I hope someone who has experience leading an offense. I hope it is not a first time coordinator. We saw how that went with Ena. Be interesting to see how it turns out.

Re: Whos the next OC
It scares me a little bit. We've basically only ever seen Gary hire from the good ol' boys network for the most part. That leaves some scary names for me:
Aaron Roderick, Fesi Sitake, Kevin McGiven, Dave Schramm, Dave Baldwin.
Any of those guys and I will be sorely disappointed.
Sanford Jr. was also the QB coach, so this really leaves our offensive staff gutted without an offensive mind or QB developer on staff because Gary is a defense guy. I've seen Sanford up close working with the QB's. He definitely knew what he was doing in that area.
I think Chuckie Keeton as a QB coach may be a real possibility.

I agree. Gary at this point is going to hire someone in his comfort zone. I don't see him wanting to hire a guy that he doesn't already know.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑January 3rd, 2020, 9:34 amIt scares me a little bit. My guess is it will be a current assistant from BYU, Utah, Weber State or Kevin McGiven.

My choice for the next OC is already on staff. He was in the booth all season and saw first hand how bad Sanford was.

No way on favero. He ran a good high school program but i would not put him incontrol of a college offense. We need someone who has been a coordinator at the college level or at least a position coach who is also a good recruiter.

Whos the next OC
I’m guessing Jason Phillips. He was our passing game coordinator this season but has prior experience as an OC at SMU and Houston. Maybe promote Philips to OC (and keep wr’s) and then bring Chuckie back to be QB coach?

Re: Whos the next OC
Please NO Dave Schramm. Weber State fans last year were begging for us to hire him away and I'm sure are this year as well. The only reason I don't go around thinking we would have been that much better off this year(and I'm talking just this year, short term) hiring Jay Hill instead of Gary is the likelyhood that he would have brought him along. I would be arguing louder we should have gone after Hill him after there was some way of knowing that he was NOT bringing Schramm.

Re: Whos the next OC
My vote is Paul Peterson, Dixie State Head Coach.
He played QB at Snow, Boston College, and in the CFL.
He was a great OC at Sacramento State for 5 years. He was Snow's head coach for two years and is the current head coach at Dixie State. He's highly regarded and has Dixie State on the upswing.

Re: Whos the next OC
As for Utah assistants, it was enough of a disaster to hire an assistant from their defensive side, the side they are notoriously great at. Hiring from their offense, the side they are notoriously poor at, would be even worse.

He seems like a solid one I wonder if he would want to be a coordinator at an FBS level or continue to be I had coach at a lower level.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑January 3rd, 2020, 10:24 amMy vote is Paul Peterson, Dixie State Head Coach.

Re: Whos the next OC
My serious answer is that I want someone with OC experience over a spread offense. Preferably, FBS but if they showed a high level of success at the FCS level, I would be happy with it.
I don't care if they have connections with Utah, if they are a "rental", or anything of the sort. Our program isn't one that can expect to keep successful guys for 2+ years. Give us lots of success for a year, go to a big program. Make us attractive to more up and coming guys.

Mark Helfrich? (was just let go by the Bears)
Perhaps a stretch but he reportedly was interested in the HC job here before it was handed to GA. I really can't see Gary surrounding himself with anyone outside of his trusted inner-circle though.

Re: Whos the next OC
Tbh I think Paul Peterson could be a good fit.
Eastern Washington had the number 1 offense in FCS this year (ypg of 525). Not sure what their OC is like but could be worth a look.
I doubt Gary would bring back McGiven just because he wouldn’t hear the end of it but I’m also curious why everyone is so down on McGiven. San Jose had a great offense this season, particularly through the air. I mean his offense put up more points against Boise than any team has in a while (42). He did a super job with Josh Love the last two years as well. Wasn’t he also like national QB coach of the year in 2014 when he was at USU? I know Oregon State was a disaster but he didn’t have much to work with there. I think his first year there he was the only qb coach in the nation that had no one in the program with any game experience. They improved some the next year when he was promoted to OC ... then the wheels fell of the next year when Gary stepped down. I’m not sure what Kevin and Gary’s relationship is like. Gary roasted some of his assistants on his way out but not sure if Kevin was one of them or not. I wouldn’t be upset if McGiven came back but I don’t think it will happen.

I would 100% be excited with any OC from Eastern Washington. They've taken down P5 schools. That offense is dynamite IMO.AGGIEinIOWA wrote: ↑January 3rd, 2020, 11:30 amTbh I think Paul Peterson could be a good fit.

On January 16, 2017, Baldwin was hired as the offensive coordinator for California of the Pac-12 Conference under new head coach Justin Wilcox. In Baldwin's second season at Cal, the Bears’ offensive efficiency ranked as the second worst among all Power Five teams. Under Baldwin, the Cal offense was shutout for the first time in 20 years in its Pac-12 conference game against Utah on October 26, 2019.

I really hope it is someone with prior OC experience. Gary is a defensive guy and if he brings in a position coach where this is his first Coordinator position that could spell disaster. If the head coach was an offensive guy then I don't have a problem bringing in a position coach because then the head coach can coach him along.

Re: Whos the next OC
According to the USA Today database, we Sanford's salary was $330,000...that is good money for a G5 coordinator. Its tied (with Ena) for 5th highest assistant coach salary in the MWC. We should be able to get someone experienced with that salary range.
Also, Dave Baldwin is currently available (read unemployed)...just saying.

The Paul Peterson idea really intrigues me, well done Roy. I also like Chuckie Keeton. He was the QB when we had one of the most dynamic offenses in Utah State history and he is incredibly smart when it comes to having an offensive mind and he loves Logan.
Jason Phillips was also the Co-offensive coordinator at Houston with Kliff Kingsbury 8 or 9 years ago.

Complaining about hiring a coordinator with experience that GA knows because of the good old boys network while thinking hiring a high school coach you know is a great hire is hilarious.

I'm surprised you are creating a straw man argument, GeoAg. Name one single poster who was complaining about GA hiring from the good ol' boy network while thinking he should hire "a high school coach".
You found it "hilarious", but it never even happened.
