Hoops Spring Signing Period Begins Today
Here is a link to our current spring signing period players. As of now Sean Bairstow has already signed and will be announced later today.
https://247sports.com/college/utah-stat ... 131271896/
Also here is a link to our future rosters. Obviously, this could still change with Queta possibly still remaining in the NBA Draft but this is how it stands for now.

Re: Hoops Spring Signing Period Begins Today
We need one of our incoming freshmen to be a future star. Hopefully McChesney and Bairstow will come in and develop quickly. I really like this signing class so far.
aggie22 do you foresee any other signings today or is it more expected that the rest of the signings will filter in later?

Re: Hoops Spring Signing Period Begins Today
I've been told that McChesney will be the second best shooter on the team the moment he steps onto campus. Bairstow will likely play early as well. The staff is very excited about him!nswaggie wrote: ↑April 17th, 2019, 7:17 amWe need one of our incoming freshmen to be a future star. Here's a McChesney story. When he came on his official visit it was over the weekend of one of our home football games. When it came time for McChesney and his parents to head down to the stadium for the game. McChesney told them he was fine and stayed behind and shot jumpers at the Estes Center while his parents attended the football game. Once the game ended, McChesney's parents returned to the Estes Center and found Liam still raising jumpers!
I would be shocked if we announced another signing today. I don't foresee it because there are still too many dominoes that need to fall.

Re: Hoops Spring Signing Period Begins Today
Another component of why we won't see someone today is that there are a lot of grad transfers that are aiming high. Once those top spots are filled up then we'll likely see more interest from other players that were trying to go to a top p5 school and be able to land someone.
Re: Hoops Spring Signing Period Begins Today
Cool story, thanks for sharing. I figured we wouldn’t be expecting any further signings today. What would be your guess on the timeline for dominos to fall? Obviously the Draft is big domino but how long does this signing period last? Does it go all through the summer? I know we got Quetta really late but when did he actually sign? Will potential P5 recruits be falling to us after other P5 player pull out of the draft or go undrafted and go back to their schools and take back their scholarship?aggies22 wrote: ↑April 17th, 2019, 7:41 amI've been told that McChesney will be the second best shooter on the team the moment he steps onto campus. For example if the Utah transfer really is considering Utah State can he wait it out and see what happens with Quetta before he makes a decision without any repercussions?
I’m lazy feel free to tell me to google it.

Looks like someone at 247 finally took the time to evaluate Bairstow. Mcchesney and Bairstow now represent our 1st and 5th highest rated recruits ever.

It also looks like Alphonso Anderson is being re-evaluated and will be re-ranked. Expect this number to rise!Madmartigan wrote: ↑April 17th, 2019, 10:36 am#1 ranked recruiting class in the MW per 247 thus far.

'22, question for you: The 6'4 guard out of Ridgeline. It's obvious he can score. Can he play the point, or is he another perimeter guy that lacks slashing/dishing skills?
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

The Bairstow and McChesney lineup at the forward spots should have aggie fans very excited. Long, good athletes who can shoot.

It will be fun to see the competition. If we land a guy like Toolson to pair with Merrill that gives these kids a chance to get their feet under them. Miller would benefit from some competition to push him into performing consistently. He did some good things at times for a freshman.elcheque2 wrote:I was pretty darn excited just watching his tape. Watching more Bairstow highlights, two things that jumped out to me. There was a lot of dunks, and it is oddly similar to Queta in that he could completely overwhelmed college basketball with his unique build and speed and attack the rim and willingness to pass the ball.

Re: Hoops Spring Signing Period Begins Today
Landon Brenchley was one of the lone bright spots on a Ridgeline team that had a tough year. Yes, he can shoot but he is capable of distributing the ball. He was a do-it-all player the last two seasons. He'll likely be a shooting guard at USU.

Some stuff that caught my eye.
Bairstow, a 6-foot-8, 185-pound guard, averaged 22 points and 10 rebounds per game at Churchie. More notably, Bairstow was a member of the U19 Australian National Team and a two-year member of the U20 Queensland team.

1 Porter
2 Merrill

Re: Hoops Spring Signing Period Begins Today
Are they both going to be that big of immediate impacts. How likely is it that they pass Miller, Brito, and Bean for starting positions?
What is more likely...McChesney starting over Bean and any other Forwards or Bairstow passing Brito, Miller, and any potential transfers. I would have to think McChesney...

