CBSsports not a fan of the GA hire

Post by FormerlyVegasAggie71 » December 17th, 2018, 1:30 pm

Dennis Dodd of cbssports just published a "Coaching Carousel" winners and losers. Among a bunch of winners he listed Texas Tech as a winner and gave them a B+ for hiring Wells.

He had a few "jury is still out" on some guys, and listed USU as the only "loser" giving us an F.

His comments: "The Aggies replaced one of the top, rising coaches (Wells) with a retread. Not only is Andersen a retread, he's walked out on Wisconsin and Oregon State. Somehow, Utah State hired back a coach who was only 26-24 in his first go-round with the Aggies before leaving in 2012. In a 30-year coaching career, Andersen has stayed at one place (Utah) longer than four years. In those 30 years, he's been at 10 different schools. Utah somehow hired him three different times. Career record: 57-61. Good luck, Aggies."

Can't wait to prove Mr. Dodd wrong on this one. He shows a lack of understanding for the first go-around. I do agree that it is a risk to bring Gary back.

Dodds is showing his ignorance. Failed to mention Gary turned around one of the worst college football programs in the country and gave the formula to Wells.

It's been said several times before but anyone that looks at his record without looking at where the program was before he got here just isn't paying attention. The program under Andersen was on an upward trajectory the entire time he was here.

That tells you that we aren't the only one that see's something in him.

It is still by most measures a risky hire, one that only Utah State could have pulled off.

Short of hiring Urban Meyer or Nick Saban, coaching hires are "risky".

I don't think he understands that USU will be a revolving door for head coaches...you lose you're fired, you win you move on. Anderson gives us the best chance of avoiding that and is worth the risk. If nothing else the general euphoria around USU football is really fresh!

Even Urban Meyer is pretty risky in terms of a school's potential future liabilities right now!

He can think what he wants. He’s just wrong. He gets paid to write, Gary gets paid to coach.

I was about to say the same thing. GA isn't the "sexy" hire like an up and coming FCS coach would have been and maybe four or five years is the longest he can stay in one place, but I guarantee it is longer than a young FCS coach would stay if he found success here.

What he also fails to mention is the role of the coordinators. When you surround yourself with great coordinators, it makes the HC look good. When you have mediocre guys?

Is Wells really a "top" coach, or is Yost a top OC?

He gave the Locksley hire a B+? That hire by Maryland is probably the worst hire in the history of coaching hires.

Don’t care at all what he thinks about us in light of that.

Exactly...26-24 may not sound terribly impressive but when compared to 9-38 in the four years prior, that's quite an accomplishment!

Sans GA, there would have been no HC Matt Wells.

What I like about the GA hire is that he wants to live in Logan, and has the time to build the program and be a coaching institution like Snyder at K-State.

Hope he's wrong.

His reasoning isn't flawed. There is more to the story than what he says. But the more I think about it, the more worried I get.

Eff it, I hope he's wrong.

I hope and think GA will prove him wrong but his logic is more than sound and I am sure it is the way most of the football world sees it. What Gary did at both Wisky and OSU is perplexing at best. Cant argue with his logic.

I don't see what he did at Wisconsin as perplexing. He followed up a coach that bolted for a lesser P5 job the first chance he got because he didn't like working for the AD that was their. Gary had success at Wisconsin but appears to have had the same issues with the AD.

I'm not at all perplexed about what he did at Wisconsin or his choice to leave after two years under an extremely controlling AD. I think he did a commendable job.

His questionable choice was going to OSU, and then the coaches he hired there, and everything that happened after.

I agree those are fair points to discuss and potential cause for concern. However, I agree with others that citing his coaching record at USU the first time around completely lacks context of how he turned things around here.

I also found it interesting that he is fine with and actually ranks very highly other "retreads" like Les Miles and Mike Locksley, but not GA.

The same Les Miles that won a national championship, two SEC titles, had been to 14 bowl games and has a 142-55 while coaching most of his games in the Big 10, Big XII, and SEC?

That is a Helluva hire for Kansas.

Gary comes with risks. It isnt a high confidence hire to me. But it certainly isnt an F. Guy must have been stood up by a USU alum or something.

My point wasn't that Les can't coach, my point was the author was fine with retreads in some spots, while he used it as a knock against GA. And Les was clearly slipping the last few years, will be interesting to see what he does at Kansas, same with Mack at UNC and Locksley at MD.

This is because of the Oregon State fiasco. I hope for the best but prepare for the worst. His hiring will either be boom Image or bust. I just don’t see a middling job,
