So who do you hope it is?
Re: So who do you hope it is?
While Maile is winning the pole, it appears at this point that 75% of the fan base doesn't want him.

Re: So who do you hope it is?
Are ranked choice polls available? This would be a good example of how they work.

This my friend is exactly what I’ve been saying all along. Welcome to the fan club!NavyBlue wrote: ↑December 3rd, 2020, 8:29 pmI watched a rebroadcast of the Montana-Montana State game from last year. Choate it the real deal. Taking a program with much less resources and recent tradition than the Griz and totally sticking it to them, and beating them 4 years in a row. He is an excellent coach.

Re: So who do you hope it is?
I appreciate the fight. Obviously this game is frustrating (like most AF games are), but you can notice a significant difference in effort than when we saw the first three games.
With that being said, I do hope we bring in an outside candidate and start fresh. I mean, when was the last time we’ve had a real “open” search for the head coach candidate since the first Gary hire? Since then we’ve promoted an assistance, brought back Gary again, and now this. Let’s turn a new page.

Re: So who do you hope it is?
With that punt, I want to change my vote from Maile.. You can't punt the ball at 4th and inches with 2 minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter while down three scores. Trust your players. Play to win, not to prevent it from being a blow-out.
EDIT: I still like Maile and have seen major improvements in team chemistry and motivation under his helm, but I don't think he has what it takes to be the head coach. Other options can still bring the same motivation and drive to the team but also have other characteristics and experience necessary to be a head coach.

Then he has to fire himself cause this is his defense and it’s been awful all season. Shouldn’t get the job for that alone.splintorb wrote:I don’t think/know if Maile is the guy...unless he fires all his coordinators and starts over, besides our special teams coach.

Re: So who do you hope it is?
If Hartwell hires Maile we are screwed. I don't think Maile is the coach to bring us back. I wanted to see how he prepared the defense for AF. Well I lost all trust in him being able to game plan for a team. The way we covered the pitch from a defensive coach is just plain embarrassing.

Hartwell is not hiring Maile. I’ll bet my house on that. Who he’s hiring?
No idea, but 100% not Frank.

Help me understand why many of you are so vehemently opposed to Jay Hill? I understand he isn’t the sexy, big name candidate. But he would give our program the highest floor IMO.

I don’t think very many people are opposed. Just the person in charge of making the actual hiring decision is.Aggiesbleedblue wrote: ↑December 3rd, 2020, 10:28 pmHelp me understand why many of you are so vehemently opposed to Jay Hill? Re: So who do you hope it is?
It absolutely is just the win against New Mexico. It certainly wasn't the 19 point loss to Fresno or the trainwreck we are seeing tonight. I'm not disparaging anybody. I just don't want to see us make the wrong hire again.ShowMeAggie wrote: ↑December 3rd, 2020, 5:21 pmI'm sure you could surmise this, but it's not just about the W against the Lobos. it's the general "feel" of what's going on within the program. It's the fact that FM has been more assertive than many of us would have expected him to be when he was put in this position. It's that the TEAM has seemed to have more fire in their belly the last two games and been more competitive even though we're down 4-6 of our best players (on paper). Look, most of us know that FM wouldn't likely have led us to victory against BSU or SDSU...we just didn't/don't have the horses. But the fact that we've got more enthusiasm, more smiles, more love for the game since GA (and JS??) left says something about the man and what he might be capable of. I'm still not firmly in the FM camp (I voted for Jay Hill above, fwiw), but there's no need to (underhandedly) disparage those of us that feel like Frank has done things to warm us up to the idea of having him stick around as HC...Aggie formerly in Hawaii wrote: ↑December 3rd, 2020, 5:06 pmIt really is. Definitely a fun game and glad we got the win, but crazy how this board has jumped on maile over one win against a winless bottomfeeder team.SwaggieAggie wrote: ↑December 3rd, 2020, 5:00 pmIt's crazy how quickly emotions have changed after the UNM game.Sl7vk wrote: ↑December 3rd, 2020, 11:51 amCurious to see a before and after the AFA game.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑December 3rd, 2020, 11:50 amI must admit, the results of this poll are very surprising to me.
edit: looks like AiI beat me to it and (while he was at it) said it better than I did. same sentiment, though...FM deserves a look...but not just because of one game...

Re: So who do you hope it is?
We aren't really much better in the 3 games with Maile than we were in the 3 games with Gary. New Mexico is just a bad football team. And I don't buy he is this great players coach when our best running back left the team before the end of the season along with some other good players.AndroidAggie wrote: ↑December 3rd, 2020, 6:48 pmi haven't seen many people say "oh my gosh we MUST hire frank maile!"
i see a lot of people saying "wow i thought he was gonna suck and i can see a difference in the way we're playing and i'm encouraged. i'd be interested to see how he'd do as a coach."

I was all on board with Maile.....maybe it was a bit of New Mexico game talking but I now think we need an overhaul. Butch Jones would be my pick for that. Jay Hill would be a solid pick but Hartwell will look past that hire.

Re: So who do you hope it is?
I would take Butch Jones or Jay Hill. Jay Hill is an up and comer who resurrected a dormant Weber team and made them a national player in FCS. Butch Jones is a retread, but the guy won at Central Michigan, won at Cincy and did fine at Tennessee until his last season. He is been an assistant at Alabama since his Tennessee stint. He is younger than Gary and I believe would still have a lot to prove. Both have good resumes.MaverickAggie wrote: ↑December 3rd, 2020, 10:47 pmI was all on board with Maile.....maybe it was a bit of New Mexico game talking but I now think we need an overhaul. Yeah that isn't happening. Tonight was bad on the field, but that is the silver lining. We now know 100% we are going in a fresh direction and we all should welcome that. I'm excited to see who Hartwell brings in.

He wouldn't be my first choice, but just because a guy got fired at a P5 job doesn't mean they will fail at their next G5 job.ineptimusprime wrote: ↑December 3rd, 2020, 10:54 pmJay Hill, yes. Re: So who do you hope it is?
Yeah I get when you are a bad team, wins can be more fun because they are less frequent, but at the end of the day it was one home win against a winless New Mexico team. We aren't any better under Maile than we were under Andersen.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑December 3rd, 2020, 11:14 pmI’m surprised that any of you are surprised by what you saw tonight.
