Some of those numbers are so inflated it's not even funny.
Sold tickets and not scanned.

I'm looking at you SJSU, New Mexico, UNLV, Colorado State and Hawaii.

I think there were 1000 people actually at the USU New Mexico game to close the year.

I didn’t have time to do all of them, but a Fresno filled up 77.5% of their stadium and only 5% of their population attended games.

We filled up 76.9% of our games and 38% of Logan’s population attended games.

Is cut to throw out numbers like that, but given the size of Logan there is pretty darn good support. Room for growth of course, but I think we do okay.

We kinda got screwed with 3 November games and the Colorado State and Nevada games had bad luck with the weather in October.

Beyond sad when UNLV, a team with a stadium 20 miles away from the University, that sucks, beats you in attendance. Look for them the be Boise level when their new stadium is built and they get a good HC that can turn that program around. :x

While I agree 100% I still feel like saying "excuses excuses" - for us to be near the bottom, near SJSU level, is pathetic. Especially getting beat out by UNLV!!!

Inflated or not, I think it is sold tickets that help pay the bills.

we need to quit using this metric as we all know a lot of USU's fans that a attend games come from SLC and the other side of the mountains.

Getting "beat" by a few hundred seats (UNLV) is a statistical tie.

I think the points that dyedblue makes concerning the percentage of the stadium filled and the percentage of the relevant population the attendance represents show we are doing fairly well. I understand that many fans come from out of the valley, but at the end of the day a lot of those universities have larger population centers to draw from - and almost none of them have two dominate programs (in terms of fan bases) in their immediate footprint.

With the exception of Boise we are also winning or holding our own against the teams on that list.

Problem is that many of the Universities buy those tickets and try to give them away.
So they aren't really sold at all.

No one likes to admit it (we'll have a million excuses in each one of these types of threads), and I said it in another thread, but unfortunately USU doesn't have a following. Utah has sold out the past 60+ games, and byu averaged 52,475 last season which is it's lowest since they expanded the stadium in 1982.... Not sure how they fix it but it isn't my job to either.

Boy, ain't that the truth 2004AG ....November night games in Logan... turn on the T V baby. What could the MWC possibly be thinking to schedule so many game in November in Logan Utah? The drive back to Sandy after midnight can be a test, even for me.

Nobody would claim we don’t need more fans. We do. But I was just pointing out a little bad luck we had this season. Anecdotally I know quite a few people who were planning on coming to Nevada and CSU but didn’t at the last minute due to crappy weather.

I have no answers, but seeing Bovee and Smurthwaite whine about it on Twitter pisses me off.

I don’t have the answers, but we have to expand our reach on the wasatch front in addition to whatever it is they do in the valley.

I think the AD needs to understand there are people that actually look at the attendance numbers and think UNLV is a bigger draw than USU.

That Wyoming game deserved much better attendance. Sure, it was in November, but the weather was great that day and that was an afternoon game. BYU and Boise St not being sell outs was disappointing, but not even the student turnout for the Wyoming game was very good.

Seems relevant to me. I mean, how far from Logan do you have to go before you have a circle that contains a population of 2 million people? How far for Fresno, UNLV, San Diego. I mean, some comparisons just aren't the same - I learned that from Sesame Street.

Guys there are 190,000 people within 35-40 minutes of the stadium That is the cache metro plus Box Elder.
I do not think the attendance was terrible, but of course it is not great, and night games later in the year are tough, but then Boise play's almost all their games at night.

The one we should be able to keep up with is Wyoming.

People weren’t showing up because the team wasn’t showing up to the big games that everybody cared about. Aside from I guess you could claim Wyoming, we got whooped. It’s not like we looked like we gave a good effort and just lost, we didn’t show up. Had we beat (or at least competed against) BYU, the attendance vs WYO and Boise would’ve been better. Guarantee it. And you can’t even begin to entertain that the CSU and Nevada attendance weren’t affected by weather. There must’ve been a couple thousand people who dipped out.

They also allow beer sales of at their stadium perhaps that was why their attendance has improved, beer and funnel cakes my Lord they have it all covered.

I was on the sideline and in a suite at the UNM game a couple of weeks ago. They announced 11,600, but there were actually no more than 600 there. We could have taken five minutes and counted everyone when we were up in the suites looking down on the stadium.

If they are being accurately quoted on Twitter, then Smurthwaite and especially Bovee have no case to yelp about home game attendance when the solution(s) are so available for people generating responses for these problems. It would also be lovely if the scheduling dullards at the MWC realized that night November games in Logan are historically and predictably COLD and HOSTILE!!!!!!!!!

There's no way around it, Navy. In general, the MWC schedule has the inter-division games in the early part of the schedule and the intra-division games at the end, so that there's no chance of a championship game that's a rematch of the week or two before (like happened between Cincy and Memphis in the American this year, and IIRC Boise and Fresno a few years ago, which IIUC resulted in the current policy.)

So there are going to be two home games in Logan (and Fort Collins, Boise, Laramie, Colorado Springs, and Albuquerque) in November every year for as long as we're all in the MWC, the divisions stay the same, and the scheduling practice of intra-division games last exists. The AD needs to acknowledge it and market around it, the fans need to accept it and plan accordingly, and the community needs to make a virtue out of necessity -- maybe have a fun warming tent with hot chocolate and TV screens.

TV will continue to dictate start times, but I'm hearing rumors that the conference is pushing back against so many late starts (would that be worth, say, a reduction in rights fees? Someone should be able to figure that out.)

I don't buy it. We've got funnel cake at Maverik AND World's Best Corndogs. We should be beating people off with sticks at the gates.

I had one of those corndogs. They're overrated. The best corndog I've ever had are the Lions Pups at a Smithfield BlueSocks game. Although, it could be argued that the Lions Pups aren't corndogs at all, because I don't think they use cornmeal. I think they're some other kind of batter. They're insanely good though and have the "world's best" beat by a large margin.

I have the perfect idea to increase our attendance.....have the local Bishops announce that each game you attend counts as your Home Teaching/Visiting Teaching/Ministering for the month. If Cache Valley hears that they can attend a game in lieu of visiting those on your Ministering List we'll be a standing room only for each game. Do the same for basketball.

Room for growth of course, but I think we do okay.
we need to quit using this metric as we all know a lot of USU's fans that a attend games come from SLC and the other side of the mountains.
Seems relevant to me. I mean, how far from Logan do you have to go before you have a circle that contains a population of 2 million people? How far for Fresno, UNLV, San Diego. I mean, some comparisons just aren't the same - I learned that from Sesame Street.
Seems like the lesson here is that people living in Cache Valley need to start having more babies.

I made many of those throughout the years when my parents were very active in the Lions club.

It is just pancake batter over a hot dog.

See: http://www.statsamerica.org/radius/big.aspx for a tool to do this (approximately - it counts the counties at least partially in that circle).

A 75 mile radius around Logan contains about nine hundred thousand people. While a 75 mile radius around either Slat Lake City or Provo contains 2.6 million people.

75 miles around Las Vegas contains 2.3 million, 75 miles around San Diego contains about 9 million people.

That's why it's so important to make progress on the wasatch front. You expand that radius by 25 extra miles and it jumps to 2.2 million.

Does it also account for other D1 programs? We have three on the wasatch front as well as two more that play D1 basketball. There are probably not very many markets in the west with that kind of saturation.
