Another transfer from Utah??
I heard we may be getting another transfer from Utah. A defensive player. Hope it comes to fruition.

It is Heninger. I almost have to think he's maybe coming to USU as a walk-on.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
Re: Another transfer from Utah??
All these transfers from Utah coming in, I have to admit I’m a little worried that Gary is under the mind set that the program is in the same place it was when he left: Utah transfer > potential recruit. I hate to say it but I think USU has the potential to use scholarships on better recruits than washed up Utah players that will never see the playing field at Utah. I hope Gary proves me wrong.

Re: Another transfer from Utah??
Which washed up players are you referring to? Mariner was a starter at Utah, Repp may be but it's only for 1 yr, and if it's true about Heiniger, he's played on the D-line as a Fr. And So. That's pretty good considering Utah's depth there. I'll wait and see with him.captain68 wrote: ↑March 1st, 2019, 6:55 amAll these transfers from Utah coming in, I have to admit I’m a little worried that Gary is under the mind set that the program is in the same place it was when he left: Utah transfer > potential recruit. Just like Coach Smith and his Summit League recruits?captain68 wrote:All these transfers from Utah coming in, I have to admit I’m a little worried that Gary is under the mind set that the program is in the same place it was when he left: Utah transfer > potential recruit. Let's see what happens on the field before we start to worry the sky is falling.
Maybe Coach A knows these players can provide talent we need.

Re: Another transfer from Utah??
Honestly, the Coach Smith and his Summit League recruits thing doesn't hold any water. What have his Summit League recruits done? Neemias Queta: Coach Smith and Coach Peterson weren't even recruiting him until AFTER they got the job at Utah State. Ben Fakira: never gets off the bench. Tauriawn Knight: never gets off the bench. John Knight III: Barely made it a semester. Don't get me wrong Coach Smith and the boys have done and incredible job this year BUT they have done an incredible job with the players that were already here with the huge addition of Neemias.usufan1 wrote: ↑March 1st, 2019, 7:15 amJust like Coach Smith and his Summit League recruits?captain68 wrote:All these transfers from Utah coming in, I have to admit I’m a little worried that Gary is under the mind set that the program is in the same place it was when he left: Utah transfer > potential recruit. If the Heninger kid wants to walk-on here great, whatever. Unless someone is leaving I don't even see how we have room for him. But I really hope we aren't going to give him a scholarship.

Re: Another transfer from Utah??
What are the rules regarding contacting players from other programs? There is an obvious connection between coach and Utah, I'm just hoping he's not doing anything against the rules.

Not sure why he would leave a scholarship at Utah to walk-on at Utah St...unless Utah pushed him out

Was he awarded a scholarship at Utah? I thought he was a walk-on there. If we have a scholarship available, I'd use it on the WR position, particularly, that USC grad transfer WR or Nathan's buddy we passed on (that's really the only position group I have any concerns with). We are loaded across the board on D.

I don't watch Utah football, so I have no clue who is, or how good he is.....BUT Gary coached the D Line at Utah. Gary is very qualified to evaluate this kid, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt here.

Yes, he was on scholarship at Utah. And I don't mean anything about comparing the 2 schools, more that I don't see why anyone would give up a scholarship to walk-on somewhere else.

Re: Another transfer from Utah??
I agree with that, but giving a scholarship to a former Utah walk-on who had two tackles last season (even if he was awarded a scholarship) doesn't really move the needle. It almost seems that Gary thinks the talent disparity is such that guys that barely saw the field at Utah could be key contributors here. Like others have said, that's likely not true. I think we can do better in our recruiting given where the program is now versus where it was when Gary left.UtesAggs>BYU wrote: ↑March 1st, 2019, 9:32 amYes, he was on scholarship at Utah. That being said, I hope if he comes here he shuts us all up and proves us wrong.
(CAVEAT: I don't put Mariner in that category since he was a starter at Utah)

Re: Another transfer from Utah??
Playing time, maybe? We don't know what USU's DL's rotation will look like, but maybe it will go deep enough at USU to get the kid more playing time than at the ewe.UtesAggs>BYU wrote: ↑March 1st, 2019, 9:32 amYes, he was on scholarship at Utah. Re: Another transfer from Utah??
Gary is excellent at developing players and putting them in positions to make the most of their strengths to help the team. Gary has taken players no one thought much of and helped them become all-conference players.

Re: Another transfer from Utah??
I think the program was in pretty good shape when Gary left. Gary's last team at USU was probably one of the best all time Aggie teams. Your statement " I think we can do better in our recruiting given where the program is now versus where it was when Gary left. " is strange unless you mean the better facilities and conference. Player wise, I think his last team was very talented.ineptimusprime wrote: ↑March 1st, 2019, 9:35 amI agree with that, but giving a scholarship to a former Utah walk-on who had two tackles last season (even if he was awarded a scholarship) doesn't really move the needle. Re: Another transfer from Utah??
Maybe the kid just liked Gary as his coach and wanted to continue that relationship. Maybe Gary sees something special. Maybe the guy broke up with a chick and wants to leave SL,UT to start over.
Either way, I hope he thrives and does well.

Re: Another transfer from Utah??
Looking through his player bio, it appears like he’s a very strong student and could possibly qualify for academic scholarships if there aren’t athletic scholarships available.Imakeitrain wrote: ↑March 1st, 2019, 7:08 pmMaybe the kid just liked Gary as his coach and wanted to continue that relationship.
