Athletic Facilities Master Plan

Post by ProvoAggie » February 27th, 2019, 9:19 pm

I haven't seen this posted on here but it looks like it's been public for a few months now. It shows lot's of future developments. A few things to note:

Keep that roof low!

And 9k seems perfect, 3000 student tickets, 6000 paid seats, create demand. Sound good.

Honestly if they were to build a new arena I like this spot the best. Pretty cool concept drawing as well.Image

With dwindling attendance numbers nation wide I think new stadium builds will follow the model of university of Houston and seat less rather than more. I think there new stadium capacity is close to 7k.

So if we renovated the Spectrum, it will seat 11,500, but if we build a new one it will be 9,000? Seems odd. Especially considering that in past years we have had an average home attendance around 9,000 (that includes the Gossner, which drags down the average). Just seems odd to decrease an arena that isn't that big to begin with.

Some data points for folks to take a look at:

Season - Avg. Attendance
2018-19 - 6737
2017-18 - 6944
2016-17 - 6872
2015-16 - 8874
2014-15 - 9158
2013-14 - 9829
2012-13 - 7937
2011-12 - 8406
2010-11 - 8732
2009-10 - 9792
2008-09 - 8798
2007-08 - 9086
2006-07 - 8438
2005-06 - 8487
2004-05 - 8222
2003-04 - 8465
2002-03 - 7957
2001-02 - 7081
2000-01 - 8016

That's as far back as I could find. I'd be very interested to see what Stew's first two seasons looked like. Curious if it took him a little while to get attendance numbers up, too. I really think there is a lag effect between success and attendance.

The Spectrum has averaged 7,000 to 9,000 every year since it was built, except for a couple above 9,000. I think the highest might have been the first year.

The only time attendance has every dropped markedly was Duryea’s second year, which isn’t really a surprise. I think it could bounce right back to the long-term average next year.

That's my hope (for basketball and football, actually). But I'd still love to see the attendance for 99-00 and 98-99 if anyone can find those numbers.

Thanks! It looks like attendance was on the lower (for us) end during Stew's first two years. It took a good step up the season after they had the breakout '99-'00 season.

The concept I had heard was location #4 for the new basketball arena and doing it in conjunction with an east side remodel of the stadium and connecting the two structures somehow through a common entrance or plaza or something like that.

Imho, leave the Spectrum as is except paint the seats and widen the concourse. It is a great home court advantage. I think the money would be better used to get the football seating to at least 30k.

Moving the student section away from the court would be a huge mistake:

We come a lot closer to filling the Spectrum than Maverik Stadium.

Those upgrades in the spectrum look pretty good to me. Cohesive student section behind the hoop with benches. Wider seats in the rest of the arena (I didn't see distance between rows (i.e. legroom) addressed). I don't love having the press take the baseline opposite the student section though.

True, but I think you need more seats to bring better teams in. Also, BYU and Boise could fill a 30k.

The basketball stadium is the big one. The football stadium doesn't need major construction, just some additions.

Lots of things to like in this master plan. I wish the time frame was more like 5 years instead of 30 though.

Attendance averages are in the media guide, page nine, available on UtahStateAggies.com: https://s3.amazonaws.com/utahstateaggie ... de_Web.pdf

Just four seasons over 9,000 average since 1971

If we all pool our resources, I am sure we could come up with enough money to make it happen within five years. I'll chip in the first $20! :)

I certainly do not see the need to expand the Spectrum beyond its current size. But I do think 9,000 will be a bit short for those few times every year or two where we can get 10,000 or a bit more. The trend in college sports is contraction of existing arenas, not expansion. Cache County has nearly 3 times the population as it did in 1970, and USU is nearly twice the size it was in 1970. Yet the 1970-71 team had a higher attendance average than the 2011-12 team which had a 37 game home winning streak at one point in the season. IMHO a new arena, or Spectrum renovation, should have 9,000 to 9,500 regular seats, with another 1,000 to 1,500 retractable, or temporary seats which can be utilized for games like we had against Nevada last night, or when BYU or another in-state teams comes to Logan.

Don't touch the Spectrum. Do not move the seating back even one inch. After Saturday night I don't think anyone can convince me otherwise.

No need to add seating to Maverik any time soon since we're not near selling out the 25k seats as is. The 1 "must do" for Maverik for me is to widen the east side walkway between the two levels. No idea how though. Adding restrooms to the northeast if they can figure that out and maybe add more restrooms/concessions at the top of the east side would be nice to haves. Getting around on the east side is a cluster during halftime. Though, I will say I went to the Rose Bowl this year and while an awesome event and experience, the halftime concession and bathroom situation might be worse than Maverik.

*edit* after further review of the Maverik proposals, it seems that Phase 1 takes care of my priorities while also getting the stadium to 30k seats. I don't think we NEED 30k seats, but if that's what it takes to get the cluster of the east side fixed then that's fine with me.

I don't know, Gary got the fans to show up. This season is going to be very telling on ticket sales.

Year - Attendance avg.
2009 - 15971
2010 - 17878
2011 - 17469
2012 - 20054
2013 - 23263

Even with Gary it took awhile for attendance numbers to crawl up. I think, though, that with us following an 11-win season, and then the general excitement over the return of Gary, that we just might get to see some pretty good numbers this year. The schedule helps a lot, too. I think we just might approach, and possibly surpass, that high-water mark of 2013.

With 18,717 average attendance last year I think 20,000 is a good number to shoot for. I don’t know what year the way they counted attendance changed, but an average of 20,000 next season would be more people in the stadium than 2012.

Yes there are better teams on the schedule, but three November games will hurt the numbers. Also, BYU fans have been a lot less likely to travel to Logan since they went Independent.
