I think it’s time to retire Crazy Train and try something new at the start of the half. Time for a refresh on a lot of things to bring the magic and excitement back to the Spectrum.

Re: Student attendance
That was not an interesting game, so I can't fault the students. Did we learn anything. my only takeaway was that Miller can shoot, which I kind of thought last year before he was injured.

I don't think there has ever been a year where playing a team of MVSU's level in the first half of November would have drawn a crowd to be remembered.

Re: Student attendance
We’ve only had one other real game (exhibition means nothing to most people), and the student attendance was definitely better when we played Hartford (and also Evergreen State). Not great for any games yet, but that is to be expected early in the season coming off a bad year and playing bad teams.TheAKAggie wrote: ↑November 14th, 2018, 12:23 amI missed the first two games, were the students more populous?

Re: Student attendance
Coming off quite a few bad years. It took years to build up spectrum magic to what it was. It's been gone for a while. Current students have no memory or recollection of how good it used to be. I hope we can build it back to what it was, but it's going to take time.TrueAggieman wrote: ↑November 14th, 2018, 10:44 amWe’ve only had one other real game (exhibition means nothing to most people), and the student attendance was definitely better when we played Hartford (and also Evergreen State). Re: Student attendance
I gave a couple of lectures on campus today and mentioned that the students should be going to basketball games. I think attendance will pick up based off their response. It seems like the opponent and weekday was a bad combination.
One student told me just her professor asked for her student ID so they could go to the game without paying. WTF is that about?

Re: Student attendance
The way student IDs get people into games for free, it's pretty common for people to borrow IDs to get into games. Cheerleaders who obviously just walk in to do their job and not swipe their ID will sometimes lend out their IDs to family and friends. I have also heard of ASUSU officers who have special credentials(and don't need to swipe their ID) lending out their IDs to friends. One year, when we played BYU in football, I heard that alot of BYU students were trying to find IDs of people not going to swipe. My brother who is a Ute and wanted to come cheer for them when we played them but didn't want to pay once borrowed an ID from someone who likes to play Halo instead of going to games. People will sometimes even post on facebook asking if there are any female or male IDs a friend can use.QuackAttackAggie wrote: ↑November 15th, 2018, 11:39 pmOne student told me just her professor asked for her student ID so they could go to the game without paying. It's likely that professor can still pass as a student or at least a grad student, is female, and the student is not a sports fan, or at least didn't make her lack of interest in sports obvious to the professor.
There have a few times been stories in the statesman police blotter of non-students getting caught with IDs, but most people who do it get away with it.

Re: Student attendance
That study that said Utah was #1 was from nearly 10 years ago, hasn’t been replicated and PornHub’s annual report shows that Utah is nowhere near the highest consumer. Which has far better inputs than Edelman did. Edelman used 1 single site to determine this (but we don’t know which one) - and the conclusion often drawn is illogical with this study because even in the study there wasn’t an increase in porn usage with states that correlated to the LDS populace of that state.
That being said, based on sine of the analysis in the Edelman study- there may have been a political agenda, but I’m not claiming there was- just that I’m suspicious.
I had a “journalism” professor- who taught a class on media bias and used this study. When I pointed out the above points, I was basically kicked out of her class. Best decision I ever made leaving that class- I changed my major and make more money than she does- and she has a phd with decades of experience. I have a masters with only 3 years experience. Good thing she disuaded me from majoring in journalism

Additionally, there was an advertisement for the 2017 homecoming football game coming up in October of last year. Re: Student attendance
I'm new to this board, so this probably deserves it is own topic but I can't start a new topic yet. As a student, I see the student attendance increasing, especially against Fresno, but the student energy still seems flat. Unfortunately, students don't seem as interested in going to the games, and have gravitated more towards the atmosphere of the hockey games. If you go to one of those, you will see its packed and insanely loud, even though they lose games. Obviously something needs to change to bring that back. Coach Smith has a huge been a huge addition and came to revive Spectrum Magic, but if fans/students do nothing its not going to change. Plus, Craig Smith almost had to spend more time cheering for that students to get loud than coaching I swear. I was in Junior High during the Spectrum Magic days and as a student now, I want to see that come back. Its seems as if the students don't even remember how to do that anymore. Since that was a while ago and I was pretty young, I don't remember all the cheers and what made it crazy. Besides the regular "I believe", "winning team losing team", "go big blue", and "right left right left" is about all we are capable of now, it seems we could do a lot more. Does anyone have any good ideas of cheers/chants that are catchy and can get the spectrum rocking all game long again? Its pathetic that student are willing to drive 10 minutes to a cold icy arena to pay 5 bucks, watch 2-3 goals, and a couple good hits when we can all get into the spectrum for free in a high intensity arena with a history of a great atmosphere.

Re: Student attendance
I don’t have any ideas for catchy cheers but I would suggest just making noise when the Aggies are on D. To me that is what really made the Spectrum awesome was the overall energy throughout the game especially when on defense.

Re: Student attendance
I was part of a group of guys that came up with 75% of the cheers used today. We just tried different things. Sometimes they worked and sometimes they didn’t. We usually had at least one cheer directed at a specific opposing player, something we researched. I would agree though that just getting loud on defense goes a long way to get people going and create a good atmosphere.

I remember some of those personal cheers. "Run like a man" for fazekas, "Gary Coleman" for some Weber State player that was under 6 ft tall, and others. Re: Student attendance
I went to Duke for grad school and experienced some of the Cameron Crazies magic. One of my favorites that they do is as they are announcing the names of the opposing team during their introductions, the students loudly give that player a sarcastic welcome. For example, if Cody Martin was introduced, the students would give a loud "Hi Cody!". Kind of like a "Hi Cody, we're going to have fun getting under your skin tonight". Hopefully that makes sense.

Re: Student attendance
I thought the double arm pump was a result of a game against Paul George's Fresno State team where we held them scoreless for over 5 minutes. A lady on their bench enthusiastically pumped her arms when they finally scored, and the student section started doing it every time something went right for Fresno, which wasn't often in that game.QuackAttackAggie wrote: ↑January 11th, 2019, 1:33 amUgly duckling. Student section just needs a leader... or a few leaders. I think thats the diff between now amd 8 years ago. Any students on here willing to be front row for every game and get things back in order?
Im sure wild bill has long moved on but USU should pay him a lot of money to come back for a season and show the young guns how it's done.
