I don’t think Frank is a shoe in either. I think everyone including the administration thinks because he’s alum and been coaching here that he’s staying. I wonder if he’s feeling a little under appreciated, especially after being named interim and then getting his interview cacncelled. I would hope and pray that GA’s first phone call would be to him. He is such a great coach and recruiter and we absolutely need to keep him here!

Gary's assistants?
Could we lure Calvillo away from CFL? Having the all time professional football passing king on staff could be helpful.

Re: Gary's assistants?
I’m sure there are plenty of former Aggies, and maybe even some Badgers looking to get into coaching. Turbin and Williams aren’t in the NFL any longer- good option for RB coach if they want in.(maybe below their pay grade but an option to stay in football- if they don’t make a roster soon)
Idk a thing about former badgers, but I think there are some options for oline and lb coaches. Bojay come in from SJSU? Will Davis is probably not making that much on the Stallions, can he be convinced to come to Logan?
I think we have a ton of young and exciting options at the lower levels.
OC and DC may take some doing. But it’s doable.

I would think it would take some time to readjust to the American game. CFL passing leader is like being the prettiest girl in Rock Springs.AGGIEinIOWA wrote:Could we lure Calvillo away from CFL? Having the all time professional football passing king on staff could be helpful.

Re: Gary's assistants?
I think we will for sure be good on the defense side. I do worry about getting in some good offensive coaches. With all the weapons we have coming back on offense I have to believe it will be a desirable spot for some offensive coaches.

I would have Calvillo as QB coach or passing game coordinator or something first, then work into OC. There have been plenty of CFL coaches cross over to college football and make their mark. Joe Tiller was a CFL guy that was known as one of the innovators of the spread offense and the last Purdue coach to win a Big10 title. I also grew up watching Mike Riley coach the Blue Bombers and then go on to have success at Oregon State...the last time the Beavers were any good. I'm sure there are more examples but those are the two that come to mind. I think the CFL is very innovative and Yost's play calling actually would carry over to the CFL rather well.

Disagree. Being the CFL's all-time passing leader is more like being the prettiest girl in Boston. A smaller city not exactly known for women who make looks their top priority, but still . . . .TheAKAggie wrote: ↑December 9th, 2018, 6:38 pmI would think it would take some time to readjust to the American game. Re: Gary's assistants?
This may be a dumb question, but it’s coming from a dumb person, so whatever: Did Hartwell have any input at all in the hiring process for Yost and Patterson or was that all Wells’ doing? Hartwell seems to have a good track record for coaching hires and if he had a hand in hiring Wells’ assistants then we ought to be in decent shape.
I just have no idea how much say (if any) an AD has when it comes to hiring assistants. Don’t even know if he should have any.

That is a very painful comparison.

Sure let's add snookie and this dude on my street that rocks a Dan Fouts jersey while we are at it.

I'd like this better if the dude on your street was also rocking Dan's beard and sixhead (50% larger than a forehead).

Re: Gary's assistants?
I believe more than one Sunday interview was cancelled because a deal with Gary had been agreed to later on Saturday. What would cause either scheduled party at the Sunday interview table to want to pursue a discussion for a position that was no longer available?Elkaggie wrote: ↑December 9th, 2018, 4:07 pmI don’t think Frank is a shoe in either. Re: Gary's assistants?
I don't know if we SHOULD, but I am worried about that just the same. It's the main thing I'm worried about. The success/failure of the team relies very much on our assistants.
If Clune and Baldwin show up, my jeans will be browner.

Re: Gary's assistants?
100% agree and will brown my slacks as well. The assistant anticipation is killing me. Frank is a no-brainer to me and is an awesome assistant. Hope to hear good news soon and I trust Hartwell will be helping find some good assistants.

Re: Gary's assistants?
It looks like Baldwin didn't coach anywhere in 2018 and Clune is currently at Memphis as a senior defensive assistant. Let's hope they stay where they are. Hire Mike Sanford Jr.!!brownjeans wrote: ↑December 11th, 2018, 8:43 amI don't know if we SHOULD, but I am worried about that just the same. It's the main thing I'm worried about. Re: Gary's assistants?
I really hope Gary learned his lesson at Oregon State about his assistants and steers clear of Baldwin, Clune, Mcgiven, etc.

Re: Gary's assistants?
The OC is really what I am most interested in. That single hire will make or break this current team over the next couple of years. What other names could be potential targets for OC beside the aforementioned Mike Sanford (The Younger) <---trying to save AK from an aneurysm so he doesn't have to clarify that they are not Jr. and Sr. one more time.
It's one of the things that gave me cause for concern about hiring GA, his offenses and OC's have not really been all that dynamic. His best combo at USU was Wells with Sanford (The Elder) as a mentor, at Wiscy he had Andy Ludwig and except for immense depth at RB, they didn't really ever have the personnel to run a more spread offense like GA would have liked. They also made poor QB choices during his time there. The poor QB choices continued at OSU too, with Seth Collins leaving, then staying, then switching to WR, bringing in retread Darrell Garretson, sending McMaryion packing by choosing to go with JC Jake Luton as the starter, etc. They did suffer a lot of QB injuries during his time at OSU but it also never seemed like they had a good offensive scheme or game plan.
I don't mind GA as a HC, but he really needs to find the right guy for the OC position to put me at ease.

Re: Gary's assistants?
GA confirming that he has indeed finalized some of the positions (DC sounds like one of them), just waiting for final approval from the AD to announce them. Also interesting to hear him on 1280 after the press conference tell Hans and Scotty that his first thoughts were to be the DC himself, but he had since thought about it more and decided to go away from that direction. I'm glad he is not trying to be HC and DC.
