Old Bowl Memories
Got to thinking about Aggies and bowl games...I remember our appearance in the Sun Bowl which may have been the first time USU appeared on national TV? (Anyway I remember it as really cool that our obscure team got national exposure). My other memory is of the Gotham Bowl played in NYC in ? Giant Stadium (at least it was a baseball field) and Ronnie Bull ran all over the Aggies. Rumor was our team enjoyed a bit too much of NYC nightlife the eve before. And it snowed.
But perhaps the weirdest bowl game ever involved the Utes; I remember them playing in Atlantic City (I think) indoors in a building converted into a football field which was only 80 yards long!
Go Aggies!

Re: Old Bowl Memories
This is wild. The 1964 Liberty Bowl, which was played at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, it was the first indoor football game broadcast on TV. They brought in sod and laid it on top of burlap to make the playing surface.

WOW that's wild. Also, look at how many people showed up to watch these Utah teams play each other. LOLZ

Re: Old Bowl Memories
My favorite memory: LV Bowl II in 1993. My best friend, me, and our wives flew down and rented a car. Checked into our hotel just off the Strip, stripped the beds of blankets, and made our way out to the stadium (our flight really cut it short). There was a brisk, cold wind and the bleacher seats were aluminum. Even wrapped in the hotel blankets we were freezing.
The Ags weren't cold, though, and utterly blasted Ball State in the first half, then coasted the rest of the way.
This was the "Aggie Caravan" game, where some 10K drove down I-15 to Vegas. It was, by all reports, quite a sight.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Re: Old Bowl Memories
To put USU bowl games in perspective, I looked up the first appearance by the Aggies...the 1947 Raisin Bowl in Fresno. We were Utah State Agricultural College, often referred to as "The Farmers". Played San Jose State....did not have much offensive punch (126 total yards and just 7 first downs.).
It appears we had a great punter!
Statistics San Jose State Utah State
First Downs 16 7
Rushing Yards 177 75
Passing Yards 110 49
Total Yards 287 126
Fumbles-Lost 1-1 3-1
Penalties-Yards 5-65 2-10
Punts-Average 5-39.0 6-44.0

Re: Old Bowl Memories
From some very, very reliable reports, the night before team partying for many of the players was no rumor. A bad call by our coaching staff for a game we should have won going away.tinplater wrote: ↑December 20th, 2019, 6:37 amGot to thinking about Aggies and bowl games...I remember our appearance in the Sun Bowl which may have been the first time USU appeared on national TV? Wrapping yourself in Las Vegas hotel blankets? Haven't you seen Dateline?

Re: Old Bowl Memories
I was at the imfamous 70 points allowed orange bowl around 2012 or so where west virginia ran all over my tigers. That's the last bowl I have been to.
