Don't know how many read this article in the news section: https://www.deseretnews.com/article/900 ... state.html
Given that it was written by a D News sports guy, it strikes me as a hope that somehow BYU can finally get out of the WCC.

Re: Is this idea crazy or am I for thinking so
BYU fans and writers have always had delusions of grandeur, and have always sincerely believed that they have enough influence to just blow up any conference they want and create a “better” one with them in it.
When your team sucks, all you have is the past, and when that isn’t enough, you have wishful thinking.

Why would anyone besides BYU do that? Get Gonzaga to join the MWC and call it good.

No one reasonable would consider BYU a better basketball candidate than Saint Mary's for a new conference.

Yeah, that article was embarrassing. All the best teams are already in the MWC, with the exception of Gonzaga. Don't take teams from the Big West, they will all have their up and down years. Honestly, I think St. Mary's will go down hard when their coach retires.

BYU can remain in the WCC or join the WAC.

Delusional, satirical, or out of touch?
A different take is placing each revenue generating sport into the most competitive conferences you can get them into, and then forming separate conferences that minimize the geographic footprint for the non revenue sports.
Tennis, Soccer, Cross Country, Volleyball, Track, Gymnastics, Women’s Basketball, etc. would compete in a conference like:
Idaho State
Utah State
Weber State
Utah
Utah Valley
BYU
This could reduce travel costs and improve local interest and rivalry.
Football and Men’s Basketball would continue in the MW or something similar depending on conference alignment opportunities.

Creating a conference primarily focused on basketball is an eventual loser. The new basketball-only Big East is fading and will continue to fade over time. They just don't have the money to compete.

Re: Is this idea crazy or am I for thinking so
This sounds like a BYU fan from a church run paper trying to grasp at hope for the state of BYU basketball.
MWC schools may not even let half the conference leave for a goops only conference. And football drives everything.
A new confernce would not recieve an auto-bid right away (if I remember correctly). Being a good team requires wins. Even great conferences that have plenty of at large bids need bad teams to beat up on.

The article states there are only three competitive schools in the WCC. Gonzaga, Saint Mary's and who is the third?

Someone show this article to the BYU-P fans next time they say that the WCC is the better conference. 1 non BYU-P WCC team joins MW and 1 Big West team to form "super conference." Sounds like the MW is a short walk from being great at basketball.

Re: Is this idea crazy or am I for thinking so
We all know UCI > New Mexico. I “watched” both the away games this year and it was obvious by both production quality and fan attendance UCI is program that needs to be included. [/Sarcasm]
At least the author isn’t writing about USU anymore. He can pretend a team outside of Provo finds his fantasy appealing; but Gonzaga and the Mountain West teams would not eagerly accept an invitation to the BYU isn’t in love with the WCC league. Maybe they could have paid attention to what independence did to other programs before making their decision. I like the direction BYU sports are heading, and maybe they could go independent in basketball as well for a few years to get this new dream conference started.

Re: Re: Is this idea crazy or am I for thinking so
This is the eventual fall back of BYU every time things don't work out for them perfectly. Lets blow up the nearby conferences, crown ourselves the leaders, and start something new. Then give it 5 to 10 years when they aren't the "best" in the conference and repeat the process all over again.

Re: Is this idea crazy or am I for thinking so
I agree somewhat with his argument, but as has been mentioned, why not just add BYU, Gonzaga, and NMSU olympic sports with a football scheduling agreement? 15 total members, 13 football schools and 14 for olympic sports. This would be a 3-5 bid basketball league. It also prepares the conference for future conference expansion losses.
Colorado State
Wyoming
Air Force
New Mexico
New Mexico State (football scheduling agreement)
Utah State
BYU
Boise State
Gonzaga
UNLV
Nevada
Fresno State
San Diego State
San Jose State
Hawaii (football only)

For a minute I thought I was reading the sports page in "The Onion".
Having lived away from Utah for almost 25 years I tend to forget the narcissism overflowing out of Provo. Articles such as this are a gentle reminder.

Re: Re: Is this idea crazy or am I for thinking so
These articles are dumb, and designed to get clicks. Seems to work too....
The MWC isn't looking to expand and I don't think that BYU is looking to join the MWC.
Only school I've heard about was the MWC asking Gonzaga to join, and Gonzaga said no and stayed in the WCC.
I do agree that the MWC needs to dump San Jose and add New Mexico State.

Truth. Yes, it's pretty well accepted that they automatically start the season in 3rd place but on the flip side they really have to be a special kind of awful to finish anywhere below 3rd in that conference. I can't see them giving up that hollow "top 3" label for what would be a middle of the pack finish most years.

Re: Is this idea crazy or am I for thinking so
This article is crazy talk. As if teams could just walk away from their conferences with impunity. How about this question? How is it that the MWC would allow 6 of its schools to take their basketball teams to a new conference and yet presumably stay in the MWC for football and the other Olympic sports? You can’t have your cake and eat it too.
If ultimately Gonzaga leaves the WCC to join the MWC, great. If BYU comes along too, I’m OK with that. But to heck with linking ourselves to BYU ever again. That always spells disaster.

Re: Is this idea crazy or am I for thinking so
Zoobies always assume they can just snap their fingers and make a "best of the rest" conference with whoever they choose (almost always excluding USU) and that everyone would just jump at the opportunity. They are delusional and seriously inflate their own value.

Let's be real. If we were in the same conference with BYU regardless what conference it would be awesome. The whole rivalry would have even more meaning than before. I would love to replace San Jose State (they do nothing for the conference) with BYU (actual good sports and viewership).

My deep and well documented distrust of anything BYU blocks any consideration of such an arrangement. I believe Doug Robinson didn't just conjure this article out of the blue, and that he had to hear something from the folks in Provostan. Let them struggle in the mess they created.

I read this and regret doing so. I should have immediately stopped when I saw "Related Link: Doug Robinson: BYU needs to break away from the status quo. Here's how the Cougars can start".
Just the title of the article annoys me. As if, like always, we're graced by being in the presence of the zoobies. Give me a break.
