Still in good shape for 2nd or 3rd!

Post by Aggie84025 » February 9th, 2019, 10:22 pm

We are s till tied for 2nd place in the conference. Fresno still has to play at SDSU, Nevada and New Mexico. They probably lose 2 of those. SDSU still has to play Nevada twice and UNLV, might lost 2 of those. Assuming we lose to Nevada and only drop one other game, we will be no worse than 3rd. Considering preseason expectations that is still really good.

I think we’ll learn a lot from this loss. Winning streaks can become a burden. We have a much better chance of beating Nevada now because we’ll address some glaring weaknesses uncovered by the game tonight.

Anything in the top half of the league is a major improvement.

Now there is no room for error except perhaps a loss to Nevada. Any other loss and we’re playing for an NIT bid not an NCAA bid.

While I would love to see us playing in THE tourney, even one of the “first round” play-ins, I just don’t see it happening this year. Even if we only get one more conference loss, Nevada, we still would have to win out in the MWC tourney. If we don’t win out in the confrence tourney then we are hoping the committee looks favorably on an 8 loss MWC team... I just don’t see it happening.
The one thing we have on our side, is if they strictly stick to the new Net Rankings. With two additional losses at the end of the season, UNR and conf tourney, we may still be plus 40 in the net rankings.
I’ll keep my fingers crossed though.

Feeling good about the rest of the schedule, except for Nevada.

Only way USU goes to tourney is beat Nevada at home, and beat everyone else up to MW conference championship game vs Nevada. Only then can I see a possible at large bid. Other than that gotta win tournament. I do see a NIT bid strongly. For USU a 20+ win season plus NIT is a great start for Craig Smith era. Keeping realistic expectations here.

@ Boise will not be easy, I’ll be surprised if we don’t drop another besides the Nevada home game. I do think second place is very plausible, even with 2 more losses in conference play.

Yeah we have to beat everyone besides Nevada and also beat Nevada either in the regular season or in the MW tournament (obviously) to get in. I don't see the ncaa tourney in the cards this year. The conference being so bad just makes it so much tougher since quality wins are hard to come by and losses hurt so much more.

Any tournament would just be icing on the cake for me. I didn't expect much this year. The fact that we are talking about a possible tourney inclusion blows me away.
