Basketball verbal...Adam Thoseby...Maine Central Inst?

Post by Seldomseensmith » June 14th, 2011, 8:55 pm

Placed the question mark because I've never heard of this kid, had no idea we were recruiting him. Thoseby is a 6'5" SG from England via Maine Central Institute which is a prep school power in basketball. Hoopniks, a pretty good recruiting site has it on it's twitter page. Maybe someone else knows about this, but I'm wondering if the MCI assistant coach who tweeted it meant Southern Utah.

Looks like it's accurate. Thoseby tweeted that he's a Utah State Aggie.

I think it is correct sss. He was at rat ball Friday night and played with the team. His dad had a pretty thick accent and all I could understand was his first name. He is a shooter and hit quite a few 3's. He looks pretty aggressive, but I think will need to learn to be a better defender. I thought he had to be a Jr college because he just seemed a little older but then I heard his dad say he just attended prep school. I wondered if the coaches were going to offer after the whole Arnold deal. Looks like they must have liked him enough to do so.

Wow .. never heard of him either. That was either a long shot or a very fast signing.

Thanks. I had no idea we were still recruiting for next season. Reading about him, he spent one year at MCI as a post grad. Watching that video, he's very much like Tyler Ott. Same physical appearance/size/build, same position, left handed, same playing style. I wonder if our offer to Ott is still valid.

Is he a recruit for 2011-2012 season? Little unfamiliar with prep school so will he have 4 years to play?

Prep school shouldn't affect his eligibility. I assume he has 5 to play 4.

At least Westminster will have cultural importance to him already... Have we ever seen one of the late signings really flourish in the program? Very much hope to be proved wrong here.

Wasn't Gary Wilkinson a late signing?

Gary may have signed late (not sure), but recruiting him started early - his decision may have been the only thing that happened late. Thoseby seems like he's come out of nowhere.

I am guessing that Thoseby will simply add some depth at the wing. Who knows how much he'll play.

The real question is will Thoseby be at USU after the 2011-2012 season?

I read some of his twitter feed. He's a cool kid and seems to have a pretty good work ethic.

He said something about peanut butter and honey being awesome like he had never had it before. That was pretty much a staple food where I grew up, and I guess I assumed that it was everywhere. Is that not the case?

One of my favorite things in the world is a peanut butter, honey, and chocolate chip sandwich.

Is it just me or does this kid appear to have a real unorthodox shot?

I've been trying to think of a player who's signed late, after the end of the spring signing period, and made an impact here. The only one I can think of is Bernard Rock. I'm pretty sure he was a late signee. After watching video of Thoseby, I'm cautiously optimistic. It looks to me like he's every bit as good as Tyler Ott, who we offered, I believe in December. The two are very similar, and even though it's just video, I don't see much difference. He definitely can shoot it, has good hops, moves pretty well, at 6'5" he's got enough size to play the 3 if needed. If he's coachable, I don't see why this kid can't play here, because he does have talent. Here's an article on Thoseby committing. It states that Thoseby was receiving interest from Colorado State, South Dakota State, Oregon State, Butler, South Dakota, Northern Illinois and Loyola. No other offers listed.

Euros generally don't match sweet and salty things together, consequently PB isn't a staple like it is in the US. The PB in EU also sucks, separates and tastes nasty. Every tme I have a business trip back in the states I pick some. Just brought three big jars back after a weekend trip to Chicago.

It seems to me (with gradually failing memory) that Chaz Spicer came out of the blue late. I think he was announced late in the signing period, but he had very little, if any, buzz about his recruitment. Again, IIRC.

How can any of you be happy about signing a D-2 player?

He may or may not be good.. But Jaycee was a "D-2 player" too.. there wasn't any other D-1 school that wanted him.

I can't say I'm excited, but we just lost a 2nd team JC all American in Arnold, and may lose Reed as well, so I'm just trying to be positive here. I think Brian Green only had interest from D2 and Idaho State, and look what he did. Stew can take a shooter and make something of him if the kid's is willing to work. I'm hoping that's what will happen here.

Here's another update. Looks like we did offer a scholarship and we may have been the first D1 team to do so...

We do know he can shoot and has quickness, put Adam in a winning environment, great coaches, great fans, positive in every way, put all of this together with a good work ethic, great things will happen, that has been proven.
