Re: Oregon OC is rumored to be the next UNLV coach
I won't believe someone can be successful there until someone is successful there. The conversation about how impressive 8 win seasons has come up on this board. UNLV has technically only had two 8 win seasons in their entire history since a 3rd was vacated. One of those was in 1979. So in the last 4 decades they have had one 8 win season. Since their last 8 win season in the year 2000, they have not only had 18/19 losing seasons, they have had seven 2 win seasons. They are the definition of a bad football program. I've occasionally heard people say if the right guy takes the job they could be something special. I believe that about Colorado State. I don't know if anyone can win at unlv. I'll believe it when I see it. When something has never been done before, you got to see it to believe it.

Re: Oregon OC is rumored to be the next UNLV coach
There were plenty of people saying that about USU until about a decade ago. UNLV is getting a new stadium and I have to believe with their locale that they can have a great team. I'm not sure they currently have an AD that can put the right people in place to get them there though.Aggie formerly in Hawaii wrote: ↑December 9th, 2019, 5:39 pmI won't believe someone can be successful there until someone is successful there. UNLV wanted to hire Morgan Scalley (Utah’s DC) by Utah just made him the head coach in waiting so he isn’t going anywhere.

I wonder if having the Raiders there will help, hurt, or make no difference.

Like I said in my post, I've heard people say what you are saying now. I'll believe it when I see it. Here are the records of UNLV's coaches since they became D1a:ProvoAggie wrote: ↑December 9th, 2019, 6:26 pmThere were plenty of people saying that about USU until about a decade ago. Harvey Hyde 1982–1985 8–37–1 .185
Wayne Nunnely 1986–1989 19–25–0 .432
Jim Strong 1990–1993 17–27–0 .386
Jeff Horton 1994–1998 13–44–0 .228
John Robinson 1999–2004 28–42–0 .400
Mike Sanford 2005–2009 16–43–0 .271
Bobby Hauck 2010–2014 15–49–0 .234
Tony Sanchez 2015–2019 22–40–0 .336
There are bad programs and then there are dead programs. UNLV is a dead football program. They are not a mediocre football program or a sleeping giant program. They are as bad as it gets. Morgan Scalley is smart to not go there. Mike Sanford probably regrets going there. I imagine he could have followed Urban to Florida and been his OC there which would have greatly increased his stock for a big time job.

Re: Oregon OC is rumored to be the next UNLV coach
There is one guy that used to regularly post on the old old old site that would always go off about how we don't have the resources we need to have a successful football program. Then he complained about us taking the Maverik Stadium deal which we did for THAT EXACT REASON.ProvoAggie wrote: ↑December 9th, 2019, 6:26 pmThere were plenty of people saying that about USU until about a decade ago. Now that players can get paid UNLV is gonna be good.
NCAA gonna really regret letting players get sponsorships when UNLV's 5* recruit and future first round draft pick is sponsored by the "Spearmint Rhino" (SPENCE!) they're going to start dominating. Casinos will pay big money to get people in.

While this is true, I would think that NFL players will be more than happy to take all their $$$

Why doesn't UNLV hire another high school head coach? What about Favero? He was pretty good at Logan.

Why not take a second swing with the Bishop Gorman Coach? I think it's Sanchez's brother.flying_scotsman2.0 wrote: ↑December 10th, 2019, 10:48 amWhy doesn't UNLV hire another high school head coach? What about Favero? He was pretty good at Logan.

Re: Oregon OC is rumored to be the next UNLV coach
I've never seen an NFL contract, but if I were an NFL team I'd put it in the contract that they cant. Whereas if the NCAA implementation is similar to the CA law, there is nothing that the NCAA or school could do to stop them.JFW_AGGIES wrote: ↑December 10th, 2019, 6:53 amWhile this is true, I would think that NFL players will be more than happy to take all their $$$

I'm pretty sure NFL players are free to license their likeness in any manner they want. I know Rat would know the answer for certain.Imakeitrain wrote: ↑December 10th, 2019, 11:22 amI've never seen an NFL contract, but if I were an NFL team I'd put it in the contract that they cant. Their home stadium is about to become kick-(I can't express myself without swearing).
Their $31 million state of the art practice/training facility is barely christened.
I think UNLV could be perennially good with the right guy now that their facilities are beyond legit.

If Aranda to UNLV happens I will be utterly flabbergasted. This makes absolutely no sense to me.

Why would Aranda leave LSU where he makes more than 80% of the D1 coaches with a perpetually rolling contract. For UNLV. Please say no Dave.

It would make absolutely no sense. He has such an awesome job right now without the head coach responsibilities and making more than most head coaches sounds like a great spot to be in.

Re: Oregon OC is rumored to be the next UNLV coach
Honestly, I think UNLV is a sleeping giant. With the new NFL team/stadium coming to Vegas and the ability to pay players for their likeness coming, I can see UNLV blowing up if you they get the right coach in there.
It wouldn't surprise me if the realignment that SDSU & UNLV position themselves to be picked up by the Pac 12.

I get how the paying players thing will be beneficial for the big programs with strong fanbases. Local companies would be more interested in getting those players to do their commercials, etc. Does anyone really see UNLV players being in demand, though?

....and the Rebels officially go with Marcus Arroyo from Oregon. Sounds like he is bringing Heyward, the Co-DC from Oregon, with him. Seems like a decent hire?

IF and that's a BIG if, the NCAA goes through with allowing collegiate players to make money off their likeness, there is plenty of money that could be used to lure much better athletes than what they are currently recruiting and signing.BigBlueDart wrote: ↑December 11th, 2019, 9:17 amI get how the paying players thing will be beneficial for the big programs with strong fanbases. Arroyo, who spent the previous three seasons as Oregon’s offensive coordinator, agreed to a five-year deal worth $7.7 million. The deal begins at $1.5 million next year and rises to $1.6 million by the end of the term, as of now tying him with the third-richest football contract in the Mountain West.
