1280: One last Wells interview

Post by aceofspadeskb » December 17th, 2018, 2:30 pm

1280 is just completing one last interview with coach Wells. Will post the link later(unless someone beats me to it. Feel free).

I'm extremely impressed with how much Wells has grown during his time at Utah State. At the start of his tenure he always seemed to be a little bit fake. More talk than action. Now, he honestly seems to be one of the more genuine people who have ever come in/out of our program. I'm very happy for him. $18 mil is a great payday and I wish him all the best. Probably his best interview to date.

points of the interview:
* Talked about not being able to focus on his job at TT during the bowl gameday. Even left a meeting he was supposed to be to to go watch the game.
* Talked about the car crash.
* Talked about Yost heading back to coach the team and why he couldn't make it to the game.
* Talked about Gary
* Even talked about "the punt"

That was a really good interview. I gained some respect for Wells.

I think he is a class act. I sent him a very short e-mail wishing him the best and thanking him for being an Aggie. I actually got a personal response and thank you back - much better than what I sent.
I wish CW and his family the best too.

Wells was always up front and honest about his desire to get a bigger job. Never actually committed to us at all. I for one felt like he was out for a payday period.

Whatever man. Matt Wells is a good dude. He did what he thought was right for he and his family. I wish him all the best and all the success in the world.

While that is the truth at Utah State, it's even more true at Texas Tech. If he thinks that dealing with a fanbase as small as Utah State's is then he may be in for a surprise.

Anyway, here is the audio of the interview:

He said it in the context of he himself being an alumnus. In other words, he wants the program to keep winning to make him happy. Wasn’t complaining about anything.

Thanks. I haven't had a chance to listen yet. Guess I should do that before I judge.

Tremendous interview. Wells got emotional toward the end. It's evident that he loves USU.

Did they ask why he's making 5x more than Yost?

He was moved a lot of the interview. Don’t think I ever doubted he loved being here and at the same time, knew he was listening to offers so it makes it not hurt as bad this time. I had moments where I too questioned his coaching style and wondered if they should let him go but never doubted he’s a good guy and he’s an Aggie.

Because he's head coach. He'll get blamed for everything - even if the offense were to stink, it will be his fault for bringing Yost with him. If they do well, he'll get credit - for bringing in the right assistants.

In return, he gets paid lottery type money and most likely, will not ride off into the sunset. Most coaches end their careers by getting fired.

I always liked him and hope he does well.

That's great to hear! He's responded to every email I've sent him over the years which I find amazing. I always thought he was a good guy and it was neat to watch him learn and improve as a coach.

Hope he tears it up at TT because it only reflects well on USU.

Sorry, but I'd happily skip away from USU if I was offered $18million. I love USU, I love Logan, and will always be proud to be an Aggie. But $18 million for six years, nearly three times what USU could offer him, makes it a no-brainer. I do not blame him in the slightest. His family will be well taken care of for a few generations. I wish him all the best and thank him for all he has done.

Yes. 79 years old and every bit of it to listen to on the radio.

I enjoy listening to Mac on the radio, although he was better when they had him tag teaming with Lavell. Lavell's last year on the show you could tell he was going downhill.

5x is a lot higher ratio than most coaches / main coordinators, especially good ones. If I were Yost I'd feel very overlooked right now.

Exactly.

I suspect Wells will be a generous donor to USU for many years to come.

I wish him well and am grateful that overall he has helped our program continue to build towards its long term goals (MWC Championship and a better reputation).

Unless you find that one gem, a Stew Morrill type of person, USU will always be a stepping stone, that's just a fact. If GA is wildly successful here, don't be surprised to see him bail AGAIN, but this time I don't think he'll rush the gold. I can see him taking the Utah Job or a PAC 12 South (warm weather) job. I could be wrong, maybe he'll stay. We'll see. With that said, to my one-time classmate and acquaintance:

:thanks: to you Mr. Wells.

Could we get Mac to replace PK? That would be a major upgrade.

I don't think he's a pain to listen to if someone is asking him questions or asking him for a good story but he's not that great at doing the interview that's for sure.

Hearing him get emotional showed me how hard these decisions can be.

Mac’s loud breathing in the mic gets annoying
