Crowd

Post by bluegrouse » September 23rd, 2018, 1:39 am

I’ve been very critical of fan support but that was a nice crowd tonight for a late, non-Instate/Boise game. Great to see people show up.

The game was an adventure but we didn’t fold and found a way to win a very, very important game. The time of possession differential was absurd. Our D was on the field for 3/4 of the game.

That was their own fault for being on the field so long. They couldn’t get stops.

To be fair, our offense isn’t exactly built to give them big breaks.

Well bless your heart, that’s just not true. Our longest TD drive took I believe just over 2 minutes? And we had a couple drives that took under a minute. That’s just how it’s going to be with a fast paced offense. Didn’t help this week that we played against a clock eating triple option team.

Looks like reported attendance was about 22.7K, which is pretty good considering how many folks showed up to Games 1 and 2 as well as the late start time. If we beat BYU in two weeks, the UNLV game should be a madhouse.

Seriously? We had multiple scoring drives of less than a minute on offense. Doesn’t give the D much time to rest.

Yeah, that’s exactly how USU expected it to go. You combine their triple option methodical offense with USU’s crazy fast-paced offense and that’s what will happen. It was effective though, and Wells put together a defense with enough depth that it worked.

Wasn't the Air Force offense on the field the same amount of time as our defense? I've always wondered why the defense gets tired and not the offense.

I think it’s because the offense knows what they’re doing and the defense is reacting.

I’m not at all concerned about the possession of time thing. It includes the time that the clock runs between plays after a run. AFA ran 86 running plays, which adds up to a lot of time.

Who is left on our schedule that will run that many times?

Our fast-paced offense will still give the other team more possession time, and our defense will still be on the field longer and will get tired. But if our offense can score on their possessions (and they’ve clearly shown that they can), we’ll have little to worry about

To be clear, I wasn’t complaining nor am I concerned about TOP. Just merely making an observation that it was crazily lop-sided. We did what we needed to do to win and the TOP and score could easily have been even more lop-sided had we made a few more plays.

I'm more worried that we can't pick up one yard on the ground when we need it.

Exactly. A win is a win is a win. You get exactly zero points for winning the time of possession battle.

We’ve played the #1 and #2 run defense in the country to this point. I’m truly not concerned about the run game.

Yeah, the crowd was great and you are correct about our offensive strategy.

Awesome crowd. The HURD has been great. Winning this game with the excitement that was there will go a long ways in helping.

As far as time of possession goes. I quite frankly could care less the difference. The only thing that matters at the end is who scores the most points. I love stats, but all that matters to me is who scores the most points.

Doesn’t BYUseless have a decent run D?
