Re: Confirmed: Aircraft Carrier Commits to USU
You can see what Smith is hoping for when Bean rebounds the ball and pushes the ball up the court. This created many plays for himself and others over the weekend. Before next season if Bean can improve his ball handling and his outside shot and Bairstow is ready for a bigger role then the team will be good whether or not they add a true pg.

Re: Confirmed: Aircraft Carrier Commits to USU
*Shrug*
Maybe that's a blind-spot in Smith's approach, or maybe he wants his team to beat a press and not one player. I don't know.
What I'm saying is that it seems to be clear, after two recruiting seasons of not targeting a PG, that Smith doesn't put much value on a traditional PG and fans that need a PG might have to choose to adjust their expectations or start campaigning for a new coach. I recommend the former.
One thing is certain, reading posts for years (I hope Smith is here for years) about how we need a PG is going to get really old for me, so I'm trying to nip it in the bud. Let's be honest, this is about me.

Re: Confirmed: Aircraft Carrier Commits to USU
Everyone knows that combo guard with great ball handling abilities (read traditional PG skills) is just a spicy #2. That is what's apparently being sought out here.
We want a Bean Brito, a spicy #2, and a side of Worster sauce.

Re: Confirmed: Aircraft Carrier Commits to USU
Steven Ashworth and Rollie Worster are VERY underrated players. Ashworth was able to more than hold his own against very tough national competition and really turned some heads his senior season but he had already inked his LOI. I think Rollie is getting a bad rap here because the last Montana dude (Bradshaw) we took flopped at basically every level he played at. Rollie Worster is NOT the Bradshaw kid. Nobody here digs this kid because nobody has heard of him. Nobody here had heard of Neemias Queta either. My point being when the coaching staff has the opportunity to scout a kid out and really get into who he is, they have done rather well in the recruiting area.

I think everyone needs to come to the realization that position-specific traditional basketball that many of us grew up playing no longer exists.brownjeans wrote: ↑November 26th, 2019, 9:54 am*Shrug*

Re: Confirmed: Aircraft Carrier Commits to USU
I remember beating UNM in the tournament. I also remember Matisse Thybulle, arguably the best defender in the country last year, destroying us. If we switched Porter for John Stockton in his prime we still wouldn't have won that game.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑November 26th, 2019, 7:41 amDid you watch the New Mexico game in the MWC tournament last year? Or the Washington game in the NCAA tournament last year?flying_scotsman2.0 wrote: ↑November 26th, 2019, 7:33 amHonestly, I don't feel like we've been hurt by our current pg situation. Our ball movement is fantastic and has really helped us to score points. Porter is also a pretty good three point shooter, that's much more valuable in this offense than a "typical" pg.brownjeans wrote: ↑November 26th, 2019, 6:51 amPG-obsessed fans need to understand, Smith isn't interested in 5'10" fast players who dribble 15 seconds every shot clock. He wants four 6'5" to 6'8" guys on the floor who can all handle, pass, and shoot. He wants the ball moving. He wants everyone sharing. He wants everyone to be a threat to drive, pass, or shoot.
If you must have a traditional PG to be happy, you may want a different coach.
Also, Abel is shooting 27% from the 3 point line so far this year.
My point isn't really that we couldn't possibly be better. But you gotta let this staff do its thing. I don't care if they ever recruit a pg again as long as they keep winning.

Re: Confirmed: Aircraft Carrier Commits to USU
Ok ignore the semantics of "PG"....
Here is an alternative description:
Quick defender (one that can stay with P5 athletic guards)
Solid handles (capable of dribbling without turning the ball over when intense 1-on-1 pressure is applied by elite defenders)
Capable of breaking down defenses with dribble penetration (can beat most defenders to the hole and finish or dish)
Capable of hitting an open shot at a reasonable clip to keep defenses honest when the ball is not in his hands
Can we make do without a player as described, of course. Is our primary goal to be competitive in the MW or make a run in the Dance? Do we need at least one player like the one I described to become elite? Maybe, maybe not but I would like to have one considering we have 13 scholarships.

If Marco Anthony is an elite perimeter defender, I'm excited to have him.
Pooh Williams' 1-on-1 defense was a great luxury (e.g. Jimmer - shot 36% in the two games Pooh guarded him).

Thank you. EXACTLY. That's all anybody is saying. You all are getting caught up on calling it a PG. Call it whatever you want. We need a player with certain skills that are "usually" attributed" to a PG.Pacobag wrote: ↑November 26th, 2019, 12:10 pmOk ignore the semantics of "PG"....

No. Not unless you want to get yelled at. Just call it a player with quickness, good dribbles, speed, good passer, penetrator, good with the ball, and good decision making ability.

Re: Confirmed: Aircraft Carrier Commits to USU
It's not just semantics, it's a concept.
The team does THE job, not a player doing HIS job. Take special forces teams as an example. Special forces train so that every man can step in and do the job of each team member if one of them goes down. They strive to be cross-functional, interchangeable. Sure some guys are best at certain things, but others can do the job. This makes them harder to defeat.

Re: Confirmed: Aircraft Carrier Commits to USU
I have a fun story about Pooh Williams.
My family and extended family on my dad's side are all Aggies. It's a long tradition. In fact, a cousin (a couple of generations up) was AD when the Spectrum was built. As part of family tradition, we almost always went to the tournaments. I remember the Big West games in Anaheim being one of my favorite trips of the year. This continued when we joined the WAC.
Fast forward to 2009, WAC tournament in Reno. My cousin and I drove up Thursday night (missing the first game) to meet our parents and our grandma/grandpa at our hotel. The lot of them had arrived the previous day and had actually made it to the first game. Thursday morning, prior to the game, our parents/grandparents had gone to a breakfast buffet and ran into the basketball team. My grandpa loved to chat with people, so he heads on over and started talking to them all. He did this everywhere: grocery stores, breakfast buffets, even foreign countries.
Unfortunately, about a decade previous, my grandpa had been in an industrial accident. He had a couple of plates and 16 screws in his face, one eye was glued shut, and he was really hard to understand when he spoke. And there he was, yammering away to the men's basketball team about the tournament, and basketball, and everything else. Gary Wilkinson was a senior, and G-Money (as my cousin and I referred to him) didn't understand a single word. In fact, apparently nobody did. Except for Pooh. So, Pooh translated everything my grandpa was saying for the team.

It's a strong point of personal preference. Don't use traditional, binary, gender specific pronouns, and don't use traditional skill set-specific position descriptions when speaking or writing. It's just common sense, man.
