We could have really used Jamarcus this year. A corner with size would have made the difference in the Wake game.ThunderAggie wrote:Jamarcus Ingram got an interception

I’m really quite bitter about the Ingram thing. He was exactly what we needed in our secondary this season.AGGIEinIOWA wrote: ↑October 12th, 2019, 6:31 pmWe could have really used Jamarcus this year. USU lost a close game this year as well. Coach Wells is gone. Move on.

We’ve also won two of them. How many games that were decided by 8 points or less did Matt win in Logan?

Re: Matt Wells
I remember a couple years ago when we went 3-9, it seemed like we lost every game by 8 points or less. We were on like our 3rd string qb or something, but I remember we had lots of heartbreakers.

That was my last year before I graduated. Didn’t get to go to a bowl game as drum major of the band.ThunderAggie wrote: ↑October 12th, 2019, 7:39 pmI remember a couple years ago when we went 3-9, it seemed like we lost every game by 8 points or less. My graduation seems to have helped the team out a lot!
Will respond whenever you ask what the band is doing

Re: Matt Wells
Your posts come off as dishonest. Tech beat OSU by 10 and were leading by 24 in the 4th.
That was not a close game.
Seriously look up Wells record in games that are decided by 8 points or less.

That’s funny I recall being up on the 23-3 vs San Diego State yet you give Gary credit for winning a close game in that one.

Doesn’t change the facts about Wells. Baylor had 2nd and 18 at their own one yard line with 1 minute left and won.brian5562 wrote:That’s funny I recall being up on the 23-3 vs San Diego State yet you give Gary credit for winning a close game in that one.

7-17 was his record in one possession games at USU. that includes the 12-9 victory over Southern Utah.

Re: Matt Wells
Wells was 44-34 here. 56% win percentage.
In one possession games his win percentage was 29% which is miserable.
Above average coach that struggles desperately in tight games.

This board’s ability to (I can't express myself without swearing) on the coach who brought Utah State the longest period of sustained football success in recent memory never ceases to amaze me.
I don’t really understand why Gary is so loved and Matt is so hated. They both do things that drive me bananas, but both are good (not great) football coaches.

Re: Matt Wells
Incorrect. The year we went 3-9, 2016, we had Kent Myers available all season, but one major blow we did suffer was running back Devante Mays in the second game at USC. We did lose some defensive players to injuries that year though.ThunderAggie wrote: ↑October 12th, 2019, 7:39 pmI remember a couple years ago when we went 3-9, it seemed like we lost every game by 8 points or less. Re: Matt Wells
I do not understand the hate towards Wells. He is an Aggie, he is part of our family. He was a member of the first ever USU team to win a bowl game, back in 1993. He was our starting QB in 1994. As a coach he is responsible for two of the three times an Aggie team won at least ten games, and has another 9 win season to his credit as well. He broke the 36 year winless streak in Provo, and ultimately won three games against BYU, including back to back wins. He had three bowl wins, which is more than all other USU coaches combined. Certainly he did have his faults, but he is an Aggie, both as a player and a coach, and he has had a major role in the most successful period of USU football. So stop the hate.
Oh, and he is the only person to have been a part of every single USU team to have won a bowl game. As a player on the 1993 Las Vegas Bowl team. As the Offensive Coordinator on the 2012 team. As the head coach on the 2013, 2014, and 2018 teams.

I’ve got no problem with Matt. It’s a bye week and the board is slow.
Some, myself included didn’t love how he tampered with some players upon his departure. The way he left was not good, not the fact that he did leave.

Re: Matt Wells
I was not a big fan of Matt Wells but I hope he does very well at TT. It would be good for him and good for everyone if Matt is successful in the Big 12. As for tampering, did we get more players from Utah or did Matt get more players from USU?
Re: Matt Wells
What is Gary and Whitts record in one possession games? Neither are bad at the end when down but I would say Gary, Whitt and Matt do not pass the eye test on how to finish a game when they have a slight lead. They all come from the same coaching tree - makes sense.

[These are my thoughts as well. He was able to continue the success that Gary started. He is also an aggie. He brought a lot joy through many big wins. Also a lot heart break in some of those close games.]

Glad st Gary didn’t plant any seeds in the minds of Utes when he left and has outstanding close game winning skills
I really do like Anderson as a coach and program builder, but the wells hate is overboard and really should go away. Coaches will always have detractors. I bet if your job was managing 100 young people, all in the bright lights of the public, you may have a detractor or 2 more than some in this thread.

I didn't look at Wisconsin and OSU though.
Like you, I would guess that Whitt struggles in one possession games as well, but I don't have the data to validate that.

Re: Matt Wells
I think Matt was a really good coach.
As state above.
Went to Conf championship game. 1st ever.
won multiple bowl games.
Increased and improved recruiting footprint.
Last season was magical and would have not even been thought possible 10 years ago.
Beat BYU 3 times. Twice in their house!
Beat Boise
Become a team to be dealt with in the MWC
Sure he made some mistakes all coaches do.
In the end did what was best for his family just like you do every day.
Get over it.
Oh and by the way I happen to know For sure that he was, is and always will be an Aggie. He and his family love logan and USU and they always will.
The haters have the problem not Matt.
