Sam Merrill, the...PG
Now it all makes sense why we didn't bring anyone else in atPG. I believe Sam Merrill will be the de facto PG next season.

Re: Sam Merrill, the...PG
I've been trying to tell you guys all offseason that there was never any serious plan to add a PG.

Haha! No worries! The staff really is looking to bring in one final walk-on guard though.

Re: Sam Merrill, the...PG
Pretty sure 22 only ever said that the coaches were never considering using a SCHOLARSHIP on a PG this year... Not that there was no chance we'd get one as a walk on??NVAggie wrote:So you are saying we should be questioning you about the staff bringing in a PG.

Re: Sam Merrill, the...PG
Based on the way in the last season went, it seemed pretty clear that Sam and Diogo could certainly play some PG in a pinch. The only question I had was whether the team would be better off with another distributor allowing Sam to conserve his energy and play off the ball. Not second-guessing Coach Smith; just posing the question.

Re: Sam Merrill, the...PG
If the plan is to have him play significant minutes at PG, I wonder if this is at least partially as a way to audition for the NBA. Some have said that Jaycee Carroll would have played in the NBA if he had shown the ability to play PG. I would have thought that this is less of an issue for Sam since he is a couple inches taller than Jaycee so he wouldn't be as much of a "tweener." But I still wonder if he has a better chance of playing in the NBA at PG so Smith wants to give him some minutes there.

I'm not sure if you're being serious? If so, would you clarify what you mean, please?

I think it has something to do with this:
Don't let NVA tug so hard your leg gets dislocated.

Haha! Both of my legs are currently in their sockets. If NVA has a question, I'm good with answering!BearLakeMonster wrote: ↑July 2nd, 2019, 11:37 amI think it has something to do with this:

Re: Sam Merrill, the...PG
I would love to see Sam get significant minutes at the PG spot, especially if we have other players that can fill the 2 spot. IMO Sam’s skills/attributes translate well to the PG position. He is the leader of the team and when he is playing, which is often 40 minutes of each game, it’s quite obvious that he is the “coach on the floor”. He possesses the following skill-sets/attributes:
• high basketball IQ
• excellent ball handling skills
• exceptional communication skills and court vision
• ability to direct traffic
• unselfish/team first mentality
• makes teammates better
• excellent shooter
• ability to score off the dribble
• ability to stroke it from long range
• ability to penetrate and score/dish/get to the free throw line
• great passer
• ability to control the tempo of the game especially while under extreme pressure
• understands when to score and when to help others
• controlled
• patient
• mentally tough
• championship mindset
However, I think he needs to improve his athletic ability (primarily speed and jumping) as much as possible. According to Coach Smith, Sam has been focusing more on his strength training and nutrition so I think we can expect to see some improvement there. I would love to see him dunk during a game, especially in traffic.
. Maybe Mr. Bean can give him a few pointers.
Here are some good highlights from the USU/BSU game that display everything I mentioned above. Porter looked great too. I think we will be fine at the PG spot. When Smith came to Boise for the USU Roadshow in May he mentioned that he felt that Bairstow was versatile enough to play all positions 1 through 4.

I remember an interview with him a few years back where he mentioned specifically trying to regain some of his speed and explosiveness that he had in his high school/pre-mission days that he didn't have for whatever reason anymore. I'd be pretty pumped if he has as significant of a transformation as he did from year 2 to year 3 heading into year 4.

Me too! Sam had an interview with Andy Katz a couple of months ago and he mentioned to Andy that he needed to work on improving his athleticism. He is driven and want's to play in the NBA so I'm looking forward to seeing his transformation in the upcoming season.
