work decides to shop around, then it is time USU to look else where. Holding his scholarship then having him switch at the last can cause a real can of worm's. We now have time to find someone else to replace him.

That is exactly how it is.

And I would rather have someone who wants to play for coach Smith than someone who don't.

Is he hearing from lots of schools and fielding calls from Smith while on his mission, or is he yet to go?

Since he signed a letter of intent, coaches better not be contacting him. That would be a recruiting violation unless he reaches out.

If he is reaching out to other schools then USU needs to pull the cord, offer him a out now. If he would have played for USU with T.D. as the coach, but does not want to play for Smith then good, just help him leave.

Everything factors into a kids decision, coach, school, location, facilities, academics, perhaps he thinks he can do better. Logan, and USU are not for everyone.

Let him go, he would not be the first mission kid to bail.

Huh? What are you even talking about? Why do you want him to go? Go outside and enjoy summer.

I'm actually really smart, probably smarter than you are so if you disagree with what I have stated in this post, you are likely wrong (and dumb).

Or if he is as good as many believe we should fight to keep him. For any great high school player you are going to have other schools that want him.

I talked to Ashworth's parents tonight. It sounds like Coach Smith writes him every week and they keep in contact with coach as well. The whole family is really excited about the direction that the basketball program is going in and it sounds like he's all in.

'Cruitin' gets a lot easier when you're winning 28 games, championships, making the tournament, etc...

Smith writes him weekly? That is awesome. I wonder if with the new rule changes if coach smith should go visit his family on one of the weekly phone call days?

Agreed. We have a real opportunity to cash in on our success this year. Success breeds more success.

Now that’s Stevens dad is a coach on Lone Peak, hopefully he can sway Pollard our way to play with his son.

I'm not sure we're recruiting Jaxon Pollard anymore. I haven't heard his named mentioned.

The location of the school the facilities social life all are a factor for kids. It is more than just the coach.

I don’t know why we’re questioning Smith on anything at this point.

I won't be shocked when he's called as bishop of his local ward
