Re: 2019 Athletic Department Road Trip
So what's the deal with this road trip? Are they just trying to connect with Alumni? They are coming to Seattle and I am seriously considering going.

Re: 2019 Athletic Department Road Trip
It's a good chance for the Athletic department to go out and meet as many alumni/fans as they can, give them an update on the program and then ask for money. They're usually pretty fun events.NAggsty Butler wrote: ↑April 29th, 2019, 8:23 pmSo what's the deal with this road trip? Are they just trying to connect with Alumni? I'll be at the one in Portland; trying to get a few other Oregon Aggie alumni to come with me.

Re: 2019 Athletic Department Road Trip
Questions I would ask (I don't have one close enough to go to) starting tonight?
To John Hartwell: Is Coach Smith getting an extension?
To Coach Smith: 1. How are we recruiting for next year? What positions are we looking at? Have we had recruits on campus? Are we looking at HS, JC, Grads, or Transfers? Who is going to play Center next year? Who is on the schedule so far?
I have none for Gary, I think we already know most things.

My guess is that there is not a enough alumni there to justify it. You can offer to host at your house. Just lock up the booze

Re: 2019 Athletic Department Road Trip
I just got home from the Scottsdale road trip and I can confirm that re-establishing the alumni associations seem to be a big key. They have a new chapter President here in AZ and are planning local events. They also said they are planning on having alumni events at every away football game and some basketball events.WAAggie wrote:I’ll be at the seattle one. Trying to bring a younger alum with me. Re: 2019 Athletic Department Road Trip
I didn’t see your questions before so I didn’t ask any of those. Be on the look out for announcements about football kicktimes/tv games. Colorado State will be homecoming. Nothing else too substantial. Coach Smith couldn’t really talk much about recruiting besides kids that have already committed. He said the Aussie kid may eventually develop into a point guard but not this season. Said Nemi should absolutely stay in the draft if he can be a first rounder but thinks he should come back if he’s going to be a second rounder because he’ll have a chance to be a first rounder the following year. Coach A talked a lot about how much better USU is doing and how the program when he was here before wouldn’t have been able to recruit now a days just based on the academic support, facilities, etc that we offer now. Said he wants to give a P5 experience to the kids. Overall, it was a really fun night. Even my wife who isn’t a USU grad enjoyed it. The turnout was probably 3-4x what it was last year so hopefully they keep doing it and it keeps growing.bpd wrote:Any other details.... see questions above.

I suppose that the powers that be are privy to better data than I am, but I'm surprised that there isn't a stop in Colorado.
Seriously - we have Kneaders, we have Cafe Rio, we have multiple Maveriks... we have plenty of Utah-Speak-Easys to go around. I'm guessing that recruiting is too weak out here to justify a visit?

We have Cafe Rio in So-Cal, people here call it "Mormon Mexican Food" because of it's Utah roots. But I keep turning people onto it. We're still waiting for Maverik, I've been told they are about 5 years away from expanding into Ca's Market.918AGG wrote: ↑May 1st, 2019, 4:30 pmI suppose that the powers that be are privy to better data than I am, but I'm surprised that there isn't a stop in Colorado.

Cafe Rio is solid. It holds a place in the fast casual Mexican food niche that a lot of places can't compete with. Utah or not -- it's good Mexican(-ish) food.

Looking at some of the other locations, I'm also shocked there is not one in Colorado as well. I live in Fort Collins/Loveland and know some other alumni who would probably drive to Denver to go to it. We don't have a Kneaders up here though, which I am ok with. Where do you live?918AGG wrote: ↑May 1st, 2019, 4:30 pmI suppose that the powers that be are privy to better data than I am, but I'm surprised that there isn't a stop in Colorado.

2019 Athletic Department Road Trip
Interested to see how many show up in Seattle tonight.
Suck. Just was tweeted coach Smith won’t be there. Takes about 75% of my excitement away.
It will be Ragland instead.

Re: 2019 Athletic Department Road Trip
One measure mentioned tonight was the number of Aggies within a geographic area. 2,600 Aggie alums within a 50 mile radius of seattle.
Enjoyed the night. Summary tomorrow. BTW, Coach A told me the tattoo is still in place and laughed about it. Still has dog named Blue, sadly Aggie got ill and passed.

Oh, and coach smith gets a pass. He’s with Quetta in Chicago providing support and learning all he can about what he needs to be a first rounder NEXT year. Mentoring as much as he can and showing him that Usu has his back and would love to help him get bigger, stronger, faster after an awesome 2nd season as an Aggie.

1. Costa
2. Cafe Rio
3. Qdoba
4. Taco Time
5. Chipotle :D
And trombone_ninja, you should check out Cafe Mexicali (sadly I lived in Greeley for a couple years) it's basically a rip off of Cafe Rio.

Re: 2019 Athletic Department Road Trip
Considering that there were events in Las Vegas, Southern California and Meridian Idaho I doubt that proximity to other conference schools had anything to do with it.trombone_ninja wrote: ↑May 15th, 2019, 8:51 pmSeriously, why do none of these trips go to the other side of the Rockies? Re: 2019 Athletic Department Road Trip
Agree, there should be one in Denver. Now I am going to go off on food. First, Trombone, when are you going to move out of Greeley and move closer to I -25?. Fort Collins has a Cafe Rio.... it is not good, it is just ok. Even my wife who used to love Cafe Rio, thinks the Rio has gone downhill. Not just in Fort Collins, but everywhere. Cafe Mexicali puts everything to shame around these parts. The only problem is that it will give you a heart attack within minutes if you go with habenero creme sauce. The Rio is way down the list for me. Chipotle is overrated, but above the Rio.
Cool to hear Smith is with Queata. Ragland give any more insights?

Ragland did say the staff is “getting” used to coach smiths recruiting philosophy of not throwing offers out to see if one sticks. Coach wants a closer, detailed relationship both ways with players and families before handing out offers.

Re: 2019 Athletic Department Road Trip
The very fetching Mrs. LKGates and I attended the Portland road show. I'd guess about 15 - 20 in attendance. It was a great opportunity to interact one on one with the AD folks. No big surprises; nothing that hasn't been reported elsewhere on this thread. They mentioned that there are 1,500 alumni within 50 miles of Portland. They're resurrecting the alumni chapters, including one in Portland.
Andersen and Ragland did well, but Hartwell was the star of the show. He has a great grasp of the situation from top to bottom. He knows how many track and field athletes are going to the NCAA regionals, how many total student athletes graduated, our graduation rate and standing both in the state and the conference, he's very detail oriented. At the same time, he understands the larger forces working in college athletics, and he knows what needs to be done to advance our position. The guy really has a vision for USU athletics.
