I'm still worried about our WRs
We have one guy we know can ball (Nathan). Who else fills the void for what we lost from last year's crew? This is the biggest question mark of a position group for me.

I think this is correct. I do think we have some newcomers that are going to be good in time (carter and lampkin).

Beyond Nathan, no one has proven themselves in an Aggie uniform so I think your concerns are valid.

Taylor Compton isnt bad - he just needs more game time experience. Deven Thompkins is a fast dude too. But I think Ajani & Siosi will be big contributors

Re: I'm still worried about our WRs
I think some of the backups from last year will step up, but not enough for there not to be a dropoff in production. I could see Scarver being an exception to that, however. Kinda depends on the new guys coming in, I honestly don’t know what to expect from them.
Even if this unit isn’t as good as last year’s, it won’t be the worst unit on the team IMO because their job will be made easier by virtue of Jordan Love throwing to them. This is why I’m not particularly worried. I worry more about the offensive line

Re: I'm still worried about our WRs
It’s still a concern for me too as we don’t have many proven threats but we’ve brought in some good talent that I think will come up big. Mariner should step right in and be big for us along with the talented freshmen, jv transfers, and red shirts all give us plenty of options. Also, we do have a WR in Scarver that is an all-American kick returner and I expect him to be a much bigger part of our passing game this year. The guy can flat out fly and he’s been in the system and caught touchdowns for us for two years. Thompkins and Compton also got lots of snaps last year. We should see a few guys emerge from fall camp and solidify themselves early in the season.

Re: I'm still worried about our WRs
So does the three deep go as the following? I think Thompkins looked very promising as a true freshman last year.
Mariner
Carter
Heckstall
Nathan
Thompkins
Lampkin
Scarver
Compton
Patrick
Mariner
Carter
Heckstall
Nathan
Thompkins
Lampkin
Scarver
Compton
Patrick

I feel pretty good about that 3 deep. We'll see some guys emerge and look pretty good.

Aren’t there two new Carters? One high school and one jc? They both seemed pretty promising. The jc Carter has size and nasty blocker while the high school Carter seemed to be a natural playmaker.

Re: I'm still worried about our WRs
Good point. However he had like 200 yards last year. We’ve had a few jc guys with those kind of stats and they never have done much. He probably will be in the 3 deep though.AGGIEinIOWA wrote: ↑June 22nd, 2019, 5:03 pmAren’t there two new Carters? One high school and one jc? They both seemed pretty promising. Re: I'm still worried about our WRs
Here's my reasoning behind my hesitation with Carter and Heckstall. Both dudes were brought in very late in the recruiting process after nearly everyone else we had targeted went elsewhere. Neither dude did much at the JuCo level. Both of them only caught 20 total passes in two years of JuCo ball. I've been hesitant about some of the JuCo guys that have come here in the past and sported the same kind of production numbers. Dwayne Lorick, Alex Wheat, Alex Byers just to name a few. There is a lot to prove for those two guys.

Re: I'm still worried about our WRs
AJ Carter was on a high school team that finished near the top 10 in the country and was/is LOADED with FBS talent. AJ didn't put up huge numbers in high school but it wasn't because of a lack of talent.AGGIEinIOWA wrote: ↑June 22nd, 2019, 5:03 pmAren’t there two new Carters? One high school and one jc? Re: I'm still worried about our WRs
I think Compton is supposed to play Slot this year. Scarver is fast but his hands are uhhh well....mehhhh at the receiver position. I think Carter pulls ahead of him. Possibility that my Jordan and Scarver will be each other’s back up on ST though

Re: I'm still worried about our WRs
Scarver obviously had a rough game against Air Force, but other than that one game my only recollections of him as a receiver has been fairly solid. Seems like all of his receiving touchdowns has been him running away from the coverage....and the one he dropped. I think he’ll have a breakout year.

Personally I’m much more worried about the OL than our receivers. I thought Gary did a really good job of bringing in guys to fill voids left by last years unit.

Re: I'm still worried about our WRs
I think our WR's will be solid. To me the biggest question mark will be if our OL can make holes for our running backs. If we can run the ball well we should do fine at WR. I think Nathan will be our leading receiver. I expect Mariner to have the type of year Tarver did last year. Thompkins should fill the void of Vaughns. Terrell should fill the void of Raymond. To me the biggest void is replacing Greene, he was a stud. I think that void can be filled with a combination of Scarver, Heckstall and the newcomers. If the line can give Love time he should find his receivers. I don't think our offense will be as explosive as last year, but will still be solid. I do think our defense will be really solid.

Who is going to replace Green's blocking? That dude blocked better than any receiver I've ever seen.

Re: I'm still worried about our WRs
Mariner is a pretty solid run blocker. But those of you who a counting on a huge contribution from Heckstall better focus your expectations elsewhere. There is nothing indicating that we could hope for anything more than 5 to 10 receptions in 2019.

We’re really putting our hopes on a true freshman whose next best offer was UTEP?

The physicality that Green brought will not be replaced by a freshmen. He was a grown man destroying DBs out there. How many long gains did he spring?

I am not because GA and our new O-Line coach are not. Specifically, they evaluated all the O-line players (and worked them out) and concluded we did not need to go the Juco route to shore up the O-line. That speaks volumes.

Re: I'm still worried about our WRs
This is exactly why. The new staff was initially looking at signing a few JuCo offensive linemen. That is until they worked out and evaluated every one of them and concluded that JuCo guys were NOT necessary. WR's on the other hand.........Smokin Joe wrote: ↑June 23rd, 2019, 11:32 pmAggieUprising50 wrote: ↑June 23rd, 2019, 2:03 pmPersonally I’m much more worried about the OL than our receivers. Re: I'm still worried about our WRs
His next best offer was probably Indiana in my opinion BUT if you are judging him by looking at stats and his offensive production don't. AJ is coming from a high school program that is LOADED with FBS talent that included the #1 RB in the 2020 class nationally, the #4 dual-threat QB in the 2021 class nationally, the #13 ATH in the 2021 class nationally and the #28 RB in the 2020 class nationally. With all that firepower in the backfield I would have to say that's probably a pretty run-heavy offense.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑June 23rd, 2019, 9:41 pmWe’re really putting our hopes on a true freshman whose next best offer was UTEP?

Re: I'm still worried about our WRs
Carter and Lampkin are kids that could have an impact right away out of high school, and Mariner will almost surely be a starter in Game 1. Add in Scarver and Nathan, plus some receiving help from the TE group, and we really aren't in a terrible situation. If we can get guys like Compton, Patrick, and Thompkins to develop a little bit, we should even have some depth.Madmartigan wrote: ↑June 24th, 2019, 8:04 amWhich guys at the WR position that GA has brought in do you like?AggieUprising50 wrote: ↑June 24th, 2019, 7:55 amI’m fully aware about the O-Line situation and their potential. Re: I'm still worried about our WRs
A lot of unknowns. Mariner was also not amazing at Utah. A change of scenery might be just the thing for him and Utah's offense hasn't been prolific in quite some time. That said, 712 yards receiving over three years doesn't impress or give me confidence in him.YoungBloodAggie wrote: ↑June 24th, 2019, 8:49 amCarter and Lampkin are kids that could have an impact right away out of high school, and Mariner will almost surely be a starter in Game 1.