Re: Hoops Spring Signing Period Begins Today
Until I see Bairstow and McChesney play in an Aggie uniform, my expectations for them are not that high. You have to remember that both have not been playing against the highest of competition. Bairstow at least has some national team experience but this will be a big step up for both of them.
McChesney looks to be a good spot up shooter but he plays much smaller than his 6'-9" and he's not very athletic. I will be interested to see if he can play defense, especially against another stretch 4 that has athleticism. I'm a bit more optimistic about the readiness of Bairstow because he appears to be a little more athletic and plays above the rim.

Re: Hoops Spring Signing Period Begins Today
I agree. I think that we will still have the standouts (Merrill, possibly Queta), but behind them, we will be pretty even and deep. Unless we get a grad transfer like Toolson or a very good transfer PG, I see everyone being fairly equal and competitive. I think McChesney and Bairstow will see the court quite a bit, but I don't see either of them having breakout freshman years to be top 2 or 3 in scoring like Queta this last year. I think Miller, Brito, and Bean will be good role players and McChesney and Bairstow could both be good sixth men. I think Bean will have a big year though! Now, give the new guys a few years and I can see Bairstow and McChesney being pretty good players. I think Bairstow has a higher ceiling because of his athleticism, but we will have to see. I think they both need to be more exposed to American D1 players, but can't wait for next basketball season. No matter if Queta is here or not, we should still have a good team that can compete for a conference title again!Aglicious wrote: ↑April 17th, 2019, 4:41 pmUntil I see Bairstow and McChesney play in an Aggie uniform, my expectations for them are not that high. Re: Hoops Spring Signing Period Begins Today
I intentionally left out the word “starting” I was trying to infer a lineup that could happen during the course of a game not a starting lineup. I do think at least one of the two will have immediate impact as an important piece off the bench. I noticed last year that Smith doesn’t seem to like tinkering with his starting lineup. Look how long he kept Ainge as the starter. I think we only had two different starting lineups all year.ThunderAggie wrote: ↑April 17th, 2019, 4:31 pmAre they both going to be that big of immediate impacts. Re: Hoops Spring Signing Period Begins Today
Yeah, that is true. I think Coach Smith likes to stay loyal to players and unless they continue to prove they don't deserve a spot, then will they lose it. I agree that Ainge was starter for way too long, but I guess we didn't know Abel was capable of handling the PG position early on last season.nswaggie wrote: ↑April 17th, 2019, 5:09 pmI intentionally left out the word “starting” I was trying to infer a lineup that could happen during the course of a game not a starting lineup. You never know. We had a kid from Anaconda Montana who played HS against weak competition..I think his name was Estes. Another one who played on a small non descript Juco in Wyoming...Carroll I think was his name.Aglicious wrote: ↑April 17th, 2019, 4:41 pmUntil I see Bairstow and McChesney play in an Aggie uniform, my expectations for them are not that high. Re: Hoops Spring Signing Period Begins Today
I believe Quayle played Juco in Wyoming while Carroll only played HS ball there, but point taken.
Re: Hoops Spring Signing Period Begins Today
Regardless of the level McChesney played at in Canada, I think he would've been the 2nd best PF in Utah HS basketball this past season at any level, behind only Isaac Johnson from American Fork who committed to Oregon, but ahead of Bernardo Da Silva from Wasatch Academy who committed to BYU. We haven't signed many 6'9" players with his skill set at USU. Like has been mentioned, he does need to put on some weight, but if he was 210 instead of 180, it seems like he could've easily gone higher.
Bairstow's highlight video speaks for itself and his other offers are impressive.
Both signings look solid.

Re: Hoops Spring Signing Period Begins Today
No. In the manner that I had it explained to me, college hoops is much different than college football. Unless the kid is a highly rated game-changing recruit, once a kid (such as Bairstow) commits to a school, the remaining schools that were in the process of recruiting him just move on to the next one. It's not like football where decisions come to down to signing day and hats on the table type ceremonies. There is much less drama (typically) surrounding choosing which college basketball program to play for.

Re: Hoops Spring Signing Period Begins Today
An interesting part of this discussion is that McChesney and Anderson both signed when the team was ‘expected ‘ to finish 9th. No one would have thought of a national ranking at that point.
Incredible to get this caliber of players based on ‘vision ‘.
Hope that vision combined with results can keep some momentum going.
