Re: Questions about Prop 1
That sounds like a nice thing to do for a private school. Perhaps if rich guy wants to give his kid an advantage, rich guy should consider sending his kid to one of those?

Re: Questions about Prop 1
You mean our legislature would have to have some balls and fund schools with taxes instead of refusing to raise taxes so they look like good conservatives and pushing fund-raising through back-door methods? What's wrong with that?2004AG wrote: ↑November 6th, 2018, 9:36 amYa and all the extra donations would dry up to zero.brownjeans wrote:I'd feel better about paying more taxes for public education if public education provided equal access. This would require all schools to be funded equally based on enrollment. It would also require all extra donations to be put into a pool and divided equally based on enrollment (ending direct, private donations to a specific school).

Re: Questions about Prop 1
Uninformed people keep stating this, but it is not factual. Utah in #49 in the nation relative to the ratio of administrators to students.
The approach on this proposition was very bad. Mixing a road tax with education funding was stupid. Fund roads separately from education. It's better to fund education using state imcome tax that is earmarked already for education. However, if you want to use a gas tax to do so specifically dedicate a percentage of the sales tax revenue to go to education. The same is already done for water infrastructure. But don't throw all of the $ into a pot to be divied up.
Better yet, improve funding for education either by eliminating the state income tax deduction for those with more than [choose a number] children OR by implementing a head tax.
Re: Questions about Prop 1
The best way to raise money for education if it s insisted upon is to impose a lodging tax. Utah has a lot of tourists, let them pay for it.

Re: Questions about Prop 1
I guess the only fair tax is the one someone else pays.
A lodging tax is more disconnected from funding the education from our children than a gas tax is. The state does not receive $ from the transient room tax. Only counties and municipalities do. Regardless, Salt Lake City received a total of $2.8 million from this tax during 2015, the last year I could find records. Even dedicating 100% of that amount to the educating of Salt Lake City's children would represent less than a 1% revenue increase in the Salt Lake School District's budget. It would be much less in the majority of other school districts. You'll need to think through this notion through a bit more.
Why not have those that use the system pay more to sustain it?
