Recruiting
Recruiting
We have Ashworth coming off a mission and the Montana kid. But we lose Brito, Merrill, probably Queta, Groot, and maybe Porter. I know we are bringing in the kid this weekend that is going on a mission, but can't get too excited about that because even he signs with us, it doesn't mean he will play for us. It appears Nigel John will not be signing with us. So you would think we would be looking at a big for sure and probably a PG. Anybody know about either of these. You would think we would look at one the SLCC PGs.

Re: Recruiting
We are ABSOLUTELY looking at a big man. The coaching staff LOVES the Ashworth kid. I think we have our point guards of the future locked up. IF we land Dallin Hall he will fit in PERFECTLY! I think we'll try and add an athletic scoring wing type guy. I haven't heard of us looking at ANY JuCo dudes. I believe our days of recruiting JuCo guys are over.bpd wrote: ↑October 18th, 2019, 3:34 pmWe has Ashworth coming off a mission and the Montana kid. I tend to agree with you about not recruiting JC’s........except, parrish the thought, if we have injury problems or late transfers.aggies22 wrote: ↑October 18th, 2019, 8:56 pmWe are ABSOLUTELY looking at a big man. I haven't been given permission to say. But I would strongly suggest that you trust this coaching staff when they target someone.

Finally, the air craft carrier is coming!

Re: Recruiting
I'm going to amend my original statement. I should NOT have stated that Nigel is a secondary option. Nigel is still very much in play and would be a valuable get for Utah State. I apologize to you all for my poor choice of words.

Re: Recruiting
We have 3 Seniors.
If you give a scholarship to someone expecting an undergraduate to leave and he doesn't leave, then what?
I think Smith is wise to wait for Spring to sign replacements for Queta and Porter. If you sign someone before you're certain that they're gone, we have to counsel two current scholarship players out the door. That puts added pressure on Queta's and Porter's decisions to stay/go as they would know that their decision to stay would hurt a teammate.
As for Center, we have Kuba, Dorius (not currently on academic scholarship), and Stall returning next year. I wouldn't be surprised if Smith gives Dorius a scholarship. With 15 players, 13 on scholarship, three scholarship players leaving and two signing, that leaves three open scholarships for sure. Two to the new guys and one to Dorius fills the open scholarships. Then deal with Queta and Porter later.

Re: Recruiting
Trevin Dorius has been a very pleasant surprise but I wouldn't count on him getting a scholarship. The coaching staff has their targets in mind.brownjeans wrote: ↑November 11th, 2019, 11:03 pmWe have 3 Seniors.

Re: Recruiting
There is ABSOLUTELY no reason why we shouldn't trust the coaching staff. Our coaching staff:
- led us to a 28-7 record last year (the most wins by a first-year head coach and one of the best seasons in program history)
- led us to our first ever MWC Regular Season Title
- led us to our first ever MWC Tournament Championship
- led us to a No. 8 seed in the NCAA Tournament (the highest in program history)
- led us to a pre-season ranking of #17
- led our team to it's first wins over San Diego State
- recruited the 2nd tallest NCAA Basketball team this year

I am willing to bet that in the event that were to happen, a member of the current coaching staff would remain as the Head Coach.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑November 12th, 2019, 8:13 amYou're right, we should trust this staff. Re: Recruiting
I must admit. Worster seems like a weird signing if Ashworth is planning on signing. Especially if Abel sticks around for his senior year. If Abel Porter is gone and Marco Anthony can play PG I think this could be a cool lineup next season (with two more spots to fill):
G) Anthony, Ashworth, Worster
G) Miller, Bischoff
F) Anderson, Bairstow
F) Bean, McChesney
C) Karwowski, Dorius, Stall

Re: Recruiting
Based on how well they've done, in such a short period of time, it's likely that they will move on to new and higher paying jobs. It's also quite possible that some current players will go elsewhere when the coaching staff leaves. I don't know how we can prevent them or any coaching staff that moves on from leaving recruitment holes. Some potential recruits may be hesitant to sign with USU because they don't think Smith will be here when they arrive to school, whereas if they knew Smith was going to be here they would sign right away. Unless we can do what Wichita State did with Greg Marshall we will likely always have this problem. Like they say: "Enjoy the ride!"Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑November 12th, 2019, 8:13 amYou're right, we should trust this staff. Re: Recruiting
Anthony is a shooting guard. I think you'll see Bairstow play more at point guard as he progresses. Also, the coaching staff is excited about Ashworth. I believe a scorer at the 3 is on the list as well as a pair of bigs.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑November 12th, 2019, 8:26 amI must admit. It has been reported that he will be graduating and is likely to move on. Coach Smith mentioned this in a post game interview a couple of weeks ago too. It isn't final but highly likely at this point.Mr. Sneelock wrote: ↑November 12th, 2019, 12:00 pmDid I miss something? Why would Abel Porter not stick around?

I know, but I'm not sure I trust a true freshman RM in Ashworth to run the point. I've also heard coach Smith say that Anthony can easily play positions 1-4.aggies22 wrote: ↑November 12th, 2019, 11:06 amAnthony is a shooting guard. Smith said Porter’s plan is to leave after this year to play professionally overseas after the 2019-2020 season. Unless Smith can convince Porter to stay for his final year.
