Sam vs Caleb. Full 40 minutes. The game within the game.

Post by BeNo » March 3rd, 2019, 12:32 am

They both played hard against each other on both sides of the court. Intense. Fun to watch.

The capstone of it all was the charge drawn by Sam when Caleb went sky high for the dunk. ESPN has the highlight on their page. Haven’t found a Twitter link yet to share.

Sam is the best guard we’ve possibly ever seen in Aggie blue.

Lot of people feel the charge should have been a block.

Which part? Guys drawing charges or Harden ball?

Well said hipster. I really don’t know how you can argue Sam wasn’t in position.

Imagine not being rewarded for taking a charge this hard. How could you think the dunk post foul should have any effect on the call? Sounds like Bobby Reagan would prefer watch Slamball than Basketball.

Yet that’s exactly what almost every reply to the tweet is doing. They’re all arguing that Martin was already going up before Sam was set. I disagree. Sam looks pretty set to me before Martin ever leaves the ground. Plus Martin leads with his knee and drives it right into Sam. That’s a charge all day long, regardless of how cool the subsequent dunk is. Hats off to Sam for hanging in there, taking the contact, and helping ice the game away.

I'm glad that charge was called, and it was the charge that sat me back with a sigh of relief that we won the game. But that dunk was incredible by Caleb Martin. When I saw the replay the dude got up and dunked with some purpose. The head-to-head was a classic case of Martin being the more athletic player, and Merrill with more smarts and game situation savvy.

From a different angle you can see that Caleb was leading with his knee when he jumped and it hit Sam right in the chest, I wonder if that had something to do with it being called an offensive foul as well.

One of the greatest live dunks I've ever seen, thankfully Sam was in position and got the call. But that was incredible.

Side note, Martin kicking his leg out to shoot the ball should be called everytime, Sam either took or was centimeters away from taking a shin to the nuts on that "foul" at the end on the 3 point attempt.

The twins always do that sort of thing. Whenever they try a 3pointer the guy defending them has a good chance of getting kicked in the sac.

Those Martin twins sure are tricky. I was ticked when Queta posted up one of them and as the Martin twin was falling down he slyly grabbed Queta for a second and brought him down too.

After re-watching the game on TV, the announcers called that "getting tangled up."

Did anyone else hear the announcer last night say that Sam Merrill isn't a very good athlete?

Yeah i just heard that re-watching the game. That announcer is an idiot, he has the same 3-4 lines and often gets names/facts wrong.

Here is an interesting bit of info...

Out of the last 6 games. Sam has played 241 minutes! With the BSU overtime, there was only 245 total minutes to play.

And he has averaged 22 points per game.

I had to stop watching the game with about 5 min left to go to my son's musical. (darn kid's and their extra-curricular activities) When I watched the replay of Sam drawing the charge, my first thought was that is should be a no call. It was super close. The next time down, they called a fantom call on Sam on the 3-pointer, which I thought was kind of a make up call.

Thats essentially how I feel about it. I think it was a charge but 8/10 refs wouldnt call it. The foul on the 3 was doesnt show any contact but and again 8/10 refs wouldnt call that. It was a make up call and points wise it comes out even.

(I re-watched the game last night and there are several instances where Caroline comes within inches of kicking the defender in the ball on his 3 point attempts.]
