I will say that if rumors are true, UNLV is going to be throwing a lot of money at the next coach anywhere from $1.7-$2.8 million a year. That would be impressive to pull off, but I don't think Craig Smith leaves USU for UNLV. He could leave for another gig if the time or position is right. UNLV just doesn't seem like that place.

First I don't think Coach Smith would uproot his family in just over a year. Second Las Vegas just doesn't seem to fit the Smith family.

That would be the most shocking thing of this entire season and everything up until now has been impossible so I’m not worried about that at all. He may take another position but it’s not going to be in Las Vegas.

“While early speculation centered on proven head coaches like Matta and Rick Pitino, one source said Reed-Francois is also open to a younger, up-and-coming coach. Utah State won the Mountain West tournament on Saturday under first-year head coach Craig Smith, who was lured away from South Dakota with a 5-year, $3.5 million deal.”
Is this saying Craig Smith is a candidate, or just that they might make a move similar to Utah State’s last year, and hire an up-and-coming coach? The vibe I got is that they were using USU hiring Craig Smith as an example of a successful move that UNLV could potentially replicate more than listing him as a candidate for their job. I could be wrong though. Either way, I would be shocked if Smith would even consider leaving Logan for sin city.

I believe the author was using Coach Smith as an example of what a young, up and coming coach could do and the price would be lower. I don't think he was saying UNLV is going to go after Coach Smith.

Don't conferences and/or contracts have provisions discouraging poaching coaches from other teams in the same conference?

Unlv has already hired Matta. Give it awhile and this news will be released.

Craig Smith probably leaves eventually for a Big 10 job like Iowa or Minnesota. He ain't leaving for another MW job or anything other than a big time 3 million a year P5 job in the midwest. He'll be with us for many years to come. Not 17 like Stew, but we will be winning plenty more with this guy before he dominates the Big 10.
