Will there be a tribute to Steve at the home opener?

Post by RockyMountainHigh » August 5th, 2019, 9:12 am

What are USU's plans to honor him?

Not sure on any special plans as far as at the stadium, but my guess is there will be some sort of video tribute at the very least. It is known that the team will be honoring him with a sticker on the back of their helmet.

Did we hear that from someone with the team? I thought I only ever saw that idea presented by people on this board, but I could be wrong.

Either way, I’d be surprised if they didn’t do something on the helmet or uniforms.

They should name the equipment truck after him, too. Someone get in touch with Hartwell and tell him to paint the truck black and call it the “Night Runner”

I think a helmet sticker season long, a video tribute along with a moment of silence, and then the newly painted equipment truck driving out into the stadium would be awesome.

I never got the chance to know, or even meet, Steve. One of my great regrets. Still, I'm thinking of having some kind of banner made, maybe the pic of him with the flag, to bring to the first game. BLM, you interested?

Something should be done. I know we will all miss seeing him walking the sidelines and always seemed to be right there to congratulate a player who made a big play. Steve was a big part of the Aggie experience.

I actually met him when the Aggies played here at Clemson. I chatted with him a lot on the old usu board and was (am) a facebook friend of his.

Just so you know RMH, you're a friend to everyone on this board. You'd be hard pressed to find a classier opponent fan than you. Good luck to you and your Tigers.

Maybe I have a poor memory but didn’t he pass during the season last year and we already did something?

He died a week after the bowl game. He originally had issues on the road at the Hawaii game.

He was just getting out of the hospital the morning of our last home game.. There was talk of him coming up to game and
being honored. Steve and the doctors felt it was best to watch the game from home. It was about two weeks later when
his body let him .down.

I was lucky enough to be able to put my arm around him and chat him up for a few seconds after the UNM game in Logan last year. I was lucky to get hooked up with side-line passes and was able to hang out on the field with many former FB players. It was my first time meeting him in person, but we had loads of communication over the years via internet.

That is beyond nice of you to say. And honestly I needed to hear something like that with what's going on with me lately.

I sure hope to make it out there for a game SOON.

They did do something for him at the basketball game that was night after his funeral. But I see no reason why they WON'T do anything for him at the first football game.

One thing I will try to do to remember him is NOT blame losses on ONE player for ONE thing and instead be defensive of them like he always would be. I could give several examples of times the majority of the fan base would be attacking a player for something, while Steve would be the guy defending the player saying he tries, still does alot for the school, is very important, etc.

A note. From page 7 of the game notes vs. Wake Forest: “USU will honor Wiley prior to its home opener.”

It would be fun if Blue came out for Stony Brook wearing mutton chops. :)
