What will the student section be like next year?

Post by USUaggienation » May 12th, 2019, 1:34 am

Sorry to interrupt the speculation of whether Queta will return or not (Queta is always welcome to return but do what's best for you, young man), but what I'm very curious to see is what the student section will look like.

We can't control Queta's decision, but I do believe we (I guess I'm referring to the athletic department) at least have some influence over the student section returning in force. I hope I don't need to do too much convincing about the value of an emphatic student section in college basketball.

The student section for the Nevada game was off the charts, as good as atmosphere during the glory years. The student section for the SDSU game just before that was excellent, but not quite as electric and not quite sold out. I want to believe that the student section for the SDSU game will be the standard expectation for the students going forward.

But on the other hand, despite our history, we currently only have a track record of two games of consistently meeting that expectation. Will the memories of our late/postseason success still be fresh in the minds of the students? Will we be able to pick up where we left off? Will we need to start over again, as far as rebuilding the student section?

I just want to hear everyone's opinion or speculation on this matter.

If we hit the rankings early it will definitely help. We need Queta to do that.

If the football team is hot in November, the student section for basketball won't be as big. If the football team struggles, people will look to basketball for relief. With that in mind, I expect the student section in basketball to struggle through December. I expect the student section to be back to full strength for conference play assuming that we perform at a high level through non-conference.

The student section will be moderately better, but anyone expecting the same atmosphere as the SDSU and Nevada games at the end of the season will be very disappointed. I’m sure it will be better overall with one or two games that are REALLY good

I predict it will be significantly better than this year. Winning the SDSU and Nevada games shouldn’t be underestimated in reigniting the fire. We will be predicted to be in the championship hunt instead of 9th place. It won’t be like Stew’s best years but it will be better than it has been.....

Mostly sparse at the beginning. Then the break will hit and it will be empty during any Christmas break games. We will probably have 1 MW game at home with no students. Then as in years past, when the students get back in January it will improve with each game. pretty much like most seasons the past 35 years.

Pretty sure the student center will be A LOT better next season IF they can recruit another PG-type. That's what they really need.

It all comes down to starting off hot like we did last year, but beating the zoobs. If we can do that, the average student will see the team as a quality team that worth watching.

Not that byu looks to be really good this year, but I truly believe that losing to them last year killed a lot of momentum we had going before. If we beat them in Vivint, the students will take pride in their team and show up after winter break.

That's just my two cents.

Agreed. If the students have a PG for which to cheer, then they will come, let there be no doubt.

Aggies really, really, really need to get over BYU. They are of no importance to our athletics. I get that people hate them. I’m on the leaderboard in that regard but we are past them. They just don’t mean that much anymore. We should act like it.

Let me clarify my post. Beating byu this year isn’t important because “we hate them” or we need to prove that we’ve surpassed them. We proved last year with our championship that we are the superior program with a better future.

It’s the TIMING of when we play them that’s huge for student moral and perception of the team. Think about it. They’re the last team we play at the end of the fall semester. If we lose, the casual Usu student is going to go home for winter break thinking “We’ll, looks like our basketball team isn’t that good this year.” Even if they’re completely wrong, that’s what they tend to think. And their apathy will carry over when they get back. Which makes them less likely to come to games come conference play.

On the other hand, if we win, the average student comes back from winter break dying to see some more Aggie basketball.

Again, it’s the timing of the game, not necessarily the opponent.

Sorry Bluegrouse, but you state that BYU are of no importance to our athletics, but they are! We schedule them in every sport, we want to beat them in every sport, we get our best attendence in every sport. They are important! do we need to relate everything to them, NOOOOOO! but to say they don't matter is just be ignorant to the overall picture of our program. obviously my opinion. I don't want to make this thread about BYU because too many threads go that route, but just wanted to put my opinion out there.

I definitely think that our relationship with BYU has evolved. We are no longer the little brother that big brother picked on. Big Brother came back from his mission and found little brother wasn't so little anymore. To say that they don't matter seems more like us trying to convince ourselves. We are now just brothers. We compete for recruits, we play every year. To take the next step, we need to beat them consistently.

We (by which I mean our team) need to get over the BYU mental block. It seems like we were the better team last season, but they still beat us. I swear it is mental, and has been going all the way back at least to the year that BYU's only win was against USU.
