WR Siaosi Mariner transferring from Utah

Post by Roy McAvoy » January 8th, 2019, 9:58 am

Have to think there's some potential he comes to USU. He is a grad transfer eligible next season. He's had 22 starts in 3 seasons at Utah.

Would be absolutely a perfect fit. Those in the know — good chance this happens?

With our Utah staff connections and Jordan Love, I gotta like our chances if he is looking for immediate playing time and is okay with staying in Utah.

Is he any good? I watched a couple of their games, and wasn't impressed with their receivers. A lot of dropped balls, and a few quit on routes.

Jalen Greene was not much at USC, but he did well here. Mainer might do the same thing, and he would give us an older wr who is ready to go. We need bigger WRs too.

The difference between Jalen and Siaosi is that Jalen left because he couldn't AND never was going to crack the starting lineup. Most WRs at USC that start end up in the NFL, including Aaren Vaughns little brother Tyler. Siaosi has very little production to show for being a 2 or 3 year starter. You want to compare Jalen and Siaosi? Compare what they did this season.

Jalen Greene 44 receptions 689 yards 6 TDs
Siaosi Mariner 17 receptions 209 yards 1 TD

I won’t say Mariner is as good as Greene, but I strongly disagree with your logic here. Jordan Love is a far superior passing QB than any one Mariner had throwing him the ball at Utah the past 3 years.

I know the counterargument: "But! But! But! Pac-friggin-12!"

Depends on what else we have. We may very well need a receiver that failed at Utah.

No, the counterargument is the real story. He's had injury problems. That's what limited his stats.

He may not be an amazing receiver, but that cupboard at outside WR is pretty bare right now. He would absolutely be a starter day 1 given our roster as currently constructed.

I'm fine with taking transfers from other in-state schools and making something of them. Talk to Roman Andrus or Quin Ficklin about this if you would like.

He's got to work on not dropping passes. This literally cost Utah a championship.

But if he can improve on that area, he's a P5 athlete that would help improve our WR depth.

Aside from Covey, who's the last successful receiver the U has had? It's a graveyard of receivers.

I heard that Boise State is interested in Mariner if that helps anyone's perception of his abilities.

If we were deep at receiver i would say to not pursue him, but we are not. Yea his stats are not outstanding, but if he can come in and catch 25 catches for 250 yards and 3-4 touchdowns I think it is no brainer. He is also only here for 1 year so if it is a flop it is not a big deal. Those stats were against good competition as well. I also look at it as is someone from the JC ranks going to be any better, the answer is nobody knows. I hope we give him a look and he is interested.

He may pan out. He may not.But unless he has a bad attitude or off the field problems why wouldn't we offer a scholarship for a year and let him compete. His numbers indicate that at the very least he can be a good role receiver and he has experience. Why wouldn't you see what he can do?

Is he any good? I watched a couple of their games, and wasn't impressed with their receivers. A lot of dropped balls, and a few quit on routes.
Not trying to be cheeky, but that sounds like Tarver. He was great if he was focused, but there were plays he was pretty casual about things.
