Sam Merrill accomplished a very rare stat last night

Post by Roy McAvoy » March 15th, 2019, 8:38 am

I'm not sure this has ever been done before in college basketball.

He had as many assists as he did shot attempts, while still scoring at least 23 points.

Pretty incredible.

I agree that it was an amazing stat. I love that he was so efficient and took such great care of the ball when most of his teammates were so rattled by the press.

That said, I suspect the stat is not as rare as you think. The first player I looked at to see if it had been done before was Trae Young. During his lone year at Oklahoma, he had a game of 22 AST, 26 PTS, and 16 FGA. The second player I looked at was Ja Morant. He had one game of 13 AST, 23 PTS, and 12 FGA, another game of 18 AST, 26 PTS, and 14 FGA, another game of 12 AST, 23 PTS, and 12 FGA. So he did it three times this season alone. I suspect if you look at other high assist, high scoring players, you will find it happens with some regularity.
