BYU had some damned good players, Empey, Drage, Willis, Walsh....a bunch of them. And we had a bunch of your own, especially some guy named "Calvillo". :)

This might have been a ten-win team if Abu Wilson doesn't blow out his knee before the start of the season.

I think it was Drage that Younger almost killed after catching a pass over the middle.

Sadly I was near the top of the student section, so the goal posts were already down by the time I made it to the field.

We should have been a 10 win team anyway. We lost heart breaker to Baylor, last second TD. Utah dropped punt and we have them beat. Nevada in a shootout 44 to 41. LSU kicked our butt and I cannot remember who else we lost too that year. That was the first year we had lights at the stadium.

That was one of the first Aggie games I remember attending. I had a hat that they made for our inaugural game under the lights against Baylor that Charlie Weatherbie signed for me. We were 1-5 at the time I think and he wrote "See you in Vegas". I thought that sounded crazy but turned out he was right.

Fresno State beat us in Fresno - they had Trent Dilfer who was a pretty good college QB.

That year I went to Baylor game utah game. My dad said we are bad luck so we are not going to byu game. So had to watch the byu game in the provo mall while my parents shopped. Everyone was so mad at me as i jumped up and down. I also saw the Pacific game and vegas bowl. So fun. We had to travel 5 to 6 hours to watch the ags play in logan. Great year

Our five losses were all in a row.

at Utah L 31-29
Baylor L 28-24 (They scored the game winning TD with something like 12 seconds left)
at Fresno L 30-14
at LSU L 38-17
Nevada L 48-44

Both Baylor and Nevada scored their winning TD's with less than a minute left. Both had to convert a 4th and long on their final drive to keep it going; in fact, I think Baylor basically threw a hail-mary from deep in their own territory on their fourth down conversion and then I believe scored on 4th and goal after a missed tackle in the backfield.

That is my recollection as well. I very much remember the missed tackle in the backfield against Baylor. If my memory is correct, and it may not be as it has been 26 years now, Baylor was also a top 25 team when they visited Logan for that game. Not super high in the top 25, but somewhere around 21 or 22. If USU had hung on to win, it would have also been the second win in a row against a visiting school from a "power" conference (this was well before the idea of the BCS/P5 conferences) as USU had defeated Kansas State in Logan a year earlier.

The dropped punt against utah in the final minutes killed us. If he catches it we win that game. I was in the stadium when that happened. That was hard to watch. Where a lot of the guys the year of 92 and 93 recruited by chuck shelton or by charlie weatherbie?

Ooh, I remember the dropped punt by the player whose name shouldn't be mentioned. We had all the momentum in the second half and still ended up scoring but not getting the two-point conversion to tie.

Most were Shelton's players. I remember interviewing Shelton in early 1991 and discussing some of the incoming skill players such as Toney Jenkins and Cotie McMahon, both of whom turned out to be perfect WR's in Zorn's offensive scheme. Calvillo was a Weatherbie guy who in essence started the '92 season as the #3 and within a few games was the starter. Zorn and Weatherbie didn't show much patience with Angelovic. I can't remember who the #2 was...perhaps it was Calvillo after all.

I feel Shelton was given a no win situation at times. 1990 he had to play byu, Utah, Nebraska and Oklahoma. Then the big west and we finished 5-5-1. The 1991 season we were one field goal miss away from going 6-5 and playing in the California bowl. That season we had a lot of talent and probably would have saved Sheltons job. The early 90's we weren't to bad. We lost so many close games.

Is it weird that I have ptsd when someone punts to us. I get nervous every time. Maybe I need to get some help. I have seen us lose so many games on dropped punts its nuts.

What the heck I'll name names as best as I recall since I was there at all the aforementioned games.

First of all it wasn't Toney Jenkins it was Tracy Jenkins
the qb for Baylor was JJ Joe
the guy who fumbled at rice eccles was smoot
the guy who missed the tackle against baylor was Efram Haymore (a good dude)
Ron Lopez was the #2 in QB

I thought ron lopez graduated in 1991. That 1991 had some studs.
Roger grant
Ron lopez, Tracy jenkins,
Rod moore. They did beat fresno who was ranked 25th. That was homecoming and it was tje coldest game ive ever been too. One of the most fun.

It was actually Toney Jenkins; Tracy Jenkins preceded Toney by a few years.
By 1992 Ron Lopez was already gone. It was Angelovic, then a #2, then Calvillo. Calvillo quickly leapfrogged both of them after the Utah game in 1992. Angelovic was a similar QB as Matt Wells. Mobile, very mobile, good arm, but not a "passer".
JJ Joe was the Baylor QB and I remember he tore us up the year earlier in '92.
I remember Efram Haymore, he was a good DB, the missed tackle not withstanding.

1991 was the what if year. Beat 25th ranked fresno and then a missed field goal against long beach state that cost us a winning season. We where ranked in the top 40 to start the year. Roger grant in 1990 was the 2nd leading rusher in the nation. One of the most disappointing years with the talent we had.whatever happened to ron lopez and roger grant?

Lopez had a pretty good career in the Arena League where he was Kurt Warner's backup for awhile. Not sure about Roger Grant.

First of all, I believe Logan High product Greg Watts was on that team. Good dude.

More importantly, the greatest player on that 1991 team was Matt Martinez. When I say "greatest," I mean he accomplished the greatest feat of any player in Utah State history: he went on to marry super-gorgeous, super-sexy supermodel Niki Taylor. Pretty sure it didn't last long, but still . . . .

Thanks for the clarification florida. I'm curious as to why you dont like to discuss the player who fumbled. Could you shed some light? PM if you need to.

My resume would begin with:
Married to Nikki Taylor for two glorious years.

Oh, I just didn't want to throw his name under the bus 26 years later. I'm sure he felt worse about it than any of us fans did. I'm sure he's over it by now (or at least should be). His name rhymes with "Fondel Kmoot" or something like that.

Congratulations on the glorious, if short lived, accomplishment with Nikki Taylor
