Average Height

Post by aggieref » May 29th, 2019, 4:15 pm

The average height for our team next year is 6' 7.75"

Here is how it compares to other in-state teams so far:

Utah 6' 6.64"
Weber 6'6.61"
BYU 6'4.6"

Utah's average is raised with the addition of Matt VanKomen 7'4"

Can anyone remember a taller Aggie team than this one?

I wonder how they compare to the Jazz?

If I did the math right, then the average height of the Utah Jazz is 6' 6.84''... We have bigger guys than the Jazz!

I wouldn't say bigger. I'd say taller.

There are a lot of players on a team. Average height doesn't necessarily mean a lot since some of those players may rarely see the floor. For example, it didn't mean a lot when Carson Shanks was on our team when he pulled the average up.

It would probably be better to look at average height of just the projected starters or players expected to get significant minutes, or if you want to get more precise, average height weighted by minutes played per game (or projected minutes per game).

But yeah, it's nice to have height!

This is at least partially driven by the number of guards/wings on the team.

Anyone know what the average vertical jump is for our team? We know Queta's vertical is 24 inches. Any guesses on team average?

He also played in as many tournament wins as Stew head coached.

This thread and need for a PG made me remember Max Perry...all 5' 8" of him and perhaps the best guard USU ever had.

But Shanks wasn't a part of any tournament win, which is where I'm confused.

You boys better check your stat lines. Carson played for the Ramblers of Loyola Chicago his senior year. They made the Final Four and Carson played.

Ah you are correct. According to the Loyola Chicago website he played a whopping two minutes.

Is that the same one that the zoobs play twice per year?

I spent too much time researching Carson Shanks today. So here’s what I learned. Yes he played 2 minutes in a tournament win against Kansas State while he was a Rambler. Their team site also says played in their loss to Michigan in the final four, but logged 0 minutes.
He also played in a tournament loss to Arizona while playing for North Dakota.
Now he plays professionally in Malta.

Seeing Trevin Dorius and Marco Anthony being added to the roster and a player or two leaving, I updated the calculation. Looks like we got 1/4 inch shorter on average, but are still the longest team in the state including the Jazz.

USU 6' 7.53"
Jazz 6' 6.84''
Utah 6' 6.64"
Weber 6' 6.61"
BYU 6' 4.6"

I guess we'll have to play the Jazz to see who the best team is... but in all seriousness this is one of the reasons I love Coach Smith. He values rebounding and rim protection like no other.

Isn't small ball all the rage nowadays? Should we be excited that we are taller?

LOL. Funny thought. Can you imagine how badly we'd be beaten in a 40 minute game? My guess is that in a best-case scenario it would be by 60+ points at least.

Can you imagine even being able to score with Rudy Gobert roaming the paint with Derrick Favors while Joe Ingles, Donovan Mitchell and Mike Conley patrol the perimeter? All those guys are very good to elite defenders. And on the other end they would practically score at will.
