Conf Tourney Tie Breaker

Post by scotlandog » February 6th, 2019, 10:50 pm

Say we beat Nevada at home and both teams end 16-2, what is the tie breaker. They would have lost to NM who we would have swept. We would have a loss to Fresno who they will have swept. Does their sweep of Fresno trump our sweep of NM? Is there a scenario we win the 1 seed in the conf tourney if there is a tie?

It is interesting since this is a very real possibility of happening.

Someone said earlier that they would be in first because Nevada had a sweep I’ve the higher rates team.

I would prefer not to play Fresno again in a #2-#3 game. Winning the #1 seed would be much easier. I know we’ve led them 75/80 minutes in our 2 games but the 2 teams are too closely matched apparently to feel comfortable.

The first tie-breaker is head-to-head. The second are the results against the 3rd place team. The next are the results against the 4th place team — and so on. If after all that there is still a tie, the team with the highest RPI receives the higher seeding. I do not know if the MWC has opted now for NET instead of RPI.

The least of our worries right now is how a tie would be broken with Nevada. We lose on every count. Our more important job is to stay ahead of Fresno, not because there is much of a difference between being the #2 or #3 seed in the conference tourney but simply to keep our credentials for an at-large NCAA berth intact.

The way to beat Fresno St. is to quit allowing Huggins career games against us.

The tie breaker is records against other teams starting with the highest ranked in conference. So unless Nevada loses to Fresno at home, and us (and obviously we would need to lose 1 more game too, or else we'd finish with a better record than them outright) then they will hold the tie break. This assuming Fresno finishes 3rd
