Re: Queta

Post by Rabidchild » May 9th, 2019, 12:17 am

I have a related question not yet discussed in this thread. I must have missed the news of a rules change in the last few years, but when did they begin allowing players to hire an agent but still elect to return to college? Does this mean that the agent can be in negotiations with teams prior to the draft and agree to contractual terms to know whether or not a team intends to sign him to a guaranteed contract if drafted? If a team drafts him and he chooses to go back to USU, does that team have the rights to him when he does eventually leave college? It seems any team considering him would want to know his intentions.

I'm a reasonable man, get off my case.

After last year’s FBI discovery of the scandal involving the recruitment of players, the NCAA passed the rule allowing underclassmen to secure an agent, be evaluated for the draft yet still retain their college eligibility under certain conditions.

See my post from some time ago for the answers to your other questions

https://usufans.com/Forums/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=49489

If any underclassman decides to keep their name in the draft after May 29, regardless if they are drafted or not, they forfeit their college eligibility. If Queta removes his name from the draft he is not eligible to be drafted. Period. As an underclassman there is no possibility of him withdrawing from the draft yet still be drafted by an NBA team.

Awww, come on Rabid, it's so simple! Maybe you need a refresher course.

It's all ball bearings nowadays. Now you prepare that Fetzer valve with some 3-in-1 oil and some gauze pads, and I'm gonna need 'bout ten quarts of anti-freeze. Preferably Prestone. No, no make that Quaker State.

I think it all hinges on how Queta does at the combine. If he does well and he’s getting good feedback that he’s a first round prospect, he’s gone. If he is told he’s a second round guy, I’m betting he pulls out of the draft and comes back next year.

I think he's gone. Let's assume for a minute Queta is in fact a 2nd rounder. I put myself in his shoes and ask myself if it makes more sense to return to USU for a year and have to deal with school, injury risk, smaller and more physical players trying to push me around in the paint, etc. Or if it's better to go to the G league, play against borderline NBA players, get coached and noticed by NBA coaches, and make $50k/year.

Based off what we know with Queta, the G league does seem like a better route with his goals and situation.

Unless something changes, I get the feeling he is not interested in being a second round pick. That would be good for us.

I really don't see Queta as a first round pick, but you never know. The Raptors took Bruno Caboclo in the 20th pick of the 2014 draft. Bruno, at the time, was famously said to be "three years away from being three years away." Queta probably matches that description.

He also loved his freshman year, loves his teammates, his experience at Utah State, etc. He’s already noticed by NBA coaches - he’s going to the combine. Visibility isn’t going to be an issue. And we have a chance to be even better next year and make a deeper run in the tournament. All those things are attractive too. That’s why I think he comes back if he doesn’t feel very confident he will go in the first round. I used to think he was gone regardless but I’ve changed my mind on that. I won’t be shocked if he stays in but I won’t be surprised if he comes back either.

Funny you should ask... Caboclo is still in the league, playing for the Grizzlies. This year, he played in 34 games, averaging about 8 and 5. It's a far cry from a good stat line, but - hell - if Queta is drafted in the first round and manages to produce numbers like these in year 5, it'd be a great success.

For whatever reason, I can't shake the feeling that Queta feels very Spursy at the 49th pick (which is obviously higher than currently projected). As always, I know nothing.

But that's okay because Caboclo is still one full season away from his projected breakout year. :)

Is Queta excluded from pre-draft workouts with the teams since he is invited to the combine? I haven't seen any news of him working out with any team like I have seen with the Jazz.

I don't think teams can hold workouts until after the lottery.

Nope. Teams are already holding workouts. Jazz have had about 12 players in already.

That will help him with Utah State and hopefully his future.
Selfishly, I hope he's right. If Queta returns for one more year, the Ags could have a very special season. Should be very good anyway, but top 20 for the entire season with him.

Seems to me it’s just simply that Perrin probably has no real idea about Queta’s situation. He just thinks Queta needs to more time in school and was just making that assumption because based off what he saw it’s what Queta needs.

What do you mean by “Queta’s situation”? Is any different than any other player that has declared for the draft? Surely he knows Queta’s been invited to the Combine. But other than that, how is his situation different than any other early player? Just curious what you mean.

Perrin said Queta got pushed around a bit today. That doesn’t shock me too much. He was up against a big Australian kid and #FreeSilvio from KU. Silvio De Sousa is a beast.

I selfishly hope he keeps getting feedback like he got today so we get one more year of him.

I think that is an honest assessment. He would get crushed by a lot of the NBA bigs. Feed him lots of Aggie Ice cream, hit the weight room, and improve his offensive gam and he could be a lottery pick next year.

Agreed, I'd say it's spot on. Queta only gets drafted if an NBA team sees potential and believe they can develop his game over the next 2 years.

Queta is nowhere to be found in ESPN’s top 100 draft prospects.

I believe he'll be back. Not a very promising statement by Walt, especially when he says "...so hopefully that will help him at Utah State and in the future." They aren't going to show their cards, but they are sounding like he's an eval and return to sender. Which is wonderful for us, to have have depth at the 5 spot. Can't wait.

That would only be about 4.2 bytes/second and I know internet in Logan is bad but I think we can get him better internet than that.
