Greatest shots...

Post by bluegrouse » March 14th, 2020, 3:44 pm

To me, Sam’s shot was the greatest Aggie basketball shot of my lifetime. I’m 54. I can’t speak to anything before my time. I’m curious to hear what you guys consider to be the biggest/most memorable shots you’ve witnessed as an Aggie fan.

Here are a few of mine:

1 - Tony Brown’s shot in the lane over a gigantic shot-blocker for Ohio State in overtime in the first round of the NCAA tournament to seal the win. Still the only tournament win in my life. This is one I’d put in the same category but not quite as high as Sam’s.

2 - Multiple Jaycee Carroll’s shots late in crunch time to put us in a position to win games.

3 - Chaz Spicer’s 3-pointer to beat Utah in Logan

4 - Greg Grant’s steal of inbounds pass and lay-in at the buzzer to beat BYU

5 - Tyler Newbold’s baseline jumper that rolled around the rim and in to beat NMSU and put us in the championship game of WAC tournament

6 - Going way back, Blair Reed hitting a long shot from well above the top of the key (before 3-point line) that bounced off the back of the iron straight in the air and fell through to beat Weber State at home

7 - Chris McMullin’s turnaround heave from the time line to beat Utah in the Huntsman Center

8 - Tai Wesley’s putback to beat Utah in Logan when the clock didn’t start and Jim Boylen’s temper tantrum

8 - Of course, Wayne Estes’ last shot that gave him 48 points that night and 2001 for his career. (I wasn’t born yet so I didn’t see that one!)

Just after Wayne Estes tragically died, LeRoy Walker made the greatest shot I've ever seen, and I doubt it's anywhere on tape. Aggies took a shot that bounced high off the rim toward the foul line. LeRoy jumped up to rebound the ball and at the peak of his jump he one handed the ball back into the hoop. He could really jump and that shot was for me THE shot of all AGGIE shots that I ever first person witnessed.

Some other ones that come to mind, though none as great as The Shot:

Spencer Nelson's game winner vs. BYU in 2003

Brian Green's huge shots at Hawaii in 2011

Brady's dunk at St. Mary's in 2011

Spencer Butterfield's game-tying 3 vs. SDSU in 2013

Abel Porter's game winner at New Mexico last year

Sam's eventual game winner against LSU this year

Bean's game-winning follow-up against USF this year

Sam's huge 3 late in the CSU game this year (eerily similar to The Shot)

Hal Hale put one up from over 20 feet out at the buzzer to beat the Utes in Logan in 1967. The best show that night though was a fight between Utah's Jeff Ochel (Okel) and our own Pete Ennega. Pete certainly got the best of it. Ochel's face was way swollen after the game. We won the game AND the fight. Fun night in the old fieldhouse.

Memorable shot but not in the class of "The Shot" by Sam. I just like beating Utah.

Nate Harris' 3/4 court one handed baseball throw in Reno. Pretty sure it was part of the conference tourney.

Butler's rebound dunk off a Huber missed three against Santa Barbara or Irvine in the Spectrum.

Troy Rolle dunk over Hordeman.

Bernard Rock banked in a three to beat North Carolina in a Hawaii preseason tourney one year.

Preston Medlin's flurry of points against BYU when he was a freshman and had his redshirt yanked.

Medlin's buzzer beater to send our home game against Idaho to OT.

Stavon Williams 8 straight points against Nevada in Logan.

Good list. Just to clarify though, it was USC we beat in Maui not North Carolina. Amazing shot though. Bernard Rock should get more talk when the conversation of all time great Aggies comes up. 56-12 as a starter, 35-3 in conference (including the two tournament titles) and of course being part of the last team to win in the dance.

It was indeed in the conference tourney against La Tech. Nice list!

Ah, that’s right USC. Thanks!

I consider Rock easily one of the best PGs we’ve ever had.

The shot I remember goes way, way, way back. I'm guessing 1953 because I was in the 5th grade at Whittier School and our student teacher was married to Bob Harbertson (? spelling) who played for the Aggies. I saw him make an end of game basket from mid court. This was close toor during the era of Pat Dunn, Hal Theus, and Max Perry (the magician) and for me glory days of USU basketball with coach Cecil Baker.

I seem to remember a game-winning putback by Matt Formisano.

Yeah. I think that was OOC against UC Santa Barbara down there early in the season.

EDIT: found it

When I was in college, Reid Newey hit a 3-point shot from in front of our bench late in the game to tie the UNLV Rebels when they were in their heyday. Not sure where they were ranked that game but probably top 5. That shot blew the roof off the Spectrum. We went on to lose a close game but I’ve always remembered that shot.

Just because of the excitement it meant to all involved, Groot's monster slam should get a small part in the movie. Great moment, great teammate, and True Aggie.

Kendall Youngblood's fastbreak dunk off an Alan Gordon behind-the-back pass against #1 ranked UNLV in 1990. Brought the house down.

Thanks for posting. If anyone has more access to any big shots or any great Aggie moments, feel free to post them. We are not going to see a potential tourney run this year, so we might as well enjoy great moments from the past.

The Spencer Nelson 2003 against BYU shot mentioned above holds a special place in my heart. It was my first game as a student and it’s what got me hooked on Aggie basketball. I’d love to see a clip of that if anyone has one!
