Sam headed for the draft....
Sam headed for the draft....
I just got some insider info on Sam declaring for the draft.....
The lastest rumor is that Sam is declaring for the draft, but of course will have the option to come back. My source comes through his wife, but time will tell.

Re: Sam headed for the draft....
Was this expected? Did he have to declare in order to work out at the combine and get some exposure....Or, does this mean he will try to go Summer League and be a free agent so he could be gone for next year?!

Re: Sam headed for the draft....
Of course he is. This is exactly what he should do. Jaycee Carroll did the same thing. It’s a chance to see where he stands, get his name out there, and get feedback from scouts.
It would be dumb not to. If/once he’s told he likely wouldn’t get drafted he can come back to school.

Sam and Queta should both declare, go work with scouts, learn what they can improve on, and come back and work on it.

Re: Sam headed for the draft....
I think we expected that he and possibly Queta would put their names in, not hire an agent, and then both return. I think it's good for both of them to get the exposure and experience but I don't think either are in any position to be in high demand in this year's draft.

Re: Sam headed for the draft....
Kentucky usually has their whole team declare for the draft then most of them decide to come back.

I think Queta will be the only one we should be concerned about....didn't realize his draft stock. Sports Illustrated seems to think he could go 1st Round!!

All true except for the "most of them decide to come back" part.GameFAQSAggie wrote: ↑April 11th, 2019, 11:08 amKentucky usually has their whole team declare for the draft then most of them decide to come back.

Well, I guess it's not true that most of the starters don't come back. But they do have the bench players come back.ChicAggie wrote: ↑April 11th, 2019, 12:52 pmAll true except for the "most of them decide to come back" part.GameFAQSAggie wrote: ↑April 11th, 2019, 11:08 amKentucky usually has their whole team declare for the draft then most of them decide to come back.

Re: Sam headed for the draft....
With the way the rules have changed, there’s virtually no downside to declaring.
I suspect that neither Sam nor Queta will get invited to the Combine (maybe Queta?) nor get the feedback they’d like to hear, but it won’t hurt them at all to get some feedback from NBA teams at individual workouts.
Sam is an incredible college player, but I don’t think his game will translate to the NBA (Sam was completely shut down against the two elite athletic teams we played, Houston and Washington) I think Queta has an NBA future, but it isn’t his time yet.

SI is full of crap, no way is he a first rounder, his physical stature. Ed’s to be built up. A big like Cousins would flip him thru a wall. His game also needs refinement. He would be smart to stay as with another year or 2 he could be a lotto pick.

To be fair, Cousins can flip pretty much anyone through a wall.Jjoey53 wrote:ThunderAggie wrote:I think Queta will be the only one we should be concerned about....didn't realize his draft stock. Sports Illustrated seems to think he could go 1st Round!!

Sam headed for the draft....
True, but I thought Queta wore down early vs UW.elcheque2 wrote:To be fair, Cousins can flip pretty much anyone through a wall.Jjoey53 wrote:ThunderAggie wrote:I think Queta will be the only one we should be concerned about....didn't realize his draft stock. 1,568. if he repeats his scoring from this season, he will be 2nd behind JC. He probably can't catch JC.

Re: Sam headed for the draft....
Also if he keeps the same assist rate (4.1 apg) he will likely finish 2nd in career assists (currently 350, 350 + 4.1*35 = 493)QuackAttackAggie wrote: ↑April 12th, 2019, 1:35 am1,568. if he repeats his scoring from this season, he will be 2nd behind JC. He probably can't catch JC.
The current top 3 is:
Oscar Williams: 562
Kevin Nixon: 428
Tony Brown: 396
Same could jump into the top 5 for steals. Currently 101, last season it was 1.1 spg, Projected = 140
Top 5 is:
Greg Grant: 226
Jay Goodman: 205
Kevin Nixon: 190
Kendall Youngblood: 164
Tony Brown: 146
Also for 3 pointers made he can jump to 2nd pretty easily:
Sam (current): 230
Sam (projected): 318
Jaycee: 369
2nd - Tony Brown: 283
Sam is currently 1st in career FG% - Might stay there
Total minutes played in is play for Sam but feels like a long shot (going farther in the NCAA tournament would help):
Current: 3240
Projected (35.3 mpg): 4476
Potential (40mpg): 4640
1st - Jaycee: 4597
Also Queta is likely to take 1st in blocks. He has 84, 1st place is 155 (Gilbert Pete)
Re: Sam headed for the draft....
And, Sports Consecrated says in your cited reference it would be a good idea for Queta to take a second year at USU. This is a reach, at best, by draft wonks trying to churn up some grist, get clicks..ThunderAggie wrote: ↑April 11th, 2019, 11:11 amI think Queta will be the only one we should be concerned about....didn't realize his draft stock. Re: Sam headed for the draft....
I don’t see Sam on any lists of those that have declared or those expected to. The news that he is declaring was also news to his grandfather when a friend of mine bumped into him last weekend...
Has to declare by Sunday, right?

I hope Queta decides to come back. It will be very difficult to duplicate or exceed last year without him.

Sams my all time favorite, hands down. He is special. Cannot wait to watch him next year.
