Ainge continuing to start

Post by GameFAQSAggie » January 16th, 2019, 10:49 pm

I would have thought after the last game where we started Ainge, fell behind to someone we were favored against, then rallied with him on the bench, we would bench him. But no, we start him again tonight, fall behind with him on the court to someone we are supposed to jump on, and rally with him on the bench.

So the question is, WHEN do we bench Ainge and start Brito? Someone needs to ask Smith at a luncheon or on the radio. Maybe it can get asked enough that he gets sick of it and it becomes his scheduling topic. It doesn't look like scheduling is a sensitive subject to Smith like it was to Stew, so maybe continuing to get asked about starting Ainge cause of his last name can become the topic that he gets sick of the way Stew got sick of the scheduling topic. A Utah State basketball coach just isn't a Utah State basketball coach without some sensitive topic they get sick of being asked about.

I really don't want to pile on the kid, but he is in over his head. If Jaxson Mayer wasn't good enough at the WAC level them I'm not sure what to make of this situation.

These slow starts are killing us.

TK has been challenged to step up in practice and earn more minutes and over the last two weeks he has responded very well. I think we'll begin to see TK much earlier in games soon.

Contractually, we are obligated to start Ainge the entire season if we want the remainder of the Daddy Ainge donation.

The contract, for the most part, is mutually beneficial. It helps get our name out in the New England area to have the GM of the Boston Celtics telling people that he has a son who starts for Utah State, and it helps the GM of the Boston Celtics feel good about life to think he has a son starting for a 13-5 MWC team. I just hope it is for this season only.

You could theoretically start Ainge and only play him 1-2 minutes a game. Win-win. I'm not gonna act like I'm an expert on basketball, but from my vantage point, I'm not sure what Ainge brings to this team, let alone how he is better than Porter or Knight.

Well, that one seems to have been settled. Despite Porter and Knight setting an awfully low bar, Ainge hasn't quite been able to clear it.

I don't think that Anige will start after the way TK played against SJSU.

Then we can probably flush the second half of the $1M donation Daddy Ainge pledged so his son could be a D1 starter for a season.

I am fine with Ainge getting 8-10 minutes in 2-3 minute spurts, but not starting. These last 2 games have been terrible starting for him. WYO he missed 3 wide open 3's and against SJSU he turned the ball over 2-3 times in the first few minutes. I am not ragging on the kid, obviously could run circles around me, but to me Knight/Abel should start or we go no point guard and put in Brito.

You would also think that it could cause turmoil amongst the team to know favoritism is shown if your dad is the right person.

I don't care who starts. Go ahead and start Ainge, sub him the first dead ball and put him far, far away from the scorers table for the rest of the game.

Its all BS. Ainge hasn't promised anything to USU.

It is not important who starts the game, but who finishes them. If he starts and plays 4-5 minutes like he has done, his impact is minimal. He rarely sees the floor after that.

Normally I would agree, but we are starting slow and holes like that are hard to dig out of. We can get away with it against SJSU and Wyoming, but we will not always be so lucky.

Exactly, the slow starts have got to stop. It's been consistent enough now that a shakeup is necessary.

Source level?
Source Level 1.

I pulled it right out of my a$$.

So maybe that should be Source Level #2?

Just trying to find some rational reason for Ainge starting -- or getting any meaningful playing time at all. Maybe the kid busts his a$$ at practice.

This x100. We have a tough stretch of road games coming up. Our next 3 on the road are @New Mexico, @Fresno and @SDSU. If the team falls behind by double digits in those games as we've seen in the last 2, they won't be able to dig out of it. TK's ability to get to the rim at will can create more open looks from outside as well as dump-offs to Queta. Having Ainge on the floor is basically playing 4 on 5 offensively.

Guy has earned his spot, how many starting Point Guards can average 10% for 3 and 55% from the line? Bonus he almost has 1:1 Assist to Turnover ratio. His starting is a joke

You have a case for Duryea recruiting him, but it's not Duryea's fault he continues to start.
