Coaching Candidates
Re: Coaching Candidates
Sitting here watching the Ohio state vs Indiana game I can’t help but wonder..... what about Kane Womack? Indiana’s defense is legit. I know he is super young at only 34 but he has screamed up the coaching ladder everywhere he has been. Before you get concerned that he is super young with limited coaching contacts, his dad Dave Womack was a very good college coach for 37 years.

Lol I literally just commented on that! Nice bro!GeorgiaAggie wrote: ↑November 21st, 2020, 11:02 amI want Indiana’s DC Kane Wommack, he currently makes $460,000 up and coming, great energy, and a heck of a coach. Checks all the boxes. The important ones anyway.

I’ve actually watched a few of their games and he jumps out on their staff. Impressive coach, win or lose this game.

Maybe 2nd half D? That’s a massive improvement to where we are. Ohio Staye could put up 150 on us. I like this IU D.stwinward wrote: ↑November 21st, 2020, 11:55 amMaybe 2nd half D? Their defense has actually played well, several turnovers and sacks created. The IU offense has had some bad turnovers.Imakeitrain wrote: ↑November 21st, 2020, 12:27 pmThat’s a massive improvement to where we are. Ohio Staye could put up 150 on us. I wouldn’t hang my hat on a pay cut being a deterrent for a coordinator becoming a head coach.stang wrote: ↑November 20th, 2020, 6:40 pmI would love, love, LOVE if we could land Alex Grinch, though I imagine he would be taking a pay cut. I know that we're still in initial stages and haven't had hard confirmation on some of the names being tossed around. MY OWN OPINION.... I would love it if we were looking/speaking to young up and coming guys like Brian Johnson, Alex Grinch, Andy Avalos, Tommy Rees, Joe Brady ....
I wouldn't hold my breath on Joe Brady. He's the OC of the Carolina Panthers, and is very likely in line to become an NFL HC in the next few years.

Best Coordinator Available (for us)-I think we've discussed FCS Coaches. As to Coordinators, is Avalos from Oregon our best bet or is it someone else?

Who would you say has those qualifications? I can’t think of a single coach unless you are implying Maile. Witch he only fits half the bill. Bleeds Aggie blue but has zero qualifications.

Re: Coaching Candidates
I’ve been pretty candid about this, but we need to take somebody who’s a head coach right now. That doesn’t leave us with a lot of options but it does give us some good options with Hill, Choate, and possibly some of those MAC or Sun Belt guys we discussed (If we’re able to get them). I think this is the most practical way to go right now.

Re: Coaching Candidates
Watching the Cyclones. They're beating K State dirtbags right now. Campbell is a really good coach. I remember when we played him when he was coach for Toledo. His coaching staff back then was the youngest in D1 football. They were great though. That game was really close until Kerwynn went nuts.
Anyway, I would be happy to consider someone from his coaching tree.
Jason Candle was his OC in Toledo and is not the Toledo HC. Candles on the last year of his contract and we could probably pay him a little better (but he may just use it as a way to negotiate for a higher salary on an extension).
Lou Ayeni was Campbell's associate HC. He is assistant coach, RB and Recruiting Coordinator at Northwestern now (his alma mater) - he might want to stay there but becoming a D1 HC might be enough to draw him away.

Re: Coaching Candidates
Another potential coach to consider is Scott Frost at Nebraska. He hasn't done great this year and he could be available. Here's why he could be a good fit with us:
- Has had success at a G5 School
- Has plenty of experience recruiting in Florida and Texas
- Could have several players at Nebraska transfer to play for him here to fill in the holes.

Re: Coaching Candidates
This will be my last statement on Jeff Choate, since I know you’re all getting sick of me hyping him up. I found the clip of the final play of the 2018 Montana-Montana State game I attended. In this game the bobcats were trailing 22-0 in the game and came back to win 29-25 by forcing a Montana fumble on the goal line on the final play of the game. This fumble wouldn’t have happened if it weren’t for Choate. On the prior play, Montana scored what appeared to be the game winning touchdown, only to realize that Choate came sprinting down the field to call a timeout. This helped them load the box and force the game winning fumble to win their 3rd straight (now 4th) win over the Griz. I’m including the video of the entire game in case any of you have 2 hours of downtime, so you can watch how Choate coached these guys to victory over Montana 2 years ago.
Re: Coaching Candidates
Keep in mind one thing Hartwell is looking for is a CEO type head coach. Disclaimer I know nothing but some one from Bill Belicheck, Pete Caroll, Nick Saban, Dabo Swimney could be in play....

Re: Coaching Candidates
Exactly what we need. I would like to see someone that has been a head coach. Anytime you’re picking a coordinator it’s 50-50 at best that they will make an excellent head coach because they’ve never done it and you don’t know what you’ll get. The skill set it takes to be an outstanding head coach is rare, they need to be an excellent manager as well as coach and know when and how to push and pull all the right buttons at exactly the right time. I like Hill the best from what I’ve seen, though I’m sure there are many others that could do a great job.Madmartigan wrote: ↑November 22nd, 2020, 9:52 amWe need a detail-oriented guy as head coach. This is probably the thing I find most interesting about Choate. Chris Petersen is probably my favorite college football coach and many coaches in his tree have been successful and play a similar style as Coach Petersen.
